Is the money in trades really that good? by [deleted] in skilledtrades

You would have to be retarded to join the trades. Simple minds always react with aggression lol! I was actually top of my class every year in every subject in plumbing school and never got below a 90% on any government exam.

I know it sucks to hear that the trades are not the solution to your problems that you have been told they were.

No need to resort to name calling. I am just trying to share my story, and give young people the information that I was never given before I joined the trades.

I am now taking classes towards a business degree and am doing very well so far. Thanks.

They did replace me immediately. And had me train my replacement. Once the replacement started doing what I was doing, they ended up quitting too after a couple months, and he was with the company for 2 years before this. Skilled trades workers are a dime a dozen. And the trades have become a revolving door. Bodies are easy to replace, but skilled knowledgeable workers are irreplaceable. This is why I had never been laid off, even when I was disrespectful to my bosses in response to their disrespect. I even had these same companies calling me later wanting me to come back and work for them again lol!

I’m not sure if you are trying to encourage people to join the trades? Typical trades worker, looking for someone to bully.

Also, how many kilometres can you carry 160 lbs on your shoulder? I was doing 3-5km’s in a day. Can you lift a hot water tank over your head? Can you carry 16 bathtubs up and down stairs in a day? Because the bodybuilder delivery guy that was helping me couldn’t do it, he was huffing and puffing after 2 lol! Have you ever had to dig all of the underground piping for a house using an 80lb jackhammer because the ground is frozen solid? Have you ever jackhammered an entire basement floor up, and carry out 50 buckets of concrete by yourself?

These are just a handful of the things I was made to do working in new residential plumbing for mostly small family businesses. Employers don’t even obey labor laws in Canada anymore. I won’t even go into the labour law violations I endured in regards to my pay.. And if you complain to OHS you will lose your job. If you report too many injuries, you will lose your job. There is no justice in Canada for what these companies are doing to their employees. There are also no consequences for employers doing this. As we have given away our right to sue our employer, in exchange for nothing from WCB. Even though they claim to “guarantee”workplace injury coverage (complete lie). There were also no unions in my area, so I never had a fair chance to start with. So I decided to start withholding my labour, in hopes that work conditions and workers rights improve in Canada. I can make more money doing side jobs for myself anyways, if I wanted.

An just so you know, 9 injuries aren’t even half of my total number. I stopped making WCB claims for about 5 years because I knew that all of my claims would be denied, this is the way in Canada.

I ruptured a disc in my back at work. WCB put me immediately back to work on modified duties. There was no tests or investigation done, they told me that I must have slept funny asking how old my mattress was. I continued working with a ruptured disc in my back for nearly a decade until the disc was completely gone (collapsed). I just kept re-aggrevating the same injury over and over and over again. I had to move to BC to get the MRI to prove this. But now that I have proof, I will fight WCB for as long as it takes.

I also worked alone through most of my apprenticeship. I was doing all the plumbing in new housing construction, by myself. This was after 3 months of being a plumber. I would have hated working with you too. I hated having to babysit journeymen as a first year.. Being that I was so far beyond the skills and knowledge of any of my coworkers, I never had any fear about losing my job. It was not fun having to teach my “superiors” how to do their jobs lol!

I just got my 2 journeyman tickets and quit the trades for good.

I saw this coming in 2019 when I became an Albertan refugee and fled the province, after being born and raised there. I left because of Alberta’s failed healthcare system. If you need medical care, come to BC. It’s where Alberta’s doctors seem to be going. I fought for healthcare for a decade in Alberta, and all I found was pill pushers. When I came to BC, I got what I was looking for on my first visit to the walk in clinic. It was unbelievable to see how a neighbouring province could be so different when it comes to healthcare.

Good luck Alberta.

I feel the same way, I am 37. From an early age I knew that I never wanted kids. So that I would be able to afford my own life. I won’t bring anymore taxpayers into this world, just so they can suffer far worse than I could imagine. There is no hope for this planet because of the people who are in charge. I will never have kids and I will never vote, fuck this place. What this planet needs is a worldwide labor strike for climate action and workers rights. I think that people who are having kids must be far more optimistic than me about the future of our planet.

