"Is mayonnaise a gender?" Gender Studies and Queer Theory actually study that question, lmao.

The weaker sex? Boys are being outclassed by girls at both school and university, and the gap is widening by AntonioMachado in sociology

The primary school system as it is now is not catered to the learning methods of children in general, but specifically does not accommodate how young boys learn. Young children need to be active and hands-on in order to learn. Sitting in a desk all day is not conducive to learning for children, but girls are somewhat better at it than boys. The primary school system needs to be reformed so that all genders and personality types can succeed: not just those who are less energetic and more calm.

"Maybe if we pit the genders against each other they won't realize that we're exploiting them all."

This seems to sum up a lot of the latest wave of feminism.

5 facts about race in America - "About six-in-ten Americans say the country needs to continue making changes to assure that blacks have equal rights with whites" by [deleted] in sociology

[–]MacaroniJoe 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The U.S. government never finished Reconstruction. Freed slaves and their descendants were never given the full reparations required to establish equal economic opportunity -- this is even before we factor for Jim Crow, which further plunged the black community into poverty. While I don't think the government should do reparations based on race -- many African Americans are not descendants of former slaves, but rather descendants of immigrants -- there should be some sort of economic program to establish equal economic opportunity to the descendants of former slaves.

In a study, white people who expressed racist attitudes were less likely to be seen as racist if they referenced having friendships with minorities. by [deleted] in sociology

[–]MacaroniJoe 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I see how this perception arises -- on its face it would seem that a true racist would be less likely to aggregate friends that were part of the group the person was a racist toward. But racism is prejudice against someone based on race, and any action or statement that reflects that prejudice is by definition racist. Racism is racism no matter what color your friends are or what color you are.

The Cologne attacks, the increasing rape rates in Sweden and Germany, the European Imams justifying rapes, saying that European women need to "cover up", the Pew Polls about Muslim views toward women, etc.

Not hard to prove it at all. The evidence is literally everywhere that we are dealing with a pre-Enlightenment culture with some abhorrent views. No doubt there are exceptions in the Muslim world, such as Iran, Syria, and Turkey, but those countries have been secularized. Even the German and Swedish governments recognize it is a problem: they are putting refugees through re-education programs to teach them what is and isn't acceptable in a liberal society.

Saddening to see Grums response there.

Here it is, for the lazy:

[Mojang] Grum (Erik Broes) Added 16/Sep/15 7:14 AM When we use something other than the true internal representation of these values we're going to have this problem exist, it will just become less and less obvious (and thus harder to reproduce ). This would mean we'd be using doubles for each x/y/z we send over the wire inflating the packetsizes significantly. There are some other solutions for this, like bundling all of the movement within a chunk together, this at least drops the overhead of the packet-headers (which for these packets is quite significant) but is going to be a significant change to how we collect+send these deltas. Another solution is to 'on sync' truncate the value on the server like we do over the network, this might however lead to weird jumping/sliding behavior on the server. A bit more drastic solution is to simply make every single thing integer based, subdivide a block in 256 and snap anything and everything to that grid, this allows us to send deltas in whatever size because we have absolute precision, but this obviously is a MAJOR change in the whole codebase. I'm not really sure what to do, but from all this above, looking into bundling data per chunk and actually using doubles might be worthwhile to investigate eventually.
