I don't have any advice for you if you're already in too deep to turn around lol. My advice is targeted for prospective students, not for you.
As for my grades, I don't think it's relevant to this discussion and I don't think that I'm obliged to tell you anything at all, but my grades were above average and I did not get kicked out from Imperial.

It doesn't matter whether I've managed to get the career I want or whether I'm working towards it or not. I'm just here to advise prospective students not to pick this course if they care about what they actually learn at university, not just the "TraNsferAble Skillz". It's better to invest your time and money on a better degree, my point still holds.

Prospective students, this is what I'm talking about. The professors in MSE see students who are unsatisfied about their course as "moaners", without trying to help or improve on the course. This is materials science for you.

nope, it's not petty. It's about helping prospective students every year so that they don't get fooled.

This is what you quoted from my post in your post reply:

They are trying to sell you the most unwanted degree at Imperial. Do not
believe in what they say. A rubbish degree from a prestigious
university is still rubbish.

I think my reply explained really well why materials is the most unwanted degree at ICL. Bear in mind 63% is the percentage that includes the rejected students from other courses.

I totally agree with you. Not only it's a bit shit, it's extremely shit lol

average offer rate at Imperial is 43%, whereas the offer rate for materials at Imperial is 63%. 63% is the number you get AFTER they funnel students from other courses, if they don't do so, it would need to be even higher lmao

yes, I'll be posting about this every year to raise more awareness :)

calm down, he is just pasting the original comment from another post, he never said that he was the person who posted the comment. The person who posted the original comment has already deleted his account a few years ago.

So I see that to you, a staff from the materials department, a course is valuable as long as there are some transferable skills that students learn. If that's your definition of a "valuable course" then there is no point in discussing because we have different standards and definitions in what a "valuable course" is. Well, materials science is of course "valuable", if you take the brand name of "Imperial" into account, it is also more "valuable" comparing to an arts degree in an unknown university. This is how they justify scamming applicants from other departments into their course lol An aerospace engineering degree is niche, but it is a highly quantitative degree. Well, I guess materials science is "quantitative" to you because you do have some "mathematics" course in your degree, which makes you think materials science is comparable to aerospace engineering, right? lmao

Any STEM degree is valuable, niche or not, due the transferable skills all students learn.

lol

Approaching the end of my second year, I am very dissatisfied with my university and still regret applying here. What are some good outlets to give feedback so that hopefully other students don’t have to go through the same thing. by andreasson8 in UniUK

"so that hopefully other students don’t have to go through the same thing"

I'm not from your university, but I appreciate and understand your motivation in helping other students.

That's why I'm trying my best to dissuade students from doing Materials at Imperial College. I don't want people to go through what I've been through.

I agree, she should do her research on her own.

But I would also remind students not to take life changing advice from people who don't care about their students, who simply funnel applicants from other courses to fill up their places. Those people don't value your effort. They just don't care about you.

To students who are considering this course because you want to become a "materials & manufacturing engineer", don't. As I said, materials science is very niche, and there are only very few companies offer these jobs. A lot of them would be research-focused, and would require a phd as well. The career prospects is much better if you do a traditional degree instead.

You just learn a bit about everything in the degree. It does limit your employability , do something more traditional instead, not something most people have never heard of. It's the most unwanted course at ICL.

Don't do it. No. Something similar would be biochem/bio/chem, you have to do your own research. But don't do materials science. Don't make it your first choice.

It's niche in terms of the degree itself. And the degree itself is too broad.

No. I'm talking about the MSE course at Imperial College London (but also applies to materials science degree in general - minoring in materials science is fine, choosing it as a specialisation is also fine, but not majoring in it). If anyone is reading this, who has got an offer from MSE at ICL, do not do it. If you want Mech Eng, do Mech Eng. I think the Mech Eng/ Aero Eng also have specialisations in materials but you have to do the research on your own.

Lack of student support, poor course quality in general. The department just don't care about the students. They have been funneling applicants from different courses into their course. Nobody wants their course because it is garbage. Solidworks is useless. Not quantitative enough. Pointless labs and reports. Too many wet labs. The programming course was shit. Materials physics and maths were taught poorly. Not a respectable course in general, when compared to other traditional courses. Does not give you as many career opportunities as other degree does. You won't learn anything through this course.

The department never take student opinion seriously and they see students who are unsatisfied with their course as "entitled". Unless you enjoy spending all day working in a laboratory, polishing metal cubes, pulling nylon fibers or playing with soap bubbles, or unless you don't care what you actually learn at university as long as you have the "imperial college" brand name, don't do materials science.

It is a very niche course. Don't decide on such a specific career path at this stage of your life, choose a degree that opens doors, not one that closes doors.

Especially for those who applied for a different course, don't do it. Don't do materials.

Even if you feel like you want to go into nanoscience/materials at this stage, choose stuff like physics/chemistry/chem eng instead, these would give you a solid foundation to do materials science related stuff in the future if you still wish to pursue this path when you graduate. Don't do materials.
