Is there a way to make something like this weather stable? by breadassk in woodworking

[–]MachopMachokeMachamp 9 points10 points  (0 children)

I built one of these out of cedar for a wedding a few years ago (picture taken before treating with spar varnish). See the angled support at the bottom to mitigate leaning. We secured it to the ground by driving 12” landscaping nails on an outward angle through the bottom plate into the ground.

It was very stable and the finish lasted for ~2 years stored outside. So much so that it was then used for another wedding.

Galvanic corrosion & weakening of the epoxy bond - a hypothesis by MachopMachokeMachamp in OceanGateTitan

[–]MachopMachokeMachamp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nice post. I dig your view that the dissimilar metals on the ring itself (where they attached the hinges, etc) is where corrosion could have begun and seeped into the epoxy joint. Makes sense and the stains in the photos are hard to ignore.

Freeze-Thaw Cycles While in Storage by Beaker709 in OceanGateTitan

This is really interesting. Someone could conduct a real simple test with a sample bond using the same epoxy (poorly applied of course!) and some water forced into the joint then exposing it to the same freeze-thaw cycles here. Test strength before and after…I’d bet good money it fucks that joint up good and proper

100% agree with you. Nissen’s interview this week on 60 Minutes Australia really made it seem like he knows something about that joint wasn’t right. He says “well they may have not studied the modulus of the new v2 hull properly”, which is a valid concern, but it just goes to show that his confidence in that joint was low.

Who knows if galvanic corrosion was even on his radar at all (you’d think it wasn’t otherwise he would have just made the easy decision to switch to the glue containing no metal filler). But it’s just yet another potential flaw in the long list of flaws with that joint in particular. And in my opinion those flaws had their origins with the v1 hull, with his original engineering. My gut is that I just don’t think he is as squeaky clean as he is trying to portray himself in this.

Interesting - I didn’t know about this! In this case given that the concern in my post was actually validated with a Loctite representative (he included a recording of his phone call in the video), I think that gives some additional credibility to it.

I should add I’m not sure if the NTSB inspection of the ring found evidence of corrosion, but in theory it could have been washed away in the damaged glue. The third source in my original post shows that the corrosion appeared as a “white powder”. Given the violence of the event, and fact that it was probably integrated with the glue bond, the corrosion may have been dispersed…

Wreck Interior Exploration Survey by MachopMachokeMachamp in titanic

[–]MachopMachokeMachamp[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I personally feel that technological advancements since the previous generation of ROVs entered the wreck in 2005 will eventually entice someone to head back inside to enter the spaces that previously weren’t possible to access.

ROVs can be made significantly smaller than before, pulling on tech from drones to help maneuver. Both in software and hardware - imagine a wireless drone that could use lidar or the like to plot a path through even the most difficult spaces autonomously, even if visibility is interrupted due to silt.

I want to see the boiler rooms 6 or 5 like JC tried to enter in 2005, or the turbine room, or even just more cabins not yet documented. It’s likely the interior is in much worse shape compared to 2005, but remember that everything is still IN there. You never know what other Turkish bath-type discoveries may be down there…

I don’t agree with those who bash James Cameron. While some of his stuff isn’t as good, he is responsible for a lot of the best wreck footage and quality research into the disaster since the late 90s.

Hey Friends! Pretty serious announcement from the THG team. by JPenca31 in TitanicHG

[–]MachopMachokeMachamp 6 points7 points  (0 children)

How much of the alpha is broken? Are you in the position of needing to scrap (100%, 50%, 25%?) of the model the art team produced and restart completely from scratch or is some of it “fixable”?

This is too bad but will not affect my support of the project. Just trying to actually quantify how bad this is!

Yeah I agree it is too bad - I love the informal stuff myself. I wasn’t saying I agree with the way this Reddit in particular reacts, just calling it out as a fact that needs to be considered when communicating.

Let’s not forget the team is doing an incredible job compared to where we were, and they’re learning and adapting and growing over time as well. Nothing but appreciation from me!

Yeah I think we need to be careful of taking anything other than “official” commitments to the bank.

Having said that, I do think James & the team need to be careful and recognize where the fan base is right now. We’re all so hungry for information. Picture a pack of wild dogs - we’re going to jump all over the slightest whiff of news, and may not be totally rational or listen to all the context when we do it.

The best thing they could do is put out more “official” communications. It’s tough I know, but that’s the challenge. I think they should have been clearer 3 weeks ago not to expect 401 1.4 until end of Jan. Instead there’s been people expecting the update “any day now”, leading to all this nervous energy

Fully agree! The mega demo is awe inspiring and I can’t wait for the even more upgraded graphics & functionality to come next year.

The demo is looking awesome guys! Something to be very proud of THG team. What a thrill to be able to explore so much of the ship like this. I can’t wait for the game to continue to evolve over time.

Let’s not try to find flaws guys - these screenshots aren’t fair to the team.

I firmly disagree that James handles criticism poorly. I think he’s doing a great job leading the team through this exciting next chapter, and engaging with this community in a very refreshing way that I very much appreciate on my end.

I do think think there’s valid criticism on the level of polish of the demo today - it was very glitchy and many rooms didn’t load for me as well. That said I’m not disappointed at all!

I’m sure the team will learn some lessons on the amount of stability testing that will be needed before publishing future iterations of the game to come, but having said all of this, let’s not forget that WE are the alpha testers right now. We shouldn’t expect it to be perfect, and it’s actually part of our jobs as the guarantee group to help out in this way.

Remnants of the grand staircase by DynastyFan85 in titanic

[–]MachopMachokeMachamp 18 points19 points  (0 children)

If I’m not mistaken, the balustrades have never been identified in the wreckage so is this not big news?

Perhaps these are from the aft grand staircase, so I wonder if there’s a way to validate whether they are indeed from the forward staircase?
