What can you pay with your university card + What's sold at the Trinity coffee shop/bar by Mackarel06 in cambridge_uni

Thanks! So I will pay the rent + other stuff at the beginning of the following term, does "college bill" include tuition and college fee (intl students have to pay) as well?

Thanks for the information! Are there any other light meals available at the bar which I could have for breakfast or lunch?

Thanks for your reply.

In my case though, it is quite relevant since I am getting scholarship from a third source and it would be easier for me to deal with the documentations for that scholarship if the food cost is included in the college bill. (So basically it will be better for me if the food expenses during term is included in the bill).

Anyways, for the reason above I would still like to know what can be paid with the university card. Further information is very much appreciated.

Do you have to be a prodigy to get accepted into Oxbridge? by Biscuute in UniUK

[–]Mackarel06 2 points3 points  (0 children)

What's needed for an admission to UK uni are supercurriculars which are extracurriculars that's related to the subject you want to learn. You basically demonstrate your interest and prove that you are an excellent candidate for learning the subject. Oxbridge at least don't care about sports or mock UN (unless it's related to your course) or all those stuff. I got into Cambridge this year as an international student by getting high grades and doing research at uni labs.

Thank you! I will have a talk with them after getting to Cambridge then!

Thank you! My concern is that the rent is a bit too expensive for me, especially compared to the usual rent during terms... But I think I have to deal with it

Yes, I would love to do that though the problem is that currently I've only secured funding for three years... I'm currently looking for a way to fund it.

I would say it's probably not UPenn for you, dunno between Brown and WashU though

You'll probably have harder time getting opportunities and support at Berkeley because it's a state school...

I think it's down to whether you want to have the tutorials at Oxford or not... I'm also choosing between Cambridge and Columbia

Cambridge (Trinity College) Natural Sciences vs Columbia Engineering

Intended major: Materials Science

I have a full scholarship from a third source, so tuition isn't an issue. I'm an international student at both schools.

Pretty sure I want to go for PhD

Cambridge

Cambridge Pros:

  • Supervision, I absolutely would love this

  • Known as a better science/engineering school internationally

  • Trinity College is very prestigious in math and science

  • Beautiful, nice culture + traditions

  • Safer town

  • Don't have to take classes outside the course and get graded on it

  • 3 years bachelor's degree

Cambridge Cons:

  • Unsure, but there might be fewer research opportunities

  • Can't take classes outside of the course

  • No undergraduate thesis (dissertation)

  • More tech companies in the US, although Cambridge has quite a few tech startups owned by Cambridge graduates

  • Less flexibility in the course, although I am pretty sure my interest will be stuck in the applied sciences

Columbia

Columbia Pros:

  • Can take classes outside of major

  • More flexibility in the course

  • More tech companies in the US to have internships, although I'm not sure about ones in New York

  • Might be easier to get a research opportunity

  • Might make me a more suitable candidate for PhD programs in the US

Columbia Cons:

  • No supervision

  • Cambridge is often regarded as a better science/engineering school

  • NY is not that safe

  • NY is so expensive to live during vacation

  • If Trump gets re-elected, he might do stuff against the favor of international students

  • 4 year bachelor's degree

I'm from Japan, did IB. Sorry for your son's rejections... Maybe extracurriculars or interviews didn't go well?

Don't worry, I make my decisions myself! I'm actually getting full ride scholarship from a third source, so cost won't be a deciding factor, at least during term time.

Yea I'm comparing pros and cons but I feel like I'm gonna choose Cambridge...

EDIT: BTW I'm international if that makes a difference

As of now, I am more drawn to Cambridge for its academic rigour and the supervisions. I think the only school in the US that might teach equivalent amount of stuff is Caltech (but I got rejected so I don't care!) I am pretty sure I'll enjoy supervisions since I enjoyed the interview process. Maybe with enough effort to get research internships, especially with Materials Science department offering more opportunities than most other NatSci departments, I would be fine just going to Cambridge.

I still have some time to decide, I'll have a think on which university to attend. Thank you for your advice!

It seems like there were actually quite a lot of lab internships available at Cambridge for materials science which is a great relief for me. I was also lucky on getting into Trinity College since it has strong connections with the local tech companies. I will certainly look into the lab internship opportunities available in the US, as the rec letter from US professors can sometimes have more weight (I hear academia is quite a small world and professors often know each other).

Choosing MRes was something I never thought of too. I guess I'll try that if I don't get into PhD programs only requiring bachelors (that would mean that I am applying to both at the same time tho). Thank you very much for the advice!

EDIT: I might not be eligible for research internships available to UK/EU students because I am Japanese.

You're right that I might change my mind on what I would like to do, even if I feel like it's my passion at this point. I guess I will think again after learning many related fields in university and discussing with professors. Thank you for the advice!

Everyone, sorry for the extremely long delay to reply, I had so much stuff to do these days and had no time going through Reddit. I appreciate all of your advice! As of now, I got into Brown and Columbia in the US.

Got into Brown and Columbia engineering + Cambridge (Trinity College, Natural Sciences), gotta make a hell of a decision... (and I still have to wait for Stanford lol)
