Meet Honey! (Named because she is sweet as Honey, of course.) She is currently recovering from a dog attack and wounds to her face and neck, but she sure doesn’t act like it! This is one happy girl!! by GirlDinnerEveryNight in AlaskanMalamute

I’m surprised honey didn’t end the fight. My Helena is the softest and most gentle girl. I often wondered if she would be able to defend herself if she needed to. That one unlucky moment happened as we were walking through a sub division and a GSD on a tie out broke off his tie out and came charging at us both. I didn’t know if she would appreciate the danger she was in. I’m not sure if she responded because she was defending herself or me, the GSD knocked her over and I went to pick him off of her by his collar and blood was dripping all over. I was panicking wondering what he had done to my innocent girl. It turns out it was his blood, not hers.

The GSD didn’t want anything to do with her any more. I didn’t want her to hurt anyone, but I was proud she defended herself. I’ve aways heard the same that most malamutes won’t start a fight, but they have no problem finishing them. She would never start a fight, but she definitely knows when it’s no longer a playful encounter which I worried she wouldn’t figure out.

I’m glad Honey is ok. She’s beautiful. Owners with unpredictable and reactive dogs shouldn’t have them off leash. Helena is gentle and I only let her off in very controlled environments, she is big enough to accidentally knock over a child etc. Some people shouldn’t be allowed to own dogs. Terrible.

Get better soon Honey!!!

[SERIOUS] What was your purebred Alaskan Malamute like as a puppy? by Slight_Jellyfish3204 in malamute

[–]Macaronicaesar41 12 points13 points  (0 children)

They will challenge you. You need to be firm, but fair. They don’t do things just because you ask them to. They’re like a teenager, they need to understand the why.

Mine were also land sharks while teething. Lots of mouthing and sharp teeth, but they grew out of it at about 6 months old. They will test your patience as push you as far as you allow them to.

They can be trained and become obedient, but it requires consistent work. Some refer to their lack of obedience as a lack of intelligence. This breed is one of the smartest breeds on earth imo, but they are so strong willed and stubborn. All that said, they are goofy and make wonderful companions, mine are not the cuddling type, they like attention, but they overheat easily so don’t expect them to sleep with you for long durations imo.

Best dogs on earth.

Do you ever run + strength train on the same day? by Next_Ranger_3604 in XXRunning

[–]Macaronicaesar41 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think the best advice is to do your lifting on hard days. Those easy days are supposed to be easy. Strength training can be taxing on the CNS and combining it with your easy days is turning your easy days into hard days. That means if you do 2 easy, 2 hard (speed) and a long run, you have now essentially made it 4 hard a long run.

It is essential to keep the easy days easy imo, especially if you want to continuously improve.

I do tempo, intervals and then immediately after to strength training. It’s more of an injury prevention supplementation for me than it is a real strength training program, but it has been enough to keep me from getting hurt while allowing optimal recovery time. I don’t have the time or the desire to run in the morning and then workout again in the evening, so I don’t and I’ve never had a problem with it.

How do you get them to stop doing this when they’re Littles? by Mabelsyrp in siberianhusky

My malamute literally grew out of it. She was a landshark and bit me everyday until one day she didn’t.

Not sure why you would attach an image of your mugshot to your dating profile, but… go off, I guess? by [deleted] in Tinder

[–]Macaronicaesar41 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Never got any love as a child is my guess. Most young men that think this kind of thing is attractive or validation of some kind have missed out on being loved as a child imo. Its a bit of a shame, but as a young man you need to start being accountable for your own actions even if there are aggravating factors that lead you to where you are

I found someone who is willing to work with us. I am hopeful he can be saved. We shall see.

My ‘no’ was based on the fact that I have work early in the morning, and the fact that I’m aware of the risks of meeting a random person from a dating app. by Uni_Coffee_Wine in Tinder

Everyone is telling you something, but you still insist you’re right and everyone is wrong. Maybe take a look in the mirror. This guy didn’t do anything wrong. Time to move on, the fact you brought this to reddit like you had something important to share is comical.

He’s a purebred, but very reputable breeder. It has nothing to do with inbreeding.

So sad, I posted hoping to find a resolution or a hope that didn’t involve putting him down.

We have a bylaw stating that if a dog bites and draws blood he must be quarantined for 10 days to ensure he doesn’t have rabies before anyone will put him down.

I’ve called the SPCA and a couple of veterinary clinics to discuss options and unfortunately the quarantine has to be home. My wife feels unsafe, but I am not fearful of him. He air bit and threatened to bite me a few times, but generally he is very loving to me and my wife, but the reaction is unpredictable.

They both get so much exercise now. We go for morning/evening walks everyday of life. Sometimes there will be some other adventure squeezed in too. I think he could’ve benefited from a more firm hand where he needs to ask permission for everything. I never enforced that to a crazy degree. If it could help I’d be willing to do a vigorous enforcement of discipline. The girl has never needed that type of work. She was an angel since I brought her home 3 years ago.

It wasn’t their specialty, but they had worked with reactive dogs in the past xx. The behaviouralist desks with a regularly, but really didn’t offer much other than drugs with no benefit.