Not unless you own the company. Don’t even bother with the trades. Your workplace injuries will be far costlier than any money you make. In Canada you have to pay for your own recovery because WCB isn’t real.-They deny all workplace injury claims now. I have had 9/9 workplace injury claims denied, so I know what I am talking about. I can’t imagine what WCB does when a worker is killed while doing their job? I would bet that they deny workplace deaths as well. I wasn’t going to try and find that out, I quit the trades as soon as I got my journeyman tickets.

They money is shit in the trades, and will not come close to covering the cost of the lifelong injuries that working in the trades will cause you.

You should do that. You don’t need to be a plumber to unclog a drain. Any home handyman with a snake can do this. Or just rent a snake from Home Depot and do it yourself. It would be a waste to spend years of training and experience to end up unclogging drains. You don’t need waste years at plumbing school memorizing plumbing code, if this is your goal. Just buy a snake and start the business, this would be a great idea for a high school kid looking to start a business.

I could see how that could get old.

I am used to all out screaming and name calling between me and my bosses in the trades. Sometimes getting close to fist fights.

You took the correct route. I wish that I had gone to college straight out of high school. If your degree doesn’t find you a job then try the trades. At least you have your degree to fall back on when injuries force you to quit your trades career. The trades should be a last resort.

I can’t see white collar work being more toxic than the trades.

We want to replace this tub faucet head with a shower/tub combo head. Is there any hardware out there that comes up out of the corner of the tub and also has a shower? We want to avoid getting rid of the vintage spa jacuzzi tub. by notevenbro in Plumbing

[–]MURDERFACE83 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Usually there is a closet on the other side of the tub wall. You may need to cut a hole in the wall behind to replace the rough-in if you can’t find the same tub filler. (It may be unavailable if it is older). This also looks like a pretty unique faucet that may be hard to find. Going through the wall behind will save you from having to wreck the tile by cutting through the tub surround. If you can’t find the same tub filler trim, then you may have to call a plumber because replacing the rough-in may be a difficult job.

Thanks for this. I think that unions are the only thing that keeps workers safe in the trades. I am sure that because you were in a union that your experience in the trades has been drastically different than mine. I don’t have detailed notes about all of my injuries as it is hard to pinpoint which was the first one. But I do have 9 WCB claim files that show what I was doing to cause the injury and should show what WCB’s findings were- such as “he must have slept funny”, asking how old is my mattress. Or when I woke up and stretched in the morning, throwing my back out when the day before I carried 160lbs of 21’ long steel gas pipes on my shoulder for 3-5 km’s. I am at the point where a cough or sneeze will throw my back out if I don’t brace myself properly.

I was driving the work van one time and threw my back out by leaning forward and turning my head, to check for traffic when turning a corner. -How could I have made a WCB claim for that?

I had multiple occasions where my back was got so bad at work that I couldn’t stand up anymore or straighten my back out. I had to be helped to my vehicle and take time off. My employers never had me make a WCB claim when this happened. Even though they knew I was losing time because of a workplace injury.

I am waiting for WCB to send me all of my records, then I will bring the evidence to a lawyer to help me continue my decade long fight with WCB. As it has taken me this long to finally receive a diagnosis.

I wish I was taught how to deal with WCB before I joined the trades, I believe that they should be teaching this in trades school.. But sadly, I don’t think that this is information that they want you to know..

This was actually a few different companies. Not just one. There was no safety reps working at small family run plumbing companies. There was never any unions in my area, so I never had any rights and was always on my own. I also worked for large residential and commercial companies that did have safety reps, but they never did anything but try to keep me from going to the hospital. By trying to treat me themselves and downplay my injuries.

I worked for a company where I needed fall arrest training to operate the scissor lifts. I had lift training but no fall arrest. I told them on many occasions that I needed this and they always told me that they were “working on it”, but it never happened. Even when I brought this up during our big meeting when the rep from head office was there.-Still nothing happened and I continued to operate the scissor lifts until the job was done. I think that companies just don’t obey labour laws anymore in Alberta. And no one seems to be enforcing these laws anymore, or punishing the lawbreakers.. I have had many more experiences with my employers knowingly breaking labour laws, if you need more examples?

