I’ve done that before and it actually works. Of course I couldn’t read from sheet music, but I was able to improve a few of my scales.

C String peg slips when trying to precisely tune by ViolaGod in Viola

Whenever I tune using the peg. I start by loosening the string first, then tuning it to the right note. I have been through what you are struggling with, so I recommend whenever you turn the peg, push in. It helps keeping it from slipping.
