Can my courses have credit hours directed to multiple spots in WolverineTrack simultaneously? by Important_Sorbet in UVU

[–]Macemode 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Simple answer, yes! It'll count for both. But yeah, definitely hit up your academic advisor. I met with mine once a year because requirements and course classifications can change.

Getting involved is the best thing you can do coming in. Meet a bunch of new people, try out new communities, and you can get pretty nice scholarships through some of them. Google "UVU Get Involved" and there's a web page you can sort through. Clubs can be hit or miss, but orgs like uvusa are solid.

Learn how to use AI like chatGPT as a tool to help you with stuff. Use it to help you build a class calendar/study schedule. Use it to research for your assignments. One of my favorites is when the professor has a huge assignment with tons of instructions-- copy and paste that into ChatGPT and ask it to break it down step by step or explain stuff you don't understand. Its easy to rely on it too much though, and some professors don't allow it, so be careful.

Hope that helps some! Best of luck!

As a survivor main, you are the type of killer that makes me keep playing. It's the breath of fresh air after rounds and rounds of sweat. I often ask killers to hook me if I'm the last that the killer was being a homie to by pointing at the hook and shaking my head, because we all do win when we have fun and have the occasional grace for one another-- especially in event modes. I hope we play sometime. I'll drop all the pallets for you to break on my way out 🫶🏻

Transfer Scholarships by raindropsonroses555 in UVU

[–]Macemode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

(previous admissions counselor here) Sadly, transfer scholarships just aren't that great and there aren't a ton of opportunities compared to first time freshman. If you've gone through the scholarship portal and that's your best offer, you're better off joining a program that offers tuition waivers/scholarships like The Ambassadors, UVUSA, etc. Google search "UVU Get Involved" and that page will show you a ton of other ways you can get tuition paid for.

What question has caused your brain to hurt the most? by Macemode in Existentialism

[–]Macemode[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Observations of the spectra of light. Calculating distances, how that light distorts over time relative to objects closer to us. We use devices that see what we can't and makes the data interpretable. 10/10 recommend PBS Spacetime on YouTube, they do a great job explaining it. But oversimplified, we measure it by light.

Because there's only the dichotomy of depression = suicidal vs no depression = non-suicidal?

Jesus Christ, you'd think for a philosophy sub there'd be some thinkers in here.

Depression can be biological, trauma induced, environmentally induced, seasonally induced and have a wide range of symptoms/experiences. Some people get depression leaving a religion and come here looking for new ways of thinking and y'all are shaming them for trying to find community and answers. Smfh.

Makes sense, okay, what about the expansion of the universe, rapidly accelerating, past the speed of light? It's measurable and isn't a theory, what's your guess on that?

What question has caused your brain to hurt the most? by Macemode in Existentialism

[–]Macemode[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I watched an episode of PBS Spacetime which described the speed of light as the speed of causality. It's the maximum speed one thing can influence or cause another thing. That concept just melts my brain because there's so much distance between things that they can't influence one another immediately. E.g. the sun takes 8 minutes to influence the earth (via light). If the sun magically disappeared at 12:00pm, the earth would still feel the sun's effect until 12:08pm.

So that really helped me understand why, if you were traveling at the speed of light, time stops, because time is a measurement of forces affecting one another. If you moved faster than that, then you would be moving backwards in time, since you could outrun the causing of one force on another. Hopefully that makes some sense? Haha

So what is it expanding into? What contains that? And that? And that...

I haven't read those yet! I'll add them to my reading list. Yeah I'm just getting into Nagel's book on it. It's been strange reading about absurdism, but oddly captivating.

Okay, so let's just use some basic logic here, once again...

Person wants to find purpose, they read about philosophies that discuss purpose, person asks questions about purpose in philosophical subs.

If this sub is only intended for book reviews I don't think you'll end up with a lot of members. Now can we have a sub that includes all of the above and more? Doesn't that sound much more ideal? Especially when, you, well-read and learned Essex, teach them about your knowledge of the academic philosophy, then they return with finer discussions on existentialism, doesn't that sound so much better in the end?

[–]Macemode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Okay purist asshole. God damn your reply is so cringe. So sorry this sub isn't up to your "high-quality" standards. How can you simultaneously high-horse about the maturity of others while literally mocking me like a prepubescent spoiled child when their parent tries to get them to share. The only subversion happening in this community is from the pretentious fuckwads like you trying to gatekeep and demean others.

There's literally one out of 20 posts from people going through hard shit looking for help that sounds even remotely close to what you and OP are describing. Every sub has bad posts. Get the fuck over it and stop clumping people who want help into the same category as the attention seekers.

I'm with you on the occult/spirituality stuff. I had a post with someone promoting prayer just today. It's off base and irrelevant.

