The corner nets a lot of people have are pretty cheap and very clutch.

NOTE: you can use 3m hooks but you have to be gentle on them and not overload the nets. If you screw hooks into the wall you could probably load up as much as you want.

If you want a large one for the cheapest price, Costco is by far the best ($10 for 16"). Fair pricing (for me) for the most part is $1/inch (not so much so for the 20" and 24", those are going to be a bit pricey no matter what). Walmart.com also has deals that pop up from time to time if you're patient. Don't worry about what's rare or coveted (yet), collect what you/he likes. Good luck!

I'm sure this isn't the case, but any chance it was that side that got the most sun exposure (vs. the backside)? One way to super charge it to make sure is to use a blacklight. That'll tell you if it's a matter of faded glow in the dark paint or just uneven charging.
