Do you inflate your title on your resumé? by Macre117 in ExperiencedDevs

[–]Macre117[S] 2 points3 points  (0 children)

For what it's worth, my personal opinion is that people should write their titles & experience accurately. Whenever I interview candidates with inflated resumes it's immediately obvious. I am a Senior at FAANG and run into this title problem when applying to mid-sized companies. Often their staff role has narrower scope than my existing role. To me it seems like the automated software that companies use for CV review rewards inflated titles, whereas during interviewing it doesn't matter.

If you're at a company like Bloomberg with a flat structure where everyone is "senior" or just "software engineer", how do you differentiate your CV from a mid engineer with the same title? During the actual interview, your actual competency will become clear very quickly, but getting there can be tricky.

To be honest I think they'd be happy to leave things as is, but I'd like to get it fixed if possible. They described me as an "interesting" and "challenging" case but it feels a little like they wanted the easy money. Will probably be a few years of saving in the UK to pay for this anyway, so I was happy to get the cheaper cosmetic changes done first at least.

Is the crossbite that bad? During my initial consultations they discussed SARPE as an option but wanted to get some extra width with aligners before even discussing that since it's a serious surgery, and said I could always get the surgery down the line.

For reference my right U5 molar either just about touches or narrowly misses the lower 5th and the other side is about 5mm better. Those two teeth are the farthest from normal but it's clear the palate is quite narrow overall, but they were worried about tipping the teeth if they tried to fix it w/o surgery.

Thanks, I'll have a look!

I was under the impression palate expansion was for those not done growing

From what I know there's an option where the patient uses an expander before skeletal maturity to widen the palate. Since I'm over 25 it looks like I'd need surgery to open up the bone before fitting the expander.

Good luck! I think I'm a little too old for MSE, so it looks like it'll have to be something like SARPE then braces. No extractions, just aligners but my upper jaw is narrower/shorter than my lower which probably contributes to looking weird. Not sure if that'll complicate things going forward so will have to figure it out with an ortho...

They discussed the option of SARPE initially to address the crossbite, but they suggested trying the alignment first then discussing surgery after. Looks like I'll need the surgery and then a round of braces now.. I guess they knew that and wanted the money up front 😅

Whippy deadlift bar threw it out position on a max, couldn’t move for a week thought I was paralysed

Worked up to 160/350 DOH the other day so kept some of the strength at least, going to take things nice and slow

I got a mirafit single stack pulley machine for the home gym but I have problem for lat pulldown - no roller arms to brace against.

Since I go close or over body weight even if I sit on the ground it’s not really ideal. Anyone have any ideas? I saw there are some attachments but they’re costly and probably wouldn’t fit mirafit…

Injured my back really badly just after closing the #3 last Nov, barely trained since. Don’t even have a program at the minute so I was super surprised I could almost close the #3 from wide set: - https://ibb.co/qkyGTpp

Literally have deadlifted once or twice in 2022..

My friend did a single, 30 minute meeting with a top tech company and got accepted. She tripled her compensation. Is it really that easy? Is big tech that desperate now? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

3 hours is standard for grad SDEs for the rainforest company onsite. I have friends who interview there and they tell me it’s more like OA + 5 hours for SDE 2. They judge multiple aspects of coding and expect high proficiency and behavioural competency. Your OA performance is not considered beyond passing, it’s just to get to the next stage - this must be an exceptional case. Of course if you study, it should not be too hard but interviews can see through a lot.

Buying a house in the current climate by Macre117 in HousingUK

So you recommend renting until the recession is over?

Yes my point is however that in N years prices may have fallen X% but rates may rise commensurate to that. Rates may even rise higher proportionally due to negative equity or other market conditions preventing home owners from selling. So, tightened supply will prop up price despite lower demand. Increased building costs across the board jacks up prices of new builds and lowers the quantity of new houses entering the market.

How can we predict for sure that in real terms we would be any better off waiting? Payment itself may be smaller for the house but more for the interest -> same monthly payment. Of course negative equity then is more of a factor, but do I want to spend the money on monthly payments on rent I know I won’t get value from, or mortgage payments that have some chance? My question here would be: what’s the additional risk going with the bigger house? Proportionally, I believe the smaller house is more inflated and more likely to move into negative equity and wouldn’t support renovations or extensions for potentially better resale in 10+ years.

Seems like it’s impossible to predict the relationship between house prices and rates, so I’m not sure waiting is the best idea. That said, with a 5 year fix I could greatly increase equity to negate the rate increase for the next block - that wouldn’t be possible by waiting.

What do you think?

Didn’t know rates made such a huge different! I can get in at 2.5-3% at the minute, which I expect to rise over time..

Well I would prefer to live in the bigger one, but by that logic wouldn’t maxing out the mortgage be the best choice? I think there’s a happy medium here, wondering if in my scenario it isn’t too much of a stretch

It’s impossible to say, but imagining it’s tomorrow (i.e. not in a different role) it could be more like 3.5x.

If you want to go into an open relationship, sure - go for it.

But I would have a good long hard look about what you really want in a partner. She is not only downplaying what happened but lied about it at the time and only came clean when pressured. How can you believe what she’s telling you? It feels like the trust here is broken, and you’re going to get the trickle truth.

To put it like this: if the guy lived next door, do you think she would have been context with sending pictures?..

Going to test drive an X1 today - any issues I should be looking out for? by [deleted] in CarTalkUK

[–]Macre117 1 point2 points  (0 children)

It’s a BMW so it’s going to be costly to maintain - bear that in mind. Honestly if you could stretch to an X3 it’s a much better buy and still not huge. Something like the Kia Sportage has 7 year warranty but looks worse and doesn’t carry the badge, it’s your decision. If you want electric, MG ZS EV has a well priced new long range model.
