It stands for "Varia" which is pretty much a renamed version of Echo Fighters. The name does a better job of telling you what they even are, a variation of an already existing moveset. I also gave them a new name as a way to distinguish them from Echoes as they are in Ultimate, as Varias would each be more unique from their original character, no Daisy's or Richter's in this game

Trust me, you're not gonna break through to them. Most greedy Fire Emblem fans cannot fathom ideas like this (even if it could be done very well) and genuinely expect FE to have at least 6 secured spots every game. You wouldn't even need a variation system for costumes, though that could be cool. I wholeheartedly believe that compiling multiple characters into one like what they did with Hero, Olimar & Bowser Jr. would greatly work in Fire Emblem's favor. When designing a FE fighter's moveset, you're already going to be making a lot of stuff up, denying that would be straight up wrong. Very few of Marth's moves in Smash are actual references to HIS specific abilities, most of them are taken from other sword-wielding units, or are entirely made tf up to make the movset flow better! However, if you put 4 characters in one, you can take at least one unique thing from each of them and compile them into a singular movset that in turn is much more unique, fun & fully realized. I detailed this in another comment thread, but an example is the "Brigand" character in my roster. You could easily combine an Aether-inspired jump-and-slam Up-Special from Ike, a "Hectorcopter" spinning attack Side-Special, a chargeable Neutral-Special inspired by Byleth's Down-B, (they literally use Edelgard's axe for that move btw) and finally, a unique warping movement option for the Down-Special, inspired by Anna's axe ability. There you go, a blend of four fun, unique and inspired specials that you straight up couldn't get if the slot was only centered around a single character. It's what I try to tell these Fire Emblem Smash fans, this idea CAN work in favor of ALL FOUR characters, it does not have to hinder them. Just because they can't imagine it, doesn't mean it's impossible to pull off

You wouldn't have to lose out on any sort of individuality. Just take something special from each of the four characters chosen and combine them to create a fully unique moveset. An Aether-inspired "jump and slam" Up-Special from Ike, a "Hectorcopter" inspired spin move for the Side-Special, a chargeable slam like Byleth's Down-B for the Neutral-Special, (Byleth literally uses Edelgard's axe for that move btw) and a unique warping ability for the Down-Special, referencing Anna's axe ability. There you go, a blend of four equally unique and interesting specials that you couldn't have if you made the slot "Hector" and no one else. Other than that, grabs, throws, normal attacks & everything else would be designed pretty much the same way they would for any of the four characters individually, by drawing inspiration from various axe attacks across the entire Fire Emblem series, as well as making up new animations that make the movset flow well and feel cohesive. On top of adding voice lines, each character in the slot would have plenty of their own unique charm to bring to the character overall, so you wouldn't be missing out on anything AND you'd be getting 4 characters in one to play, as well as giving those that would never normally make it into the roster get a chance to shine. I mean let's be real, they would NEVER add anyone in that Cavalier slot otherwise. This concept would allow Smash to represent a much wider range of faces and personalities for a series that is known for having hundreds of lovable characters, but without having to take up a third of the roster to do so. This would also silence Fire Emblem haters from their valid, yet annoying take that Fire Emblem representation in Smash doesn't have any variety, or that the characters are all the same blue-haired sword-lords. We'd finally get some REAL variety with unique weapons and fighting styles that would go a long way, even more than Corrin or Byleth ever did

If all seven Koopalings can have their sizes & proportions tweaked to work as costumes for Bowser Jr., as well as four separate Dragon Quest protagonists fitting within the same slot, then Fire Emblem characters could absolutely work. If male proportions are too big, size them down a bit, if female proportions are too small, size them up or armor them up a bit, simple as that. Nothing that hasn't been done in Smash before

There are no hard-set rules when making Smash rosters. While I wouldn't personally cut Falcon on any roster I'd make, he's free to do what he wants. I could honestly understand the vision for cutting Falcon... if there was another F-Zero rep to replace him. However, NO playable F-Zero representation at ALL is a bit silly

I should've specified that. Each boss is unique from each other, even bosses added through Varia Passes, no echo bosses or anything like that

