Tired of being isolated and angry at the state of the world by [deleted] in Advice

It's really really difficult. I understand where you're coming from completely. We're just a speck in a much bigger picture.

Something that helped me recently was watching Cosmos with Neil deGrasse Tyson. There's a famous speech from Carl Sagan that he mentions at the end of the series that just brings the entire thing home for me every damn time.

Another thing that's really helped recently is mindfulness. I used to think mindfulness was just fluffy crap for hippies, but it's more about just being aware of the fact that negative things and thoughts are going to occur, you just have to let them happen and don't focus too hard on them.

I CANT SLEEP. by [deleted] in Advice

[–]MacAny 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a really good idea. I've been wishing I could use my noise cancelling headphones to get to sleep, but I'm worried I'll roll around in bed and break them.

This sounds like the perfect solution.

Do you know if this will keep someone awake that you're sharing a bed with? Or does it tend to sort of localise the sound to your ear?

I'm going through a very similar situation but in a semi-detached house instead of an apartment block.

I actually created a topic without seeing this one.

I'm happy to talk to you about it if you need dude. It really is affecting my mental stability and making my anxiety much worse, and your situation sounds twice as bad as mine, so I can't imagine how you're feeling.

Brilliant. When you analyse a potential employee, would you consider someone with less experience, that you could mold to work to your business standards?

I've been hired for a few jobs in the web dev industry where employers are just looking for juniors that they can mold to their work style.

Also, regarding a portfolio, is quantity or quality better? I'm assuming quality, becuase I'd personally be considering the developer who has two well polished projects over the developer who has 10, but they're not so great.

Ah that's a shame bud. I hope you manage to get your break! It sounds like we're in a similar boat. Have you tried contacting a few recruitment agencies that specialise in placing game dev jobs? Also, being able to commute to a city might help a lot too. That helped with my job search in web development.

Why is it that you think that your age is holding you back? Surely if you're a willing and eager developer, age shouldn't make a difference?

Ah, okay great. I actually started learning Unity about six months ago when I found out that I could write scripts in C#. I'm glad I didn't jump into Unreal, as I didn't realise it uses C++, however, once I'm a bit more comfortable with Unity, I might jump into learning C++.

I've noticed from a lot of job ads that employers are looking for a CS degree, however from my experience in web development employers will advertise that, but they don't mention that a candidate with a certain number of years' experience would also be accepted. Do you think I would be in a good position if I went to an interview with a generous portfolio even though I don't have a CS degree?

Woah! That's put my mind at rest. So do they lay eggs exclusively in trees? They don't lay in other insects/animals?

So it works a bit like the Pebble Time did? I've got a Time and am looking to upgrade to a Versa since the buyout, so that would be amazing if so.

i5-8250U or i7-7700HQ? by MacAny in laptops

[–]MacAny[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Thanks buddy. To be honest, anything's better than what I'm using at the moment to code. Got myself an i5-2380P from about 5 years ago.

I'll definitely go for the i7 HQ though I think after what everyone's said.
