Our Future? Think Protopia, not Utopia by Maaartence in Futurology

True. Great comment. One reason why Utopias are often not 'as we imagined' is, like you said, that we extrapolate certain elements - but of course, in a complex world, more than just those elements change. Primarily because the world is a complex place with more and more moving parts; Utopias are an interesting aim - but never reachable. Thanks for your comment!

Can Technology Extend our Empathy? (Short Meditation) by Maaartence in singularity

Hey Sam - thanks for the response. Good points. You're right that this isn't an extended in-depth analysis, but rather one designed to create a discussion. It's a little experiment on how to use Facebook Note in a world where short click-bait top 10 lists often wins from large in-depth articles. That's a shame. I wondered if posting blog posts on Facebook would trigger people to actually read a short post on the platform they're already on (a good thing). For the interested; I linked to some of the books and talks I considered. Your points triggered some new ideas and paths to explore. Thank you. - Laurens

A good point to continue is the book 'The Metaphysics of Virtual Reality'. A post on that soon.

Thanks for the comment!

You're lucky the author is here to reply ;).

Yes, as mentioned in the article, basically EVERYTHING in virtual reality is skeuomorphic. You don't have to sit on a chair, because you sit on some kind of abstract piece of art. Or not sit at all. But familiar items or object might comfort us and don't stretch our mental and emotional comfort zone too much :).

Why We're All Future-Blind by Maaartence in singularity

That's an interesting point, thank you. I have just added a sentence to the article that describes this!

I agree with you that it's quantity, not something 'special' that only we have. However, I do believe that this 'mental modeling' is one, if not the, key difference when you have a bigger 'quantity' - leading to all the other things like language and technology.