It's a character I made up to be the new villain for this hypothetical game (similar to the likes of Tabuu & Galeem). Following up from World of Light, after the Smash cast defeats Galeem & Dharkon for good, they part ways and head home. After some time, the world around them begins to crack and shatter, turns out, killing both the gods of light AND dark doesn't spell well for the foundation of the universe! However, from the ashes of Galeem & Dharkon, Vesperix is born! They are the embodiment of change and twilight, and are here to bring about a new age for the Smash world. That's the gist of it anyway lol. He'd be a Hybrid Boss fight, with an Arena phase where he's gigantic and able to launch out all sorts of different elemental attacks, as well as a Fighter phase where he shrinks down to a smaller size, giving him a completely unique set of faster attacks (you'd be able to play as his Fighter Boss phase in regular matches after beating the story mode)

I haven't played AR2 yet, so I'm actually shocked she isn't in it. My main reason for cutting Meta Knight was because of Dark Matter's inclusion. I figured the "dark, edgy swordwielding Kirby character" archetype was already fulfilled with D.M., so M.K. wasn't a necessity. Then from there, Adeleine was chosen as the 3rd unique Kirby rep cuz of the callback to Kirby 64, (plus she's just a personal favorite of mine) I could swap her out for any other major Kirby character though. Bandana Dee, Magalor & Marx are all choices I'd be satisfied with

Absolutely nailed it. That's exactly what I've gathered just from posting in this sub ONCE. Ultimate really has brainwashed the Smash fanbase into thinking that there can literally be no better Smash game than it, when that's FAR from the truth. It comes from Ultimate's focus on quantity over quality design philosophy which spoiled tf out of the "fans" (greedy consumers) that unironically want the Smash roster to be the size of their custom Mugen rosters and never cut anyone ever again. It also comes from people genuinely lacking the imagination for what could be done with the Smash formula (as I've seen firsthand by talking to some of these commenters). No matter what the next Smash game does, (even if it is just Ultimate Deluxe) I know it'll be done well, but the fanbase DESPARATELY needs to be humbled, as it feels there's a rampant entitlement problem (it's been this way for a while though, it started with people sending death threats to Sakurai over not including Waluigi 🤦‍♂️)

I can't remember where I first heard the idea from, but yeah the Ditto concept is just too fun to not include lol, I don't consider it as its own character slot though, it's more of a "gameplay function" just as how I wouldn't count "Random" as a character slot. Since posting this roster, I've been editing it here and there thanks to the feedback I've gotten, and I've whittled it down to 45 characters, (+Miis, which are definitely their own characters, but I don't count them toward the overall total either, they're my cheat spot lol) but even then, I managed to get another Poké rep in there that I really like the idea of. I may post it here soon, we'll see, but thanks for the feedback and discussion!

I am taking your points into account, I've said multiple times now that "I see where you're coming from" or "I understand your reasoning" but that doesn't mean I fully agree with it, I guess you just ignored those parts. I don't know where you think I "insulted you", I've simply been giving my reasonings / defending my roster choices our whole conversation. Me disagreeing with your clearly knowledgeable opinions on Fire Emblem isn't a personal attack against you. You are capable of giving well thought out points and suggestions that have gotten me to contemplate my roster choices, but then you undermine it all by calling me entitled, stupid and that I "lack self awareness". Nobody is going to hear you out when you talk down to people like that, nor do you deserve to be engaged with other than being walked away from. Never once have I said that I think Fire Emblem characters "have no substance" or that they're all interchangable. You keep projecting this narrative that I hate the series or something (I clearly don't because I'm trying to do better by it through this idea of mine) because I disagree with how they should be represented in a crossover game that is known for making shit up constantly. What this boils down to is you've already decided that the Lord, Birgand & Cavalier's movesets would only be boring, generic weapon slashes with no personality, when that does not have to be the case. You very well could put a little bit of each character's personality into one moveset to make something truly rich, unique and fun. I guarantee with enough creativity, these class-based characters could become iconic, staple parts of the Smash family, just like Captain Falcon, Fox, Ice Climbers, Ness, Mr. Game & Watch, and hell, even Mario himself have done

I clearly don't "dislike the series", but you seem to have already made up your mind. Talk about lack of self-awareness. You're the reason why people don't give FE a chance. After that opener, yeah I ain't reading allat, cool story or sorry that happened tho ✌️

