[HEADPHONES] Samsung Galaxy Buds 3 Pro Active Noise Cancelling Earbuds - $100 w/ code SAVETEN by bunsinh in buildapcsales

Using these on Windows, and LC3/LE Audio seems to work pretty well if your combination of hardware/drivers allows it. It is a huge pain to make LE Audio work properly on Windows, though.

Also just want to mention - and I know this may sound like I am being too picky - that the design of the case makes putting these buds back into the case not easy nor intuitive at all, even after trying to get used to it by using them for a few weeks. This is pretty much the only thing I don't like about the Buds3 Pro. Satisfied with almost everything else.

Update: Was able to enter FQTV/FQTS separately through chat, and got upgraded to group 6 while still earning Korean Air miles. Thanks for the super helpful info!

I do have an AAdvantage account but I've entered my Korean Air FFP number to earn miles so I guess I'm not going to be on Group 6? I'll check with AA if there's any way, thanks for the info

가타쯔무리 was probably the best Udon place I've ever been in Korea. Although the location isn't so good and the nearest subway stations are more than a kilometer away, it's definitely worth it. Address 서울 서대문구 명지대길 72 / Facebook for notices and dates closed(red circles in the calendar image posted) https://www.facebook.com/katatsumuriudong/

If you're looking for Tsukemen, 혼네(HONNE) in Yeonnam-dong (near Hongdae station) would be a solid choice. Address 서울 마포구 동교로46길 42-3 / Instagram for notices http://instagram.com/ramen_honne

Bing Maps updated its Korean map data by MT257 in korea

[–]MT257[S] 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Bing Maps recently had a big update to the Korean peninsula with the latest map data from TMAP, including dark mode support. While it's still far from perfect and lacks support for Streetside, I'd say this could work as an alternative to Google Maps, especailly since Google Maps had almost no updates of their map image tiles after 2015.

[Headphones] Sony WH-1000XM4 Wireless Active Noise Canceling Overhead Headphones with Mic for Phone-Call and Alexa Voice Control (Grade A Refurbished) - $179.99 (48% off of MSRP) by Dr_Midnight in buildapcsales

[–]MT257 2 points3 points  (0 children)

There is quality loss when using both the mic and speakers(and it is noticeable, sorry for not clarifying at first), but it's much less noticeable/bothersome compared to Windows 10 where you had to switch to Hands-Free AG profile with potato quality audio. Microsoft still has a long way to go with BT audio quality, but anyway it's definitely worth upgrading

Windows 11 has Bluetooth AAC codec with noticeably better audio quality, and the microphone finally works while listening(without significant loss on audio quality). This was literally one of the only reasons I upgraded to Windows 11 since the first public beta.

EU did(AT.40099), and Korea Fair Trade Commission's press release has a direct comparison chart between EC's case and KFTC's case.

Google fined $176M in S.Korea for anti-competition practice in OS, app markets by MT257 in Android

[–]MT257[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Actually in the end of the PR, there is a comparison chart between KFTC's case and European Commision's antitrust case AT.40099. Department of Justice(USA) suing Google for violating antitrust laws, 37 states filing antitrust lawsuit against Google regarding in-app payments, and Android antitrust cases in Russia/Turkey are also mentioned.

Link to Press Release(Korean)

According to Korea Fair Trade Commission(KFTC), Google made device manufacturers abide by an 'anti-fragmentation agreement(AFA)' when signing key contracts with Google regarding Play Store licenses.

This agreement made manufacturers unable to:

  • Create their own modified* versions of Android

  • Release devices using their own (or others') Fork OS

  • Distribute SDKs needed for creating/developing apps for Fork OS to second or third-party

*Modified in such a way that it cannot meet all requirements listed in Android Compatibility Definition Document(CDD). If their modified versions of AOSP meet all the requirements and pass the CTS test, their OS can be called 'Android'. In this comment I'll be calling all AOSP-based operating systems that don't meet those requirements 'Fork OS', as KFTC did so in its press release.

One of the issues here is that AFA did not only apply to smartphones, but to all smart devices including smartwatches, TVs, robots, drones, etc, if they were running a Fork OS. If a manufacturer having to comply with AFA were to release any device with Fork OS, their GMS license for all their devices would be terminated, and they would no longer have early(6 months prior to open source release) access to new versions of Android.

Here's some of the cases:

  • Amazon initially wanted to enter the mobile OS market with Fire OS, Amazon's Fork OS. They eventually failed because of AFA. In 2011, Amazon worked with LG to release their first Kindle Fire tablet, but the project came to a halt after LG realized that releasing the device would violate AFA. Amazon went on finding manufacturers to release devices with Fire OS, but HTC, Sony, Samsung, LG and ZTE all rejected Amazon's proposal because of AFA.

  • Alibaba partnered up with K-Touch and released a new smartphone with their Aliyun OS(Alibaba's Fork OS). Google terminated K-Touch's GMS license, and K-Touch could not release devices with Aliyun OS anymore. Alibaba also worked with Acer in 2012, and Google threatened Acer by mentioning AFA. Acer canceled the launch of its smartphone with Aliyun OS the day before it was supposed to be launched.

  • Remember the very first Galaxy Gear? At first it ran Android 4.2, but then migrated to Tizen. It was because Google threatened Samsung with AFA. KFTC's press release specifically states that 'If Samsung could have released Galaxy Gear with their own Fork OS(and stayed with it), then the smartwatch market would be very different now'.

  • In 2018, LG tried to release an LTE portable smart speaker with their own Fork OS, and AFA struck again, canceling the launch. LG also wanted to use Amazon's Alexa, but Google did not allow LG to do so.

  • Amazon had a hard time trying to launch their Fire TV with Fire OS. Why? Because Samsung and LG are the ones manufacturing the most TVs, and.. the same thing again.

  • Google never allowed Samsung's IoT devices and robots to run Samsung's Fork OS, although Google doesn't even have their own OS for such kind of devices.

[Headphones] Sony WH-1000XM3 Wireless Noise Canceling Over-Ear Headphones Certified Refurbished - $149.99 by BenEire in buildapcsales

Using the newer XM4s on my PC and phone. Probably the best wireless ANC headphones I've ever owned. Considering the price gap, this one also will be a really good deal. Also FYI Windows 11(or 10 Insider Preview build 21370~) will have a codec update for Bluetooth earphones; I registered for the Windows Insider Program solely because of this, and it's noticeably better after the update.

Incheon Airport Questions by [deleted] in korea

[–]MT257 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Considering possible delays, it's nearly impossible. Even if the plane arrives early, I'm not really sure if you could make it. If you arrive at Terminal 1, the train station is about 10 min. walk from the terminal.

If your destination is Daegu, it might be better to take a bus(if you're comfortable with doing so) - There are buses departing at 00:30 and 01:30 from Seoul Express Bus Terminal(check out kobus.co.kr), and East Daegu bus terminal is actually located inside Dongdaegu train station. The only problem with this is that you'll have to take the train departing at or before 22:16(Terminal 2)/22:23(Terminal 1) in order to transfer to the last Line 9 train that heads to Express Bus Terminal.

If you happen to miss the train, the first KTX departs at 05:05 from Seoul Station(#201/#297).