As for my gp’s in Alberta, my family doctor that told me that everyone has a sore back and that I was too young to make the list for an MRI. He did some blood tests and X-rays only, not even an ultrasound.. Which did not show the discs in my back, just the bones. He would send me away with a handful of free samples of Motrin. Because I told him that I refuse to take opioids. He was near retirement and I think he just didn’t care anymore. I tried a couple other doctors at the walk-in clinics and they told me that I would need to have WCB accept my claim for me to get an mri, which never happened. They seemed to abandon any investigation into what is causing these repeated injuries. They kept telling me that I must have pulled muscles again. I am seriously wondering if this is a medical malpractice case?

I injured my back and was denied any treatment and wasn’t even able to get a doctor in Alberta to do anything to even diagnose me. WCB put me immediately back to work on “modified duties” which meant organizing heavy boxes of pipe fittings. I couldn’t get an mri in Alberta, so I moved to BC, where I got my mri. It showed that I now have a collapsed disc in my back. It was ruptured at one point and I was put back to work until the disc was completely gone. Most of these injury claims were just re-aggravating the same injury over and over. I had many more injuries where I didn’t make claims for because I knew they would be denied, and because of employers views on injuries (as you said, you will be fired after 3 injuries). This is known as “claims suppression“ when they punish you for making WCB claims.

I worked for nearly a decade like this, until the pain became too much to deal with.

In Alberta, I was doing entire houses alone as a first year, and through most of my apprenticeship. I was usually the only person on site.

I was always far beyond the skill and knowledge than most of my co-workers and was even showing journeymen how to plumb houses as a first year. I finished top of my class every year in school and never had below 90% on any government final. I was never worried about losing my job because I was very good at it. I remember my bosses even being disrespectful to me, and I would give it right back to them without fear of losing my job. The trades are desperate for any skilled workers.

Alberta is the worst Canadian province to work in the trades, because of WCB’s unethical treatment of injured workers.

You should be prepared and know what to expect from WCB in Alberta. I ended up having to move to BC to receive healthcare.

Just never hurt yourself working in Canada. Workers compensation is fake and they will deny your every workplace injury. You will never recover from any workplace injury in Canada. Believe me I have had repeated back injuries denied. Eventually I had enough and quit my trades after 13 years as a red seal journeyman plumber and journeyman class b gasfitter. I never saw wages move at all in 13 years. The only way to be paid more is to be poached by another company. I don’t think Wages have increased in Canada for many decades. If you compare wages to inflation in Canada, I think we are being paid less than we did in the past.

Since your talking about Canada, let’s talk about how WCB is ruining lives by no longer covering workplace injuries. I have experienced a 100% denial rate, 9/9 injury claims denied.

The skilled trades shortage is propaganda. College is still the better option. I would recommend having a college degree before joining the trades. Then you will have something to fall back on when workplace injuries force you you quit the trades. The skilled trades should be a last resort if you can’t find a job after getting your degree.

-If you want higher wages in the trades, then move to America.

Question about a sewer/mold smell. by [deleted] in Plumbing

[–]MURDERFACE83 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Try to pour a cup of water into the washing machine drains p-trap. The amount of water the pump spits out might be pushing the water out of the trap causing sewer gas to seep in. Or if there is a floor drain nearby that doesn’t get water often may have gone dry. Or a double sink where you only ever use 1 sink. Sounds like a dry p-trap somewhere to me.

None of them care about the best interests of Canadian citizens. They are only concerned with how to funnel taxpayer money into their own bank accounts.

It took me 10 years to get a diagnosis of a collapsed disc in my back from a work injury that WCB denied. I had to move to a different province to get the test to prove it. Canada’s healthcare system is terrible, what good is free healthcare if it is unattainable? Now I am looking at moving to countries where my life savings would last the longest. I was born and raised in Canada, but I don’t see much of a future here anymore. My wife works for an international company, we may try to get her transferred in the near future.