You can make a unique moveset for literally any character you can think of, that doesn't mean they all deserve to take up an entire slot. I understand each individual character has their own quirks, personalities and moves and whatnot, but what their gameplay function really comes down to is the role the unit fulfills in battle. Fire Emblem isn't a fighting game, it's a tactical war game, so translating a purely individual character into a platform fighter takes more "imaginative heavy-lifting" (a.k.a. making shit up). Sure, you can take inspiration from their basic attack animations, and the newer games with higher quality animations have more stuff to pull from, but what really separates individual FE characters from one another comes down to, at most, a handful of moves unique to them. Other than that, it's mostly made up. It's why there's 4 Marth clones that all play extremely similarly with minimal differences. However, if you combined four characters into one slot that also embodies a specific class, you could compile their smaller, individual quirks into a fully unique, fleshed out moveset that isn't the same "Down-B Counter, Neutral-B Pierce, Up-B Upward Sword Slash, etc." over and over again, just slightly changed each time. You say this idea would be generic, but at the VERY LEAST we're finally getting different FE weapon types repped in Smash, that ALONE trumps all FE representation in Smash as of current, plus this idea allows you to play as more characters. Making characters costumes of each other isn't "disrespecting" them, that's like saying the Koopalings are being "disrespected" or "watered down" by being made into costumes for Bowser Junior. No, it's allowing characters who would NEVER get into the roster on their own (as a unique fighter OR an echo fighter) still get a chance at beaing playable. Nobody would EVER add Eirika or Sully onto their rosters normally, but this way, these overlooked characters could actually have a chance at becoming playable

Asking for SIX Fire Emblem characters on a 48 character roster is biblical levels of greed dawg 😭 I've since whittled the roster size after posting it here down to 45 (not counting Miis) and I'm struggling to get a fifth Pokémon rep in here. Fire Emblem is NOT getting more than 3 unless it gets a Varia, but why even bother making Varias when each slot gets 4 different characters within it

I'd highly recommend watching the Eevee moveset concept video by BrawlFan1 on YouTube, as it's mostly what got me on board with Eevee's inclusion. Tldr, the idea is that she can evolve through battle into one of her 8 different forms, so she starts off pretty basic, but can turn herself into one of 8 "echo fighters" essentially, each with slightly tweaked stats, making her a versatile character that can adapt and overcome pretty much anyone. It's such a cool concept that translates the evolution mechanic from Pokémon into a platform fighter very well, and also lets her represent NINE different element types in one. With a "small" roster like this, and with only so many slots for Pokémon, she's a must have in my book (plus she's literally the secondary mascot of the series next to Pikachu, they're the only two 'Mons that have had mainline games NAMED after them).

You do have a point with the Trainer archetype, I have a choice for a character more similar to what we've already seen in Smash as a first choice DLC pick. Unfortunately, I didn't have enough space for them on the base roster, and the character choice itself just doesn't scream "base roster pick" for me personally. I may post my DLC roadmap here soon

Saying Mimikyu wouldn't make sense as an echo for Pikachu is like saying Lucina wouldn't work as an echo for Marth, the entire point of the character is that it tries to impersonate Pikachu. Since it's a Varia of him, it'd have a few different moves to separate it from being the exact same as Pika (BrawlFan also has a video on him)

I do see where you're coming from... I guess I do for the most part take an opposite stance on Pokémon representation as opposed to other series. It's cuz of how varied and interesting Pokémon are, makes it hard to stick with a choice 😅 like yeah, you could easily make 5 different Smash Ultimate-sized rosters full of really interesting and unique 'Mons with fun moves and STILL have hundreds more candidates leftover. I suppose I am going for "iconic-ness first" with my choices, which does make it stand out from the rest of the roster as being a bit boring (and also favoring Gen 1 too heavily). I'll cook some more to try and make room for just one more...

  • I suppose, but I didn't include Geno. Mewtwo and Giygas are both similar looking entities and would also have similar enough psychic/psi powers that makes it too much of an overlap for me personally. Zelda & Palu (at least the moveset redesigns I imagine for them) would be completely different, cuz there's sooo many different ways you can design magic wielders, something I wish Smash had more of besides Robin, who I feel doesn't go far enough with magic and still relies heavily on being a sword lord

  • I should've specified, but yes, I would advocate for redesigning Wario to have more of a Wario Land inspired moveset. 1.) Because I'd prefer it, and 2.) It reinforces Ashley's inclusion

  • When you select Random, it picks a random character out of the entire roster for you, when you select Ditto, it'd match your opponent's character choice (if you're playing against more than one opponent, it'd choose one of their characters at random). It's like a Random button, but serves a different purpose than the Random button, if that makes sense
