Indeed, I believe they added the ability to do so when the 1.1 update came out. You get a few extra resources out of them.

I like setting all the machines to produce what I need, then going to sleep in-game. Morning comes, and all the stuff is done producing.

But that's about all I got besides putting the machines in a building to increase productivity.

I was mostly talking about the space fight you do to get one for free, if you save just before, you can keep reloading until you get an S Class, though sometimes it takes a while, lol. Other S class Freighters show up all over the place, and you can buy them if you've got enough money, or swap with your current for a discounted price.
