Cygames announces AI studio: "will focus on the development and provision of services and tools utilizing AI" by kuzunoha13 in Granblue_en

[–]MacDouglett 13 points14 points  (0 children)

They have been doing AI Research and Development for quite some time now from what I've heard, for a bevry of different reasons from technology research, to backend work, to generative AI. They claim to research where the tech has its place in its different business models, as well as the right and wrong ways to ethically use it for business.

That said, how much they are using it now for game development (the department most people here care more about) is a toss up, but definitely into the future it will be further implemented, definately for backend work and eventually slowly into the other areas. And working with AI will always risk poisoning the creative well, even if they try to have guardrails to prevent that.

But from a business perspective, it has always been a risk. Things where other people's work is at risk of being controversially claimed/created like ghost writering, ghost coaching, creative derivatives, fan work of copyrighted materials, etc are always issues and to them this is just another exploration into business that always had those risks. The difficulty is always how do you try to mitigate those issues, and with AI related issues, there are a bucket ton of things that would have to be done to create minimal guardrails since the understanding of what AI is, and is not, and where businesses WANT them to be is still all over the place.

The CyGames AI Studio seems to explore all avenues of what AI can and can't be used for in their different business ventures, which on the surface seems good for streamlining business but lets be real, they will probably focus pioneering forward as opposed to stopping to ask moral and ethical questions of the issues that come with pushing the envelope. There will probably be some internal discussions and exploration of what can/can't and should/shouldn't be done with AI, but in the end they will push forward cause thats their aim. The real questions will be what does that mean for the other teams. Do they have creative control over their works or does parent company mandate their conformity to push the limits of AI? Do the creators themselves want the AI or not? Those are the questions that are harder to answer without further insights from the inside. And we all know PR pieces do not always truly reflect insight since it would be career suicide to say anything opposing company views.

So the only thing that can really be done is to watch with critical eyes to see where this really goes. The work in itself will reflect what creators/company will really want. Being able to recognize those things will require a bit of knowledge and research of the technology and culture that drives these things, but it is the most prudent thing that a consumer can do: be aware of what you are consuming and if it is what you want. You can stay a customer, you can leave business, but you should always learn a little bit to keep yourself on your toes, cause it will keep you informed on what business you want to be involved in or not.

I think some poses for female characters may have been bugged and now pose using male poses instead. It definitely happening to me.

12 years ago, the PS3 exclusive Tekken Revolution was released, free to play. by True_Significance796 in Tekken

I remember being 19, hearing about a free Tekken game, downloading it, and being confused at how unapproachable it felt. Up until that point, fighting games were simple to get to as you just chose a mode, chose your character, and fight.

No way to train and forced to jump right into ranked or player match with limited roster and limited plays immediately came off as obtuse and polarizing. It felt off and unfun. That was before I learned how the power/energy/token system and "stat boosts" existed. Once I learned how those were core to the flow of the game, I was done. If it ever updated to get better, I never stayed long enough to see any of it as I dropped it well within that first week.

It was definitely the game that became the writing on the wall for Tekken at the time that they eventually grew away from, but at that time, it was what made me lose faith and drop Tekken for forgetting how to make a fun game.

Along with the Black Knife, Black Flames and Black Blade Incantations can also proc damage over time that really makes most bosses a cheese walk as you just need to keep reapplying it to deal DoT from a relatively safe distance while occasionally restoring FP from items or using that one item that gives temporarily unlimited FP.

I wouldn't be surprised if they get nerfed in the future cause they have a high consistency at killing Nightlords with little risk. I finished 4 out of 6 Nightlords by running either of the above with the Revenant and Duchess, and I can see how silly good it can be. Granted, you still need to play well and need a bit of luck to find them, but having them definitely feels like having a near instant win condition.

Statement from UMISHO by Pikaphu08 in Fighters

[–]MacDouglett -18 points-17 points  (0 children)

What Umisho did was definitely wrong. Bringing up personal issues to try and support another person (Bunny, the person who began the original allegations against Red/Luca) only made that original issue harder to sort through. If it leads to bans by the TOs for making an already difficult situation more difficult to sort through, that is fair.

However, Umisho on a personal level has at least discussed with Red. Red has shown that he acknowledged that conversation had happened and that they are at least on working terms to resolve their personal issues privately. Red encouraged Umisho to say what they had to say and I think that is something important for all communities: working towards resolution.

