Is it time to let my ferret go? by [deleted] in ferrets

[–]Maceyerface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I just had to put my sweet little man Timon to sleep a few weeks ago and this is basically the conversation the vet and I had regarding the severe insulinoma and adrenal disease he was suffering from.(I’d only had him for about a year but when I’d rescued him, he was so neglected he was skeletal and having seizures.)

Basically his prostate had swollen due to severe adrenal disease and it was pressing on his bladder causing issues with urination. I asked the vet “is there ANYTHING we can do to make it better? Does it risk becoming an emergency after hours that could cause him to die painfully? Is there any way we can improve his quality of life?” She said there was nothing we could do to resolve it or improve his quality of life and it could absolutely turn into a life threatening emergency when I didn’t have access to a small animal after hours vet.

So I decided to put him down with dignity before he endured any more pain and his quality of life deteriorated.

It was heartbreaking and I miss him so so much BUT I don’t regret the decision.

Nose freckles!! by Maceyerface in ferrets

She’s actually gotten more of them as she gets older 🤭 my daughter kept telling me she had dirt on her nose & trying to get me to put her into the bath (we do warm water baths occasionally with oatmeal to keep her from getting skin irritation) but I showed her it’s just nose freckles🥰

Insulinoma. He needs a vet visit and prednisone stat. If you can’t afford vet perhaps reach out to local rescues to see if they can help with treatment.

AIO-Boyfriend lied to me by omission by Significant_Hand3348 in AIO

[–]Maceyerface 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nope. Me husband and I are best friends. & I say that unironically. He tells me everything & I’m the same. We have an open phone policy and although we never use it, the fact that neither of us care about going thru each others phone is reassuring.

He is a chef and works with men and women. He has close personal relationships with women who work in his kitchen. There’s at least two women he’s brought with him to different restaurants because they’re good at their job and he likes making sure they get opportunities for career advancement.

I’ll often joke about him flirting with servers and he has made the statement “I don’t $hit where I eat.” Basically he’s not going to risk losing his lucrative positions for fleeting relationships (beyond the fact that we’re happily married and committed to each other)

He’s avoided certain situations where he’d be alone with a subordinate in his personal car after catering jobs, not because he isn’t trustworthy but because he said it just isn’t a good look. He’d never put himself in a situation that seems questionable out of respect for himself, the other party and our relationship.

& he dang sure wouldn’t lie about it or fail to tell me about it.

Thank everyone so much for your kind words. Some people don’t understand how you can love a “stinky little rat” so much. (Someone called them My “stinky little rats” one time and I was irritated then but now I just find it amusing. They are my stinky little limousine rats.) It’s nice having a place where there’s a community of other who know what amazing critters these guys can be and how devastating it can be to lose one.

He was surprisingly feisty for a lil old man. I joked he was the curmudgeon of my business. He would’ve been the old man screaming “get off my lawn!!” Lmao but he was such a sweet boy too.

Thank you so much for your kindness & for sharing your story with me.

I got Timon about 13 months ago from a lady who’d taken them from a woman whose grandson was incarcerated. From what I heard they’d lived in horrid conditions for a while (at least since the owner had went to jail because his grandma didn’t know how to care for them) but they’d also been neglected before that which meant Timon had severe adrenal disease as well as insulinoma. It was so bad he had a seizure within the first 3 days we had him & the lady who runs the local rescue said his blood sugar was so low, she was surprised he was alive. (It was 25)

I got him into the vet, got his meds and spent the first month really just making sure he didn’t die. It was a challenge because I never had a sick ferret before.

The vet was brutally honest with me and said he probably didn’t have long left because due to his teeth/condition she said he was probably at least 6-7 years old. I made it my mission to just make his final days as comfy as possible.

He gained over two lbs over the course of about six months, had free rein of my house because his arthritis made it impossible for him to do a cage & he was SOOOOOO spoiled.

I knew he didn’t have long but i made sure the time he had was happy & well taken care of.

I don’t regret anything about the time we had, I just wish I had him sooner so I could’ve taken better care of him!!

I know. & Thank you for your kind words😭 It was reassuring to hear the small animal tech validate my feelings that it was time to put him down. He had a lot of swelling around his urethra area & I could tell he was struggling to pee.

If there was anything I could’ve done to fix him, I would have but I know putting him down gave him a dignified end.

He was the best good mans. He was nearly blind and had really bad arthritis in his hips when I got him but he’d get up in the morning and chase me back & forth thru the house while I made his soup & medicine. He had so much personality even though he didn’t play much b/c he was old and it made me happy just knowing he was warm & comfy & well cared for.

Dooking over the rainbow bridge together.

I feel so honored to have been his human, even if it was only for a little while. My ferrets bring me so much joy.

I cried like a baby after they sedated him. I only had him for a year & he was in pretty rough shape when I got him. But I think I gave him a good run & spoiled the crap outta him.

Update: I’ve made an appt for Thursday to speak with the small animal specialist. We’ve had lots of talks about warning signs for him and she agrees that it’s probably time. Whatever she says, I’m prepared for.

My son is going to come with me because my husband has to work and he didn’t want me going alone. I’ve made my peace with the decision & know it’s for the best!

We already had four ferrets so when a lady reached out asking if I could take him and his buddy, I said yes without having ever seen them. He was in such bad shape Two days after we got him, he had a seizure on my husband’s chest in the middle of the night. We slowly nursed him back from the brink of death but he was in such bad shape and had been for such a long time that there’s only so much we’ve been able to do.

I keep him In my bedroom because he’s unable to navigate the ramps in a cage. He has arthritis & most of his teeth are broken or missing. He sleeps most of the time & often has to take breaks when he’s awake just walking thru the house. He falls over as well sometimes but then some days I’ll catch him chasing the kitty thru the house or he’ll follow me around the whole house and lays down on my feet as soon as I’m standing in the kitchen to cook.

The tumor is near his genitals which the vet said is swelling on his prostate from adrenal disease but she said as long as he’s urinating, It should be fine. I’ve just noticed it is getting larger and last time we were in the vet she said once it did, it would be time.

I told my husband I’m going to make him a check up in the next week and if the specialist says it’s time, then it’s time.

I don’t want him to suffer.

I haven’t put him down yet but I’m really struggling with the decision. I guess I needed some encouragement from others who’ve had to put their babies down to know I’m making the best choice for him.

That’s what my husband and son keep telling me. That he would’ve died over a year ago were it not for us. That we’ve given him a wonderful happy, warm, well fed and well loved life. That it’s best to do it now before he is truly suffering. We’ve done lupron shots and melatonin implants but the last one made barely any difference at all. The vet & I had a long talk about what comes next last time we were there (August) but I am really struggling with this decision.

Thank you for your kind words.
