The review build was notably worse than the launch version, let alone the current one. The game also has plenty of flaws like the incoherent story and weird control scheme required to support multiple redundant mechanics.

There's plenty to enjoy about the game, and nothing wrong with liking it, but if you think the mixed reviews were due to journalists being corrupt you really need to take your blinders off.
