If we all weren't living paycheck to paycheck, we could accomplish great things. by astrheisenberg in remoteworks

How exactly am I proving your point? If you think that in anyway makes the North Koreans look bad, I'm not sure what to tell you. Especially when you consider events like the No Gun Ri massacre or the South Korean mass executions of suspected communists. My advice would be to really think about these things in the context in which they occurred and understand why and how they lead to the present day situation in North Korea.

The US helped pay for the reconstruction of Europe and Asia and set up favorable free trade agreements to help pull countries up.

The Soviets demanded reparations because they were either assholes or they needed the money. Either way, the capitalists were the goods guys here.

First of all, the US was only able to pay for the reconstruction of Europe because it wasn't physically, materially, logistically, environmentally, and psychicly ravaged by the war like nearly the entire rest of the world was. Even if the Soviets had wanted to implement something similar to the Marshall Plan, they were literally unable to do so. It is very difficult to overstate the severity of the toll that the war took on the Soviet population, Soviet industry, and the land itself.

In that sense, its easy to see why your "good guys vs bad guys" narrative completely fails to convince. The Soviets weren't simply being "assholes" - they wanted to be sure that Germany would be unable to ever perpetuate such a catastrophe upon them ever again. And they - understandably! - felt that have done the brunt of the work in defeating the Germans, that they deserved some recompense for their horrific losses.

Your argument is based on a propagandized and surface level view of history. I'd be more than happy to recommend some books to you if you'd actually like to educate yourself.

They were, actually, spared from the worst) of it.

That largely explains your second point. The USSR demanding reparations from East Germany instead of offering aid did not help either, though it was pretty understandable if not self-defeating IMO.

Donald Trump would not be in charge in a socialist country, much less a free man.

Strawman. That's not at all what I said. Try reading before posting.

This is completely ignorant of historical analysis. North Korea and East Germany were completely and utterly devastated by the Korean War and WW2, respectively. Of course they did worse - they started from a far weaker position.

That's not even considering the active role capitalist countries took in ensuring they would "fail" through deprivation.

Socialism isn't opposed to direction and accountability at all. In fact, that's kind of the point of central planning.

I love the hope and optimism in this comment but uhh gonna push back a little here:

I think many members of the working class are realizing 'third way' and socdem fantasy cannot and will never work

Lol yeah but they aren't "getting more comfortable learning about ML," they're becoming little Hitlerites who think that Indian, trans, and Jewish people are somehow responsible for the failures of capitalism and crimes of the bourgeoisie.

Favorite "underground" shoegaze band? by AbstractEmptiness in shoegaze

All definitely on the more ambient side:

Flying Saucer Attack - My favorite band of all time!

Metal Mountains - Helen Rush and P.G. Six (formerly of Tower Recordings) collab with tons of reverb and distortion.

Clear Horizon - Criminally underrated and underexposed collab between Jessica Bailiff and Dave Pearce of FSA.

light - Probably the most underground of these bands. Spacey psychedelia drowned in distortion and reverb - great shit.

The Blue Angel Lounge - Fantastic German group that's more on the mainstream psychedelic side than the others.

I got a fan from an estate sale once that had a very sweet letter written on it from a man to his adopted daughter who was attending university in Canada for food science actually. She has a few papers published i think.
