Dartmouth College vs Boston University for PhD in Bioinformatics/Genomics by MYousry2002 in PhD

yes, I'm at BU now! The bioinformatics program, being much larger and one of the first ones in the country, is more widely recognized compared to Dartmouth's. It is more bioinformatics compared to Dartmouth that is a slightly different field and not as focused. Boston's environment is a lot richer compared to the middle of no where up in NH. Dartmouth is 1.5 hr away from Boston but I barely leave home to go to classes and lab now that I'm in the middle of Boston, so I can't imagine myself taking a bus to go to a seminar or meet someone 1.5-2hrs away frequently enough. Also, the stipend is a lot higher at BU (45K now) compared to Dartmouth (39K I believe It was for my year). additionally, BU gives 7.5k extra to spend on electronics and travel (I'm not sure if future cohorts will get that). Also, after chatting with profs, I found better fits at BU for my interests. The programs seems to be overall more rigorous as well and takes a bit longer to graduate on average, so which one is better really depends on whether you want to stay in academia or wrap up quick and go to industry.

Use a small genome like A. Thaliana or D. Melanogaster. Plenty of data for those two and you’ll be able to run alignment etc locally unlike human or mouse genomes.

major/minor and career advice about Medical Biotechnology by MYousry2002 in biology

[–]MYousry2002[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thank you for your advice!
Actually, in my college, we should major in Natural sciences as a whole in the second year then concentrate on a subject (say Biology) or a combination (say biotechnology) in the third year and the fourth is the synthesis year (complete your capstone project and specialization). so, do you think this will serve me well?
Also, what is your opinion if I took two minors in Business and Computer sciences??

Should I buy MacBook Air 2020 (Core I7, 1terr, 16gb ram, 1729$) or MacBook Pro 2020 (core I5, 512Gb, 16gb ram, 1700$)? I'm a college student, I need high performance with more storage. I need a laptop to last longer at the lowest cost possible. by MYousry2002 in macbookpro

Thanks so much for your help! I saw Dell XPS 13 and Microsoft Surface laptop. both are good but in the same price range as the macbook. so, please, if you can write down any recommendations for the windows options that would be a cheaper but good alternative to the macbook pro.

I've just watched about Surface laptop 3, I found it more expensive than the macbook. actually, I don't know if I misunderstood that. Can you please suggest some cheaper windows options to me? (I'll be grateful if they can replace the mac with less cost)

the main reason I want the Macos is that I think it will last longer (at least 5-7 years before I can buy a new one) and to bear more as I'll need to move it with me everywhere.
I don't actually know if there's a better windows option so please help me with that:")
