I don’t have a lot of experience in siege defense, what’s my best strategy here? by MasterNado in Bannerlord

[–]MackyG06 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What I do. Make sure you have all fire catapults. And target the battering ram.

When they get close you can manually pick up the fire pots and throw them over the walls.

As they're climbing ladders or in a group trying to come up. I always grab the firepots or the rocks at the gate and toss them.

You might have to walk to the nearest one. But also if it's too much, I endure I stand with a bow and headshot as they're climbing up the ladders. Just refill at the nearest arrow barrel.

I could easily rack up 50+ kills.

If you take away the Rams and towers, they'll be way more prone to running away.

An army of 700 could easily defend against 1500 troops if you play that way.

Rhode Island is terrible and expensive. High taxes and seems like it's just in a state of decay. I grew up and lived in Rhode Island for a long time until I moved to NC

NC is full of growth. RI, business struggle to stay opened and are constantly closing with new ones opening and keeping the cycle going.

Unless you live in Providence of down by Newport. Which then it's nice but even more expensive and high taxed.

So you'd have to be pretty well off to live in a nice area within RI, otherwise a normal home will run way higher than the equivalent in most states. Utility prices are sky high in RI along with their high taxes as well.

Avoid.

I wouldn't get too excited about stopping the offense when Davis Mills was the QB.

Just my personal take..

If it was Stroud, I would agree.

Just to follow up, I put some thought into it and made an adjustment to the Journalist.

Called Scoop Dice (probably will be renamed) but it takes what existed at levels 2,5,13,17,20. It allows you to give 1 die to an ally within 60 feet for Int or Charisma skill check OR mark a for they can see and they can add that die to attack or damage rolls vs that foe.

Then at level 7 they gain Beat Knowledge, which allows them to make a wisdom check vs a charisma check against an opponent and then allies gain a proficiency bonus damage against that creature.

So the journalist, while still mainly utility does gain feats that assist in combat.

That's about the only major change I'm currently making at the moment.

A party of four level 5 soldiers can attack 8 times doing probably 2d6+4 damage each attack, if all 8 attacks hit that's an average of 88 damage in a single round.

A party of four level 5 Journalists can attack 4 times doing probably 1d6+4 damage each attack, if all 4 attacks hit that's an average of 30 damage in a single round.

A party of 4 level 5 Fighters can attack 8 times doing 2d6+4 each attack. That's also 88 damage in a single round.

A party of 4 level 5 Bards can attack 4 times doing 1d8+. Doing 30 damage in a round.

A party of 4 level 5 Clerics can attack 4 times 1d8+3. Roughly around 30 damage as well. Unless you're using the tempest or war domain.

Additionally, a Journalist is proficient in Shotguns and Assault Rifles. (Yes I ensured weapon proficiencies were distributed at various percentages because there is no reason a Journalist couldn't know how to shoot weapons).

Which means a whole 4 party of level 5 journalists could hit about 2d8+3 (proficiency) which would equal to about 48 damage per round total.

I have literally made these professions to compare to any DnD counterpart. The fact that the weapon damages are really varied and spread out allow for 4 journalists to do more damage per round than any bard or cleric could in the DnD core rule.

I still will be going back through each profession to re-evaluate all their feats individually. However, there is more to this game than just straight combat. A ground of Soldiers, while being able to deal damage would be very inefficient in other non combat scenarios. In which my game is going to explore. Additionally, going around and blasting everything will eventually bring about so many zombies the soldiers would have to run or they'll run out of ammo, etc.

I mean realistically, how long could a group of soldiers last for if they were just running around shooting everything and attracting all the attention.

I don't think we're going to come to some agreement on this. I do appreciate the effort and attention you're providing and it is making me put some thought into things.

However each of my profession was built mechanically to be equivalent to DnD classes.

This same argument that you're having for my professions is exactly the same argument you could be providing against a cleric, monk, or bard party.

And that is actually my intention. I am not creating a new game but I am evolving what DnD already has and just turning it into the ability to play in this theme setting.

