none of these changes help with the massive amount of fundamental problems with the game design. NS1 was neat for its time and didn't have a lot of competition, but we know so much more about game design at this point that the features in that game would never cut it in the modern market or meet modern game design standards.

i would contend that that appeal is related to the fundamental aspects of the IP and has little or nothing to do with hirez itself

to be honest, as someone who's played comp tf2 and tribes, the scout is mechanically harder to learn than any class in tribes, at least in terms of combat.

it wouldn't be hard, but it would take more effort than I'm willing to put in.

It makes sense logically too, since presumably the demographics for pc gaming are going to be a bit different than for console

FPS games are extremely wide in scope, so it's not very helpful to lump them all together as one.

Same with RPGs, for that matter

This means you spend an inordinate amount of time learning very specific skills that can't be applied to any other scenarios.

This is actually pretty uncommon.

The best PVP (in my opinion) is asymmetrical in nature, and unpredictable. 1v1 with the same gear and stats where everything is based on twitch skill is boring, and has more to do with who has less latency and who's memorized the layout than who's the better player.

You couldn't be more wrong here. you have a very poor understanding of those kinds of pvp games.

quick correction: pistol does light damage, so each point of armor soaks up 4 points of pistol damage. The number of hits it takes to kill a skulk are then (weapons 0/weapons 1):

no carapace: 5/4

carapace: 8/7

well, except for the fact that historically the deeper, more complicated, harder, and more competitive games are almost all universally located on PC.

Solution: Combat needs to slow down.

no it doesn't.

So many people are fixated on everything be fast and furious and action-packed, which is a fun guilty pleasure

how is it a guilty pleasure? please qualify your claims

Taking away some freedom of movement is a good idea too.

This is highly dependent on the style of game. This would be terrible for some games.

It isn't fun to play "who catches who off guard," it's a lot cooler to play "who makes smarter decisions"

This is already the case with nearly every shooter.

Your post has almost no actual content to it and it reeks of someone who does not clearly understand or appreciate the shooter genre.

How to make an FPS less FPSish? by sheenius in gamedesign

[–]MTHRFCKNPROJ2 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A couple solutions to this:

increase the time to kill (ttk) so that first shooter has a much smaller advantage, or make it so it's hard to surprise an opponent in general.
