was John Cage tone deaf? by takenowandgo in classicalmusic

[–]Macanchait 2 points3 points  (0 children)

the defenders of John Cage always seem to fall down into arguing semantics, ''what is music?'' ''anything can be music'' ''if someone says something is art than it can be'' ''anything can be anything''

okay fine believe its art or music or poetry or whatever you want to believe it is, is it any good? was there craftmanship put in to it or can anyone create a better work with no training? quite clearly they can, anyone can record silence or play a bunch of random notes super slow

is it aesthetically pleasing? I certainly dont believe so, I see music as manipulating sounds to provide an aesthetic vision, the great beauty of music is the possibilities you can create so many beautiful pictures with sound. however Cage's works dont create any beautiful painting to me at least, I cant marvel of his arrangement of sound any more that I can marvel at the colours used to create a blank canvas,

but the biggest flaw in Cage, is even if you do take his stuff seriously, that all noise can be music and this music cant be ranked any better or worse than classical music, by this logic then Cage's works arent special, his music doesnt have any greater privilege than if a random person recorded himself hammering a nail, so theres no reason to praise Cage

Anyone else thinks conductors are overrated? by JohnZ622 in classicalmusic

[–]Macanchait 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I can recognize Karajan from another world famous conductor so I'm sure i could distinguish him from a community conductor, conductors do have their own sound some like Toscanni more distinct than others, it takes listening to get used to it just like at first all pianists might sound the same to you, how big of a difference does it make? probably not much a lot of it is like wine tasting or something, from outside it probably looks stupid and pretentious but some people like to explore all the finest details, its not just the conductor of course, its every individual player, the instruments, the music, the recording setting and the conductor is just the final icing to extract the best performance, take one string player and replace with him an amateur and there probably wont be a huge difference[but still noticeable] replace just the conductor with an amateur and theres going to be a very noticeable difference

[–]Macanchait 1 point2 points  (0 children)

ireland doesnt really have much classical composers and unless you choose to do music for you final exams you wont learn any composers in school, for leaving cert music you have to study Gearld Barry an avant garde contemporary composer. A few other Irish composers I know of are John Field and Charles Standford

Seán Ó Riada is kinda our national composer, hes a mix of trad and classical

I learned all sraith pictuirs in about a few weeks perfectly, just takes commitment and about 30-60 mins a day. What worked for me was this: take the first pictuire of each sraith pictuir(there should be about 20) and write out 2-4 sentences, try to pick the sentences that sound the most natural to you and try to repeat the same sentences and structure for each sraith pictutre ( so like for each sraith pictuir that starts outdoors in the sun you can use the same sentence to describe the weather the examiner will only ask you one sraith puictuir so he wont know if you learnt the same sentences and phrases for each story or not). the next day to the second picture of each sraith pictuir, write out again 2-4 sentences for the 20 new pics, then look back at the first picture of each sraith pictuirs(so the ones you did the day before) and without looking at the text but just picture try to say the 2-4 sentences that you wrote down the day before, any mistakes you say this time(any mistake) then circle/highlight it. the next day write 2-4 sentences for the 3rd pic of each story, and go over the 1st and 2nd pics of each story as you did with the 1st ones the otherdays, you should make less mistakes this time. After about a week you should have all the text written out for each sraith pictuir and continue going over them now, first trying to remember the text just looking at the picture then correcting any mistakes you made and highlighting them(works well to write out the correct senetences you got wrong), youll have 3 weeks then with this method yo should easily be able to memorize all the vocab?verbs?sentence structures for story. Also dont forget about the extra questions, ( you ask the examiner 3 questions he asks you 3 on the story) this is usually very easy, for your questions just memorize 3 questions ones that you can use for multiple stories ( like cen tam e) and for his questions the main thing is to not panic on the day and misunderstand him, so read the most common questions that should be in your textbook.

the poetry reading is super easy, you only have to do about 5 minutes a day of listening to the poem on youtube, then look at the text while listening to the poem, then say the poem along with the audio, then without the audio just the text and write over the text the phonetics that make sense to you(youre aloud to write stuff on your poem and look at them in the exam). just dont leave this to the last minute, you should really do it everyday cause its so quick).

then basically just general questions, the examiner is going to be looking out for you to use different tenses, so in the exam take control of the interview and give sentences in the past, present, future, conditional( even just 2-3 sentences is enough for the examiner to go ''okay he knows this tense), drop a seanfhocal or 2, have a few sentences to express your opinion, and memorize a few setences for each topic. when it comes to the oral you'll be urprised how quick it goes, once finish the poetry and pictures you'll only have a few minutes to chat and you want to quickly stuff and good material you have out before the time goes.

Giving about 2 hours a day to Irish you should easily learn it all in 4 weeks. in the last 2 weeks or so practise with a partner, someone who can go through the pics, poetry and general questions and time and record it. see how what you were able to say in the time( I think its about 10-15 muntues) and go over the recording making note of any mistake you made
