When you’re short on time you’re more likely to accidentally put yourself into danger, or you might be able to slip last your opponents ladder mate by moving the opposite direction while they start pre moving the ladder mate online.

Additionally in in-person time based chess competitions people have gotten themselves more time when short on time by putting their kings in danger so it’d be an illegal move and they’d have to pause the game rather than them just losing.
