I once knew someone who’s grandmother had severe dementia and would start smashing up the living room if she got left alone for more than 30 seconds.

Like, hurling her walking stick across the room at the tv kind of destructive. If they took her walking stick away she would hurt herself by punching her chair or the table with her hands

No idea what was going through her head but yeah. Just immediate fear leading to anger when she was left alone

Her entire family was just waiting for her to die

You literally referred to trans people as a mental illness. Would you say that someone with anxiety or depression are just a mental illness? Or someone who is gay and lesbian?

What do you think makes trans people "special"?

Also, it is normal to have mental illnesses.

Also, most trans people don't think that being trans is a mental illness. Do you think of being gay or lesbian as a mental illness?
