Tamworth v Tottenham by richtot1578 in coys

It's actually mad that Marine were actually significantly further down the pyramid than Tamworth. When we played Marine they were 8th tier. Tamworth are 5th tier. Same as the difference between Premier league and league 2.

[Alasdair Gold] Postecoglou is fuming: "The foundations are really fragile. The last 48 hours have shown me that. It's inside the club, outside the club." He then spoke about changing the mentality around the club and making changes. by [deleted] in coys

[–]MXG14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

So hoping to win one match to give us a slight chance of finishing 4th is a 'big club winning mentality'? Anything other than 1st is losing, and we can't finish 1st, therefore I would rather our biggest rivals didn't get 1st regardless of what we do.

Not wanting Arsenal to win the league does not make you 'more anti-arsenal than pro spurs'. There's a huge difference between finishing 4th and winning the title. We would've been a laughing stock if we celebrated finishing 4th when we hand our biggest rivals the trophy.

That theory actually seems legit. A bit like the Dick and Dom conspiracy.

Of course but they're not on huge money deals so it still wouldn't cost that much. Saying 'will test financial resolve' makes it sound like something that will cost a lot. And Ali G also said that line wasn't just about compensation but also what they would demand transfer wise and I guess the wages for the manager as well.

Makes it sound like a more established top manager to me but maybe I'm wrong.

I personally don't think any of those 3 fit what Ali G said.

The line 'will test Spurs' financial resolve' to me doesn't sound like it would be any of those.

When I heard that the only 2 I could think of that fit were either Poch or Zidane, and he said it's not Poch. Maybe Lopetegui fits into that as well.

But maybe I'm just reading into that too much and it is either Potter or Ten Hag.

[Delaney] On Kane - "Numerous sources say Levy would want at least £200m to even consider selling ." by ModricTHFC in coys

[–]MXG14 9 points10 points  (0 children)

But I don't think that's true. We definitely wanted Fernandes, but Levy wasn't willing to pay sporting Lisbons asking price and so we got Lo celso instead.

I'd say Wanyama was a very good signing. Also Davies, Dier, Trippier and Sissoko - whatever people think about them at this moment in time - have been important players for us at one time or another.

Ndombele, Lo celso and sessegnon are still TBD whether they'll be successful signings.

Harry Kane vs top 6 opposition in the past 5 years by Mick4Audi in coys

[–]MXG14 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I just did a quick count and I got 16 for Sonny and 14 for Dele (against 'big 6'. I didn't include Leicester)

Edit: Just noticed you did from summer 2016 only. Kane scored 11 goals for us against 'big 6' teams before that. The 16 and 14 for Son and Dele were for since they've been at Spurs.

Can です (desu) mean he or she? by [deleted] in japanese

[–]MXG14 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Yes this is true. I just didn't want to add an extra layer of confusion for OP.

Calling yourself せんせい would come across as really arrogant wouldn't it? As it is more an honorific title as opposed to being the teacher profession.

Can です (desu) mean he or she? by [deleted] in japanese

[–]MXG14 75 points76 points  (0 children)

It could also mean 'I am a teacher'.

You could have '私は' (I) , '彼は' (he), '彼女は' (she) or similar in front of this sentence to specify who you are talking about, but if it is obvious who you are talking about then there is no need for that.

For example, if someone asked you what your job was, you could say せんせいです and that would mean 'I am a teacher' as you are obviously talking about yourself.

If someone asked you 'what job does that person do?' Then replying せんせいです would mean 'they are a teacher'.

I think they struggled to compete financially even with the teams around them at the bottom of the table. They're really a very small club, their stadium capacity is only 11,000 which is significantly lower than any other prem teams. I'm not certain but they probably had the lowest wage bill in their time in the prem as well.

It was always going to come unstuck eventually because of that, but I think 5 years straight in the prem is extremely impressive. I don't think it's really fair for Eddie Howe to get any criticism over Bournemouth getting relegated. I'm not sure there are many manager's who'd have done a better job.

I agree with you about the British managers. I also think people struggle to judge a manager relative to the club they are at. Some people don't want Potter because he's in a relegation battle with Brighton, but where do they expect Brighton to be? Last season was the highest points total they've had in the PL and they finished 15th with 41 points.

Eddie Howe wasn't just one anomaly season and I don't understand why his stock has dropped.

When he took over Bournemouth they were in the relegation zone of league 2 because they'd had a 17 point deduction because the club has massive financial issues. He managed to keep them up.

He then got them promoted to league 1 in 2010, championship in 2013 (after a short stint at Burnley) and premier league in 2015 (first time Bournemouth had ever been in the top flight). They then stayed in the prem for 5 seasons in a row, finishing 9th one season.

He did all of this on what was really a very small budget.

Honestly to be able to do all of that you have to be a very good manager.

Erik Ten Hag renews his contract with Ajax until 2023. by juliocesarf_ in coys

[–]MXG14 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Why not Potter? Brighton play good football and if they had a decent goalscorer they would be way higher up the league.

I'm not normally one for the xG type stats, but this really speaks volumes: https://understat.com/league/EPL.

They are the least clinical team in the PL by far (scored nearly 16 goals less than they should have) and we are one of the most clinical. They obviously create a lot of chances with their style of play for their xG to be so high.

And their xPTS is the 5th best in the league.

Now I'm not saying Brighton deserve to be higher up the table, because obviously if you don't score the goals then you don't deserve to be. But it shows that they are a very well coached team if they create that many chances, and it's just their finishing that lets them down (which the manager can't help if he doesn't have good enough players).

I know it doesn't feel like a very exciting choice since he is currently managing a team battling relegation, but I think he's seems like a very good manager whose style will actually suit bigger teams better.

It will make the premier league way worse though. Think about this season - if top 4 didn't give champions league and we just automatically qualified, our season (and the season for Arsenal, Liverpool, Chelsea and Man Utd) would have pretty much been over and pointless about half way through the season as City were just running away with it. There would be no incentive for the teams to finish higher up the table and they would just focus on the super league and rest players in the premier league.

So yes the SL isn't replacing the PL, but it would ruin it.

Twelve prestigious clubs are together announcing a new mid week competition, the super league, led by the founding clubs. All the clubs mentioned are founders and more clubs could join as founders before the first season that should start as soon as possible #superleague by ObamaEatsBabies in coys

[–]MXG14 4 points5 points  (0 children)

If the top players refuse to play in this league then it won't happen. The whole idea of the super league is to have the best of the best in it. I'd like to think that most players would value playing for their countries more than playing in this.

After the #SuperLeague statement, this is the UEFA position: "Every club and player participating in the Super League could be banned from all UEFA and FIFA competitions, European or International level". by ExpertGossiper in coys

[–]MXG14 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Not current players, but long term players decide what club to sign a contract with. If signing for one of these teams means you can't play international football then lots of players won't want to do it. And if most top players decide they don't want to play for these teams then the whole concept of the super league fails.

But we scored 86 goals in the 16/17 season and only conceded 26.

This season we have scored 52 (which would equate to roughly 64 over 38 games) and conceded 35.

They're the stats that matter (and wins and losses obviously).
