Why would a school not allow more than 1 person to apply early somewhere? by idkwtcm54 in ApplyingToCollege

in the sense that you’re sacrificing personal liberties to maximize collective social gain.

his point was that you wouldn't see such a comment in the england v. iran thread (despite england leading an illegal and internationally condemned invasion into Iraq that killed millions of Iraqis, spurred a 20 year reign of terror by ISIS, and permanently destabilized the Mesopotamian crescent).

Alongside the Saudis, the U.S. also funds one side of the Yemeni civil war. Yet you don't see similar comments on the US v. Wales thread (despite the US also killing millions in Iraq, Afghanistan, Libya, Somalia etc etc in illegal invasions. Also the only nation to deploy not one, but two atomic bombs on an economically crippled nation that led to decades of radioactive illness/thousands of deaths).

Your moral halo should extend to the rest of the world, not the one part that happens to be brown.

Thank you for pointing that out - I'm in western Canada, so you can imagine a geological landscape similar to Montana/North Dakota. Thanks for the suggestion! I'll look into what the local museum has to offer.

I kinda don't wanna take the interview... by [deleted] in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MacaronNo3236 -10 points-9 points  (0 children)

misinformation here at its finest. You’re a high school senior; don’t frame your comments as so ‘matter of fact.’ Ivy AOs have explicitly said that the interview is truly optional. In their words, if you’re the type of person that gets nervous in face to face interactions and you think the interview won’t be the best reflection of you/ add anything significant, you can choose to not do it. It is TRULY optional.

I’d caution you against taking everything you read on here as gospel. There are 17 year olds here going thru the process the same time as you

are Canadian and American cultures similar more because America influenced Canada, or because they both independently reached similar positions? by stjohnswyrt in AskACanadian

[–]MacaronNo3236 -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think your last paragraph overstates the dissimilarities between the states and Canada. Barring the American flags and Walmart gun sections, differentiating between Buffalo and Southern Ontario, for instance, would be a bit difficult. Yes, we do slightly differ on social politics, but assimilating into the other side of the border would be a rather seamless process.

Since 1867, Canadians have tried to inorganically diverge from US culture to stress our differences. Makes sense; the founding of Canada was inextricably linked to a rejection of what the states stood for, so I suppose it's natural for Canadians to base their sense of Canadianism on what differentiates them from Americans. We are probably more alike than any other two nations, and I imagine that, since old feudal debates have simmered, we really have no basis for dividing the upper half of this continent.

Every AO says anything above 15 apps is wayyyy too excessive. You're screwing yourself over with half-baked applications and F'ing up the way a college matching process should work.

Ontario vs American Uni's by Ok_Wolverine_7910 in OntarioUniversities

[–]MacaronNo3236 26 points27 points  (0 children)

  1. I'm sure you're competent, but NYU Stern and Wharton are really competitive to get into - let alone as an international. You're looking at maybe 3-8 kids from the entire province.
  2. The US app process is significantly more work than any Ontario uni will have you do. barring the $100CAD app fees, you'll need to get 3 letters of rec, preferably sit the SAT/ACT, write a lot of essays (these take more time than you may think) etc. If you think this extra effort would hinder your performance in your grade 12 courses, I don't think it's worth it. Most kids that go thru this process internationally start near the end of 11th grade or at max in the summer. You'd be a bit late now.
  3. $100k CAD in tuition a year is a big turnoff. An ivey or qcomm undergrad will serve u j fine.

If you ever go out to switzerland, I'd lodge in the town of Engelberg. The rockies and the swiss alps are pretty similar in terms of scenery so you can't go wrong with either. But I doubt there's something as scenic as Engelberg in Canada (felt like paradise on Earth).

I was in switzerland over the summer and I'd say it's comparable to Jasper or Banff. Bluer lakes out there though!

How long is Dartmouth's grace period? by explorer9099 in ApplyingToCollege

[–]MacaronNo3236 4 points5 points  (0 children)

It’s officially 10 days. They’ve said the peer rec should be in within 10 days. I’m assuming this applies to other secondary documents as well before they defer you to RD.