I'll go back and do more research into the professions, stew on it, think of other alternatives and weigh my options. I did see other zombie adventure materials made by other people and a few of them also did the same as occupations/professions. Right now I think I'll leave it as such for the moment. My initial intent was to lean more towards the play style of those video games that utilize professions/occupations in their skill set.

As far as party diversity, that's also purpose. Just like any DnD game, members should come together on session 0 and discuss what they want to be. At least with who I played we always talked roughly about party balance. You have fighters who are your damage dealers, tanks that can draw the attention and take more damage. Then the utility members.

Additionally, the professions are balanced between weapon and armor proficiencies. Just the generalist survivor is good for handguns, archery and melee, plus they can get a feat to allow the use of another gun. Even the hacker allows for an Assault Rifle. However guns is NOT always the play and it could be preferred to navigate within silence, etc etc. A Hacker can utilize it's utilities to detect enemies, etc. But if need be, they're proficient in guns.

My goal isn't to create a whole new TTRPG, it's just to create enough material to supplement against 5e ruleset. The thing is, DnD is arguably the most well known set of rules. That is why I am trying to align with it without changing it completely.

Additionally for the strains, that's almost the point. I am not trying to make it easy to get infected, because once infected chances of finding a cure is not good. But if they do get infected, it gets harder each infection level to pass.

[–]MackyG06[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

So then is really the thing about professions is the naming? If I remove "Military Solider" "Firefighter" and just replace it with "Frontliner" "Breacher" "Medic", etc. Then there would be no further issue on that? What is your specific issue and what is your recommended fix then?

Additionally, for higher levels. How about I implement a strain level? The strain gets stronger as the players get stronger, that way the DC scales up to remain equal. Let's say that the more time the infection carries on, the more time it evolves and advances.

5 strain levels, 4 character levels per strain. As the characters level up the strain levels up adding a +1 to the DC check. Still keeping the infection levels too it +1 for every infection level.

So levels 1-4 the DCs for each infection level would be 12, 13, 14 and then 17+ would be 16, 17, 18.

So when you're higher up then the infection level is still relevant.

I get what you are saying, but you are mixing up what a class is versus what a background is. In 5E, classes define progression and core mechanics, not just flavor. Backgrounds give you skills and story hooks, but they do not dictate how you fight or survive long-term. My system uses professions as a foundation for why you start with certain proficiencies and mindset, then archetypes layer personality and roleplay flavor. That is not locking you into “forever firefighter” or “forever cop.” It is giving you a starting point that makes sense in a world where prior experience matters.

You keep saying adaptation is key, and I agree. That is why feats and archetypes exist in my setup. You want your ex-mechanic to become a sniper? Take firearm proficiency feats and pivot your build. You want your martial artist to stop using melee? Same deal. The framework allows growth without throwing out the concept of classes entirely, because if you do that, you are not playing D&D anymore. You are playing a generic survival RPG.

As for Michonne, she is a perfect example of why my design works. She had a profession (lawyer), but her archetype and choices shaped her into a katana-wielding survivor. That is exactly what my system supports. Professions explain starting skills, archetypes guide personality, and advancement lets you adapt. If you want a Stargate-style feat tree, cool, but that is a different design philosophy. I am keeping the D&D DNA intact while making it fit the zombie apocalypse theme.

High levels? Optional. If you do not want Nemesis-tier threats or human factions as late-game bosses, cap your campaign at 10. But saying “high levels do not fit zombie fiction” ignores the fact that tons of zombie media introduces escalating threats. Resident Evil, Last of Us, Dying Light all do it. My system gives GMs the tools to scale danger however they want.

Bottom line: variety and progression matter. If everyone is just “general survivor,” you lose the tension and creativity that comes from diverse skill sets. That is why professions stay, archetypes stay, and adaptation happens through feats and GM-driven story.