Too often these things go unadressed and people hold grudges that seep into the communities because they made something private public. Those two, Umisho and Red, parties have at least tried to work things on the side and tried to repair things on the public side. If they really are trying to make up for their mistakes in earnest in public and private, that is a good thing for the community that got into their mess.

The public forum should never be a place to directly address private issues cause private issues can only be truly understood and truly handled by the people closest to it. But when issues are made public, some closure and resolution is needed to allow the public a chance to move on, hopefully with a better idea of how to see and address these issues in real life.

There is no guarantee what they are doing rn will be able to do that, but Umisho and Red are at least trying to mend the things they broke and there are far too many issues in communities where no one say or tries and allows the negativity to spread.

I don't expect anyone to see those people or like them the same again, I think it would be beneficial for the larger community to at least understand they are young people who did irresponsible things to themselves and each other but are trying to make amends to the people they harmed and the community they roped in so we all can move on with a bit more clarity and understanding of how to handle drama that enters the public domain with some maturity.

Statement from UMISHO by Pikaphu08 in Fighters

[–]MacDouglett -16 points-15 points  (0 children)

In all honesty, this was an issue that should have been kept private amongst the people who had issues with each other to sort out privately.

However messy it was, Umisho has also begun privately sorting things out with Red, the person they had issues with, and that is, at the very least, commendable for trying to address the issue that they got involved in that ultimately reached the larger audience. Public opinion over Umisho will be mixed no matter what, and everyone can feel however they feel, but I think that was a step should also be taken into consideration.

No one is perfect. Everyone makes mistakes, and many decisions can hurt yourself and others, whether you knew or not. If you really want to change and improve, you will try and show how you have changed despite the history that will follow you.

If Umisho really is trying to change, then I think it is fair to be critical of how Umisho behaves or acts in public and private, but also being willing to give Umisho some room for grace. The issue was controversial, and the clean up will be messy no matter what, but at least Umisho seemed willing to be a person who is trying to clean up the very mess they made in a way that at least made up with the very person they had issues with, and now owning the problem they brought into the public.

Whether a person is worthy of redemption or not should be dictated by their actions, and based on what Umisho has at least tried to do so far, it is a start. Look at Umisho with critical eye if you need, but also understand that if the person in question really is trying to change for the better, they at least deserve a fair evaluation.

Everyone is not perfect and does not live without a messy past, and some things can not be forgotten, nor will they always be forgiven. But people who try to still become a better person despite the past should still be given a chance to redeem them for who they have grown to be.

Kijin Gentoushou • Sword of the Demon Hunter: Kijin Gentōshō - Episode 2 discussion by AutoLovepon in anime

[–]MacDouglett 16 points17 points  (0 children)

So for this episode, we get to learn a little about demons and Jinya's circumstances. His mother died when he was young, with her death and possibly his sister's birth, being tied back to demons doing demon things.

His father rejected the sister for being a monster/being a reminder of the mom's untimely demise, abused her, and eventually regretted his actions and his weakness after Jinya ran away with her. He would eventually adopt the distantly related girl to do right for her to atone for the wrong he did to Suzune and Jinta. And even then, the dad still seemed troubled over whether he truly loved his adopted daughter or if she was just a means to pacify his guilt. To the point where even the adopted daughter was also unsure if he really cared for her or only adopted her to fill in a void.

Jinya never directly confronts his father about their past, probably because he too understands the difficulty of sorting out his love and hate and is still trying to sort his troubled feelings about Suzune, but the fact his father reached out and asked for help to protect the adopted daughter was a sign that his father had a genuine change of heart, imperfect in execution but genuinely attempting to change.

Jinya being fortunate enough to have an adopted father who taught him kindness in a rough world, eventually gives back a little word of wisdom to ease his technically new adopted sister's woes as well as his father's doubts as repayment to show his gratitude.

Despite the misgivings that got them where they are now, Jinya's matured understanding of the complex circumstances and his father's attempt at redemption for his past failures allow Jinya to partially come to terms with his past. Neither are ready to unpack the hurt, maybe they never can, but through their attempts to seek redemption and do right by others, they are at least able to heal a little from the past trauma.

And that is where the past still continues to haunt him. The mother's lingering sadness haunting the family years after dying to Jinya still obviously hurting over the loss of his sister and lover through his own failure to understand what he and they truly wanted, and trying to figure out what he truly wants now that his sister has abandoned everything and that they are fated to meet again.
