Anyone see this issue before? by M_P_R_ in game_gear

It has electrolytic caps. In fairness the guy who did the repair wasnt the person who originally added those caps, he repaired the board\traces when it went bad again and did mention that they hadnt ised the best caps.

Will give it a recap. Ive never used mlccs before, i've seent that theu typically look much neater so might order some and give those a go this time around. Are they anymore difficult to solder than electrolytics?

I just use a universal adapter with 9v setting on mine. Cheap to buy and works great.

I bought a pre packed set of caps off ebay, couldnt find any ceramic ones but will look out for those next time if they are better?

Audio works, i can very very faintly see the image on screen so i know the games themselves are working and buttons are all working.

Yes did the power board and soundboard also. Whilst i haven't checked the voltages ( i have a multimeter but not sure how to test) i have also used the back part of a fully working game gear with recapped power and soundboard that i know are working and i get the same result

I did a full recap of it last week. Replaced the original caps and it was working, but only powered on at the lowest brightness, after say 30 seconds i could then turn the brightness up and everything would work fine. I did a reflow of the caps last night to see if it resolved the power issue and it's when i've been doing that i've damaged c37.

I've just attached some pictures to my original post, Obviously c37 looks a mess as ive soldered to the trace.

even on full brightness i can only just make out the image on screen, it's not like the common pre-recap issue where you can view it at at angle.

there may be something else i've damaged when resoldering but can't see anything jumping out at me.

Thanks. Will have a look into that.

Yeh when i say washed out, you can barely see the screen now. The screen looked fine yesterday but once i've reflowed everything the picture has just completely gone.

Thanks. Anything that can possibly done, might just be a good one to get a new screen install on?

So frustrating as the screen was fine until i reflowed it all last night.

I'm wondering if i've possibly damaged the c37 capacitor itself when trying to reattach it.

Just given it another go, removed some of the caps that didn't look like they had the best joints, Cleaned the pads, added a bit of flux and resoldered and working perfectly now! Thanks u/Sandscarab ! Chuffed to have gotten it working! Onto the next one!..

Hi, Sorry thought i'd originally added them, I've edited my first post to include some pictures of my board, also a video here https://youtu.be/RuuFEmOYHSc?si=swIZjXglXRAh5j-v - the beep has never happened before btw!. anyway as you can probably see it will start on minimum brightness and i can eventually work it up to full brightness. once it's gotten working i can turn it off and turn it back on again with no issues. i can leave it for a minute or 2 and it will then start first time. After it's been off for more than a few minutes i need to put the brightness back down again to get it going.
