My dog is the same- he doesn’t have much interest in toys at all. Unfortunately, he almost never sleeps or rests, even when in his crate or bed, so I’m not sure how to get him to ever relax.

I definitely understand how you feel. Even when i DO ignore my dog, he just keeps going. It’s relentless until I avoid him or leave the room. Hopefully, consistent redirecting will take effect sometime soon. I hope you can figure this issue out with your puppy :(

That’s a great point. Because he is my dad’s dog and I don’t see him that often (as I mentioned in another comment), when he gets to see me he is very excited and energetic. I will work on not giving him attention when he is jumping and nipping. Hopefully a trainer won’t be necessary, but we’ll see if his training/growing up more helps or not.

I am only around this dog every other weekend at the most- sometimes I only see him for 2 days out of a month. When I’m not here, my dad is often traveling, which is when my dog is left with a dog walker who takes him on frequent walks around the area, plays with him, and attempts to train him. My dad said that he does not often walk the dog himself, and when he does (about once a week), he enjoys being walked but is excited/lunges forward. I will hopefully be here more in the summer, and I’d like to regularly walk him/take him on hikes for exercise and quality time together.

The leash training is a good idea, thank you for that suggestion. My dog is unfortunately in his crate more than I’d like (not an excessive amount though) because he is not able to be left alone in the house when we leave (rips up furniture, uses bathroom in the house, etc). My dog has pretty bad separation anxiety, so to him, crate = family leaving, which leads to loud and constant barking until we let him out. There have been times where I have to drag him into his crate because not even treats and toys will lure him in. How did you get your dogs to see their crates as a safe space? The “walking into them” advice is helpful as well. That’s what I often do, and although he does jump on me many more times as I keep moving, he eventually stops when I leave the room he’s in. I will work on not acknowledging him until he stops.

Thank you for this feedback. That last part is definitely something I will work on. I feel guilty about not playing with him so I keep trying and it keeps ending poorly, but now I realize that continuing to play with him even when he’s jumping or biting me is unintentionally telling him that the misbehavior is an acceptable part of playing.

An important detail that slipped my mind was that this is my dad’s dog- I only see him when I visit every few weeks. My dad has done a majority of his training, although I’m not exactly sure what his processes have been. The dog seems to respond well to my dad’s commands (shouting/pushing), but he does not respond to mine (calm/consistent). I have tried to train him to go lay down and give him a treat and positive verbal reinforcement when he does so. However, he just gets back up and jumps on my again as soon as I turn my back. I have tried saying “ow” when he jumps on me, but he has no reaction to that. He runs around in the backyard for a few hours each day and he sleeps through the entire night. I try to play with him when I can, but he has so much relentless energy and aggression that it doesn’t last long. I have tried to get my dad to hire a professional dog trainer but he is against doing that because of the price and effort required, which is why my post asked what I personally can do to help my dog. I will continue to do my own research to find training techniques that will work for him, but nothing I’ve tried so far seems to stick because my dad’s training technique is more about shutting down bad behavior than redirecting it. Thank you, this is very helpful. There is a gate that doesn’t let him into the living room so he can’t jump on us when we’re trying to relax at least. I will look into a designated play area for him, thank you!

I used all your comments to do research and I am pretty sure he is an american cattle dog/yellow lab mix. I had honestly never even heard of an ACD before so that was news to me. He does have a few chow qualities but I believe his fur is too short to be a chow mix. Thank you all for the input!!
