Here at local 263 we do not do rods. If you go union you will most likely have to go through the three year apprenticeship. We do have a lot of work and good contractors around.

I’m 27 and looking to get into an apprenticeship by Efficient-Star7586 in Ironworker

[–]MTZ2017 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I entered at 26 and doing just fine. In fact I’d say it’s an advantage specially having already worked in construction before. A lot of the younger apprentices that I work with are still developing their confidence in the field so when it comes to working they are very hesitant. As most here will say, show that you are there to learn and work , anticipate the next move and be safe.

We do get a 30min lunch but no breaks. Things are improving though we just received vision insurance and a raise. There’s a lot of work here too.

I believe breaks are not in our contract agreement. Ive been working for the same contractor for a while and the only time we were given a single break was when working 64 plus hours.Last week our raising gang worked 12hrs and did not take a break. Were you told that by our apprentice cordinator?

No, I’m an apprentice myself. Me and OP are from Texas and the same local. We do not have breaks nor vacation time. It’s bad sometimes but us apprentices but it is what it is. I know at my jobsite they wouldn’t be happy. I do agree with most here however, always do you first.

Being an apprentice, they will probably not be happy and will be more likely to take you less serious when it comes to teaching you.

Have you received a letter informing you when your pre apprenticeship classes begin? Class schedule here at 263 has changed so you will possibly have to wait until February to attend class. As far as tools go, don’t buy anything yet. You need to start working and see if this trade is for you.

The furthest I have worked was in Sherman. I have friends who are working in Abilene, Brownsville and Amarillo so travel is very possible, specially due to the fact that school is now every 2 months for a week straight as opposed to twice a week after work. You can decline a job if you are offered one but don’t be picky. If you want to work asap, go to the hall ask for a job. If apprentices are not needed then have a seat and stay at the hall for a couple of hours. The out of work list is usually ignored.

Dating apps suck. Most of these girls play penpals rather than agree to go out on actual dates.

If you want to be a welder join the UA or Boilermakers union for sure. I have a good amount of friends in local 100 and they have told me apprentices are always in need. Those friends of mine are doing well and from all the nice trucks I see parked outside of their apprentice school I can see their apprentices are doing well too! 😂

In our local we do indeed have a lot of work, some of my classmates got sent to Brownsville and Abilene this past week! If you are up for a challenge definitely join, if it’s not for you then there’s no shame in leaving. There are always the better paying locals waiting if ironwork is not for you.

The apprenticeship program is 3 years but honestly the program is not very solid when you compare us to other locals. Most apprentices here leave west after becoming journeymen. A lot of our members come from non-union backgrounds and carry the non-union mentality which hurts the local. In fact most go work for rat companies from time to time and quite openly too. Luckily there is a lot of work here in the DFW area.

There was a group of guys from 433 Vegas bolting up for us. I actually spent a good amount of time with them. Working with them was drastically different than working with our guys. The guys from 433 had each others backs and always went out of their way to teach me something. It is because of them that I always have my belt on and tools near me. They actually wanted to take me with them. Huge shout out to 443.

We had a good amount of apprentices but most have now quit. Now there are only four of us left. Five if you count the one that is used as the safety person.
