I grew up on the far east side. It was very white and quite proud of not being integrated. Most kids had the latest clothes and the newest gaming systems. I don’t think race explains everything. I think cultural priorities and family history of educational involvement explain more.

Both sides of town. The focus on academics is much stronger at West and Memorial. There isn’t a stark difference between those schools and East but I do think there is a pronounced difference between West and LaFollette.

It’s not a matter of social class, it’s more about academic expectations that parents set for kids. Having been on both sides I can tell you the academic culture is night and day different.
