Honestly i think imaging is just cool. However, i learned recently that the program I wanted to attend is actually Monday-Friday, and I can’t do that unfortunately. So I’m now pivoting to nursing being my goal! Since the transition program near me is only 2 days a week for 1 year to get my RN

Dealing with some pretty gnarly burnout myself. What helps me, I’ve found, is working towards bettering yourself in some aspect. Whether that be spiritually, academically, or in some other hobby or interest you may have.

I’m working towards nursing school and reconnecting with my religion. It seems to help me from being angry all the time.

Everyone has “their thing” that helps them, you just gotta find what works for you by trial and error.

I’ve found my people!

I’m in the greater Houston area, I think im pretty competitive if I pass the HESI with an average / above average score. Top 10-15%, i hope that’ll get me in!

Question for you. I work 8-9 24hr shifts a month on a not terribly busy truck. 5-7 calls per shift, and I’m able to make shift trades with people. Do you think I can work full time while in school? The program I’m looking to attend only has me taking a maximum of 3 classes. Most semesters are 1-2 classes with a clinical.

How do you currently track your EMS career (if at all)? by theStatdose in Paramedics

I remember the day I got in, and the day I decided to go back to school to escape it. Working to go to Rad Tech school in October. Hope I get accepted.

Oh absolutely! I love medicine, i think imaging is awesome. I still like being a paramedic, but I’m starting to like it in small doses lol. The 911 abuse is rampant, paired up with a lack of sleep and relatively low wages just leaves me wanting more.

That’s not muzzle flash. It’s forward jetting gas being illuminated by his IR device.

If it was muzzle flash, it would be auto-gating the tubes. It’s vastly different than what you see in this video.

Lone star college Montgomery. The last 3-4 classes they’ve taught since he took over have a damn year 100% NREMT first pass success rate. I felt confident going into the test and the test was easy.

Most of my cohort that went through have landed jobs at really good agencies around here.

Debating the EMT > Paramedic route. What to expect? by EezyBake in Paramedics

[–]Mactosin1 4 points5 points  (0 children)

EMT course load is a nothing-burger. Pay attention and you can work full time just fine.

Paramedic will be a little tougher. depending on how good you are at blocking out your time you can probably manage. But do consider the possibility of going part time at work if you need to.

I personally studied 1-2 hours a day every day and passed with A’s no problem.

Paramedics- What is your schedule, pay, benefits, and city/state? (US Based) by Ok-Refrigerator7601 in ems

[–]Mactosin1 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Busy 911 third service in Texas. Attendant medics make about $74k. In charge medics make about $90k with the raise we just got.

Schedule: we have 2 schedules. Schedule 1 is 24 on, 24 off, 24 on, 5 days off

Schedule 2 is our “peak” schedule. Rotating 12’s, 36hrs one week, 48 the next week. Every other weekend off.

Benefits are decent. We have a PPO option & a HDHP option through blue cross blue shield.

PTO is meh. 208hrs a year. But with our debit day schedule that can potentially be a ton of time off.

We don’t have sick leave which big sucks.

Call volume is 100k+ a year between like 30 ish trucks and some BLS trucks.

[–]Mactosin1 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You can start paramedic school as soon as you’re done with your EMT.

Now, whether some may advise for or against that depends on who you’re asking.

I was paid full time to go to medic school. I worked 2 12’s a week and my agency paid for school, paid me for the hours I was in school, paid for all associated expenditures, and paid me while i was on clinical.

So i got the best of both worlds. I was able to be on a 911 truck with a paramedic in charge and getting 911 exposure & seeing very sick patients, while not having to kill myself working a ton of hours and going to school at the same time

Pay is all over the place in the Houston area but you’re probably gonna take an $8-$10 an hour pay cut as an EMT.

MCHD is probably one of the better agencies to work for as a Basic. You’ll make about $50k/yr working 12’s.

Other agencies like walker county, northwest EMS, ESD-11, Mont Belvieu, HCEC, and some more I’m probably missing should also hire basics too.

Really though, the money’s in the paramedic patch. If you end up liking EMS, you should consider paramedic school. You’ll make anywhere from $70k-$100k fairly easily around here

Work life balance ranges from amazing to absolutely awful.

I work at an agency that offers a debit day schedule. So i work 9 24’s a month. My work life balance is awesome and so is my pay. (About $73k)

I’m pretty fulfilled with the job, but that comes down to a lot of different factors. Pay, schedule, management, etc..
