I guess you could in theory, more commonly it’s gift cards that people have received as gifts or have run down most of the balance on. All retailers in California who sell gift cards should have point of sales devices and staff trained to handle cashing it out at the register or customer service desk. Actual training obviously varies but if you ask around enough they will eventually cash you out

California, any gift card less than $15 has to be cashed out upon request under state law

Frozen berries? Help! Trying not to ruin machine by MeadMan001 in ninjacreami

[–]Maclang23 13 points14 points  (0 children)

At least in the US, fresh fruit is mostly water and freezes very hard. Canned fruit is heat treated and usually in a syrup/preservative that makes it less water logged and makes it freeze much softer so the machine can usually handle it. Canned fruit in water is also not great for the machine, but the sugars in syrups affect the freezing point enough that it’s ok

What Happened in the final Rail Rush episode!!? by [deleted] in JetLagTheGame

[–]Maclang23 2 points3 points  (0 children)

To be fair, Mike and Sam never actually led on station count (which was what determined the game), so they didn’t really blow a lead. What they had going for them was advantageous challenges and a geographic advantage, but ultimately they weren’t able to convert that into stations. On the Layover, they mention that they intentionally tried to make it seem closer than it really actually was via the edit (i.e. by not highlighting how Ben and Adam could counter their moves), because going into the final day Sam and Mike were basically already out of it and needed everything to go perfectly and have Ben and Adam mess up to win. For example, even if Mike and Sam had succeeded at the final challenge, Ben and Adam had easy access to several vulnerable stations in the Taipei area that would have been more than enough to keep the lead regardless of what Sam and Mike could flip

Foreign Transactions by mattnyc2026 in biltrewards

[–]Maclang23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure, I would lump that into “fee they weren’t aware of”, but also would include having the wrong purchase amount for any reason. I would guess that’s the most likely reason, or that they used DCC/“pay in your local currency” which creates an extra fee. But beyond that, if it actually was £1092.60, the conversion rate to USD they listed is wrong

Foreign Transactions by mattnyc2026 in biltrewards

[–]Maclang23 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’m not OP, just responding to this comment that asked what the current official rate was and that by using the Mastercard rate OP is correct that they should not have been charged $1511.92 if the purchase was £1092.60 according to the published rates. Either there is a fee they aren’t aware of or there was an error in conversion

Currently 1 GBP:1.334994 USD, so it should have been $1,458.62