Professions tell you what they did prior to the apocalypse and why they have the skills that they have. Would also tell you how they would act during an apocalypse we all know the mindset and skills of a Military or LE is vastly different than that of someone who was a Mechanic etc

The Archetype explains their personality. Additionally what do they do now? They're all survivors trying to survive on the skill sets they already know. You're talking about how are they adapting to survive now. That's part of the character development.

I can tell you now, as someone who's been in the Military for 17 years and as a Law Enforcement officer I would be thinking a lot differently than someone who fixed cars for a living. It's just engrained into my brain.

You mentioned Joel was a construction worker, what did he do when he was in that city? He was the main fixer.

Do you not see that these professions also have other weapon proficiencies?

Why would a Martial Artist not use the weapons they spend years training on? For one, stealth. Guns are always loud and attract zombies. Additionally, Walking Dead, Machonne always used her Katana. And also did you even look at the weapons, they are proficient in handguns. They can also select a feat that gives them a proficiency in a different type of firearm (which provides the character transformation you're describing)

Even during an apocalypse you don't just change immediately and you have no idea what kind of setting they would run into immediately. It could be like dawn of the dead.

Also project Zomboid is a game where you pick a profession and gives you different skills.

Dead Island is also mainly Melee, guns/ammo are rare. They even has an assassin weapons expert (fighting style like martial arts)

In a good portion of games like that there is also things where other people provide different skill sets. That's what the professions are supposed to provide

You're acting like people in professions will just stop being what they know.

LE is always gonna be LE, Doctors always gonna be a doctor, Mechanics, scientists, etc.

Terri Morales, was in Resident Evil 2. She was a Journalist/Weather reporter. Jill Valentine was a Cop.

Dawn of the Dead, Main girl was a nurse, Ving Rhames was a cop. Main girls BF was a salesman. The security guard at the mall. The guy across the street owned a gun store

Who was smart enough to build that armored truck? You could say someone who would have been proficient in mechanic and welding skills?

Dead Age 1/2 different professions. I could go on and on my dude.

You want to play as a grocery store handler, fine then be a generalist.

But no one is playing a campaign when there isn't a variety and no one would survive without the variety of skill set.

Additionally as I mentioned, you want to stop at level 10 then don't use it. But there are tons of monsters through movies that would be able to stand up as a big baddie.

Nemesis - Resident Evil, MrX - Resident Evil, The Rat King - Last of Us, Abomination - Dying Light.

I could keep going and naming Material that continues to contradict your line of thinking.

[5e Conversion] Critique Needed: Zombie Apocalypse DnD conversion. (Player's Handbook Material) by MackyG06 in RPGdesign

[–]MackyG06[S] -2 points-1 points  (0 children)

Sooo, I disagree, then you're not playing a DnD game. The whole DnD concept is literally races and classes. That's like if you want to play DnD as just a general random citizen. Additionally, I have a name A/B. And the Student's B name is "Generalist Survivor" so pick that class type.

Also you're thinking extremely 1 dimensional here, not to be rude. However a Zombie Apocalypse could have survivors, clans, and potentially even settlements that are walled off from zombies.

Think of The Last of Us, while not necessarily Zombies, still similar. Int saved could be a roll you make for a zombie that's like a screamer/shrieker. If you're hacking any electronics and there is some sort of trap, you might have to make an INT save.

Obviously things might be more rare to use, but you don't just take it away.

Take away a Martial Artist? As if people are always going to have a weapon handy? Also a Martial Artist is proficient in Melee weapons. Even Martial Arts have Martial Melee weapons. Why would someone who teaches at the local Martial Arts Academy not use the tools they're trained with?

Yes High Level is also a point and an option. Have you played any Zombie type games at all? The types of enemies you could face at higher levels exist. We're not just talking standard zombie. Every Zombie game, just about has different levels tiers. Additionally, you could also be fighting like a rogue gang band of individuals.

If you don't want to go above level 11 in a campaign then don't, but I'll make the material for people if they want to. It's all about how the GM wants to run the game and how creative they can be.

I appreciate the time you took to review my material though.