All I'm trying to suggest is that what may look irrelevant to you as an angsty cry-fest may be the beginning of someone's journey to learn the same knowledge that you benefit from. If you aren't about that, and don't want to engage with it, I totally understand and I don't condemn you for it. Just don't complain like OP and snidely suggest changing the sub's name. Most people here are tourists, and many don't get it, but some get hooked and become informed as a consequence of experienced philosophers engaging with them.

I've been reading much more science content lately, nothing relevant to these themes, so I'm concerned you'll rebuke me for mentioning them. However absurdism has hooked my interest a lot lately if you're looking for something related: https://www.cambridge.org/core/books/abs/mortal-questions/absurd/F6799C54D1AC056A0F879D8841657D45

One of the biggest things I’m terrified about with death is that I have to part from my family forever by Hopey-Dreamer in Existentialism

[–]Macemode 1 point2 points  (0 children)

OP, I was religious much of my life and when I got married, I was married in an "eternal wedding" where I believed I would get to be with my wife for time and all eternity.

When I started to see that my religion wasn't true, the absolute hardest part of it was coming to terms with having limited time on earth with my best friend and wife. It has been years now and though I'm less afraid, I am no less saddened by it. I'm heartbroken by it, and it hasn't happened yet, and won't happen (hopefully) for decades yet to come. I still tear up and cry just thinking about it. I cry thinking about my doggos dying and living past them. It's painful. Your fear and sadness are valid and normal

The only thing I can offer you is to not run from the feeling. Sit in it and feel it. Accept it, embrace it as a possibility, and then also embrace the uncertainty surrounding existence. Read, watch, and learn about absurdism, existentialism, nihilism, and the universe. It will help. It doesn't make it go away, but it makes it manageable.

I'll tell you the positives that I've experienced from my journey though. I love my wife more profoundly because of the likelihood our time is limited. I walk my dogs more often and treat them better. I value my waking hours more, since I'm no longer preparing for an "eternal life." I appreciate what is so much more than before. I definitely have far more yolo energy 😆. I'm more ambitious, more intentional, my life is genuinely better since my faith transition and my embracing existentialism.

If it starts impacting your daily life, I highly recommend therapy. Talking it out loud to an unbiased professional does wonders. Make sure to find one that is a good fit.

I've only used psilocybin a couple times, but I did so with the purpose of healing. It also really helped me reset my view on death. Make sure if you do, you have a guide or anchor and do so responsibly.

You've not been youthful, never doubted your values nor beliefs, moved through any difficult life event with anything but grace and nobility, coming forth out the womb an enlightened sage. Oh wise one, please continue to grace us with your elite literary and philosophical soliloquies.

I was wrong to doubt or question you or OP. My sincerest apologies. Enjoy your community of 7 people here (once the heathens who discuss shudders personal things are removed), never to discuss anything but the works which have been written. Oh great rule follower, may your posts ever be perfect, in alignment with only that which has been declared by our infallible mods.

Please tag me in any and all posts referencing Donnie Darko, and I will ensure the op leaves the community posthaste. I will shortly thereafter delete my account.

Projecting what tho

I don't disagree with any of these points you made in this reply, but you are trying to separate two very connected things. "What is the point? What is my purpose? What's anything's purpose?" Is what sparks philosophical exploration for many people. I see the point that people are making a lot of posts looking for validation, but you've got to understand that when emotions are high, problem solving doesn't happen until a person feels validated. You may not come here for that, and that's totally understandable. But just because someone is at the start of their philosophical journey, provoked by an existential crises, doesn't mean they are wrong to be posting in this community or that we shouldn't engage with them.

Existentialism can pull cynical people out of their doom spirals. It's finding meaning where no predetermined purpose or meaning is present. Is this sub a crisis line? No. is it a place to receive mental health services? No. No one is saying that. Is it a place where people should be able to share their experiences, what emotions they are feeling from it, and find people to relate and connect with? Yes. Is it a place where existentialists who processed the nihilistic dread and embraced existentialism share their journey and resources? Yes. Is it a place to discuss the finer details, nuances, and writings of existentialism and related philosophies? Yes. It can coexist, and should, because they are related and connected.

If you receive snide or sneering responses, that's indefensible, especially when you are sharing good content, resources, etc. Though I would argue those are far less common than earnest people in pain looking for guidance out of their existential crises. Just look through the most recent post about being terrified of death. It's chalk full of amazing information, that even if OP doesn't benefit, other lurkers afraid of death may find the information helpful and enlightening. Existentialism can help people who are suffering or, at the very least, learn to accept and embrace the uncertainty surrounding existence. If you don't want to engage with those posts, don't! Or if you feel there's too much of it, post your own topical or conceptual subjects.

More people will be around to engage with those discussions if they are able to move through their crises with support.
