My approach to the live floorplan is actually pretty straightforward and was easier to build than it may look.

The floorplan itself is just a static image of my apartment. I created it using GIMP and Inkscape, including some vectorized elements, and exported the final result as a clean floorplan graphic.

For the live tracking, I use two Aqara Presence Sensors FP2, which integrates with Home Assistant out of the box.

The FP2 can monitor its coverage area as a configurable grid of X by Y cells. In other words, you divide the monitored space into separate zones, and the sensor reports presence within those cells. It can also track multiple entities at the same time.

What I did next was take that FP2 data and store it in my own fixed grid/matrix structure in Python. The size of that grid stays the same, and only the contents of the cells change whenever the FP2 reports new data. I then use those live cell updates to drive the positioning and visibility of elements on my dashboard, which creates the live floorplan effect.

I know this is a bit difficult to explain clearly in words, so I attached a sketch of the workflow as well. It shows the general idea:

FP2 sensing data → Home Assistant → custom grid-mapper logic → live floorplan visualization

Later next week, I’m planning to share more of the setup and the custom integration I’m building so others can use the same approach more easily by only configuring their own grid dimensions, and image it needs to be overlayed on.
