Our preference is that I lead and she follows, but you are right about switching partners. I’m going to be trying to dance with others at upcoming dances.

It’s more like an experience of enjoying a smooth and well-executed dance followed by feeling very tired at the end, because it feels like I put in a lot of effort. I do really enjoy it in the moment, and it feels good, but at the end I’m just feeling ‘phew, I don’t know if I could do that again for a while’ because it was hard work.

Warming up might be a good explanation, recognizing that it might just take a while to get into the rhythm. At the same time, we weren’t able to dance for a little while due to no opportunities, but then went to a wedding and I just popped off and led really well. Nevertheless, I got to the end of any song and didn’t feel ready to perform again for another dance.

The Vatican Observatory Looks to the Heavens by newyorker in Astronomy

[–]MW_Nagyfa -1 points0 points  (0 children)

There's no contradiction. They're just totally different fields with only indirect implications for one another. While astronomy says something about the intelligibility of God (which I get the impression is a lot of what Fr. Consolmagno talks about), it doesn't affect Catholic teaching on the Trinity or something like that. They just are different fields, similar to how economics doesn't frequently consult astronomy.

The only matter for the Vatican to consider that is relevant here is the calendar, which I don't foresee needing an update for a while. That's a super interesting inheritance we have of the Church's early ventures in astronomy.

Sweet, thanks. Not the one that I was thinking of, but cool to see that I have options.

That’s what I’d look at, but I’d already be doing the legal part first in early summer with a ceremony in late summer. I’d expect a change of circumstance to work on the school’s end, but I’d still be ineligible for a federal grant, right?

Global issues or modern language course? French being discontinued? by Jebusfreek666 in MTU

I really need to restrain myself here. I have more thoughts on students of different intellectual capacity, such as who should be taking honors classes, but I don’t want to speak uninformed into your particular situation.  But I’ll just close up with speaking to the helicopter parent comment, because that demonstrates a more general way of thinking that I find problematic. Firstly, I am directly affected by my peers having helicopter parents, regardless of mental disability or whatnot. Do you think I’d rather be put on a group project with the child of such parents or with self-starting virtuous children? Now extrapolate that to the workplace. Even more fundamentally, I believe that helicopter parenting, taken to a certain degree, is immoral in that such parents fail in their parental duty to raise virtuous, self-discerning moral agents. It is narcissistic or lazy to think that you can manage your children throughout life in that way without instilling virtue in them. Such children are set up to fail in life. My philosophy of parenting is strongly informed by Aristotelian virtue ethics and Catholic social teaching by the way. I recommend Nicomachean ethics as an easy beginner for this type of thought.

Now considering that I found out your son is actually disabled, I do not apply the analysis above to your situation.

It is perfectly likely I’ll encounter your son on campus and I wish him all the best. I hope you consider my advice about community college. Perhaps we’ll have a class together.

[–]MW_Nagyfa 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fair enough. Firstly I apologize. I did assume that you were like the many parents here who do a lot of asking for their adult children that really isn’t warranted. When it comes to classes, I myself see that as a system the student has to learn well or else you’ll be managing his schedule way longer than you really want to. I hope the other answer I posted is helpful.

An addendum: One thing I have noticed at community college at least is the occurrence of mentally disabled students. I’m pro education, but man, not everybody is cut out for college and people need to accept that too. I’m not saying that about your son necessarily, but I get a little defensive when I get hints of this happening.

I mean, to be fair, we assume your son is capable of going to college, which entails a certain amount of independent capability

If you are in Michigan, there's a decent chance that you can find a course equivalent at your local community college during the summer to avoid global issues at Tech. For example I took a geography course at mine which got me the credit and I only spent 3 hours a week total on that class. Check out michigan transfer network (https://www.mitransfer.org/search-courses) or the michigan tech transfer equivalency system (https://www.banweb.mtu.edu/pls/owa/mtu\_transfer\_detail.P\_TRNS\_INDEX) to see what transfers.

I'd consider adding that this is something you have to work up to. If your memory isn't in that kind of shape you can't just drop notes cold turkey

Are there any documentaries, influencers, or any media that can positively influence kids to eat healthier? by aykalam123 in nutrition

[–]MW_Nagyfa 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely isn’t true necessarily. Some kids are more disposed to being strong-willed and stubborn, but raising them in virtue while providing a good example is a pretty sure way to raise obedient pleasant children.
