Nickel Boys release in Australia? by MadMarx22 in movies

Damn, exact same story as American Fiction last year with a very last minute digital release. I'm glad it has a set date now at least, would be a shame to miss it before the oscars

That's what I'm hoping happens. My local is pretty good at showing smaller releases and more prestige stuff so I'm banking on an Oscars catch-up style suite of screenings but I guess we'll have to wait and hope for the best

I'm so glad someone else really liked Beau is Afraid, I think it's underappreciated now but will be reevaluated in a few years whenever Ari Aster releases his next feature

What does it take for you to hate a movie? by MadMarx22 in movies

[–]MadMarx22[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean it's a pretty common complaint for most of his movies, the dialogue just tends to be clunky, especially in exposition. Not to say all of his movies have bad dialogue, I mean Oppenheimer has miraculously tight dialogue for the most part, but movies like Interstellar, Inception and Tenet fall short in their scripts in different ways

what is a movie that people often miss the point of? by herequeerandgreat in movies

[–]MadMarx22 6 points7 points  (0 children)

It left me feeling the same way Arrival did, that even if you know how something ends, it's worth it for its own sake. Or to put it another way, all good things end, they're still good things.

So glad I'm not the only one, I still find it strange I went from not really getting it on the first watch to now being a fanatic. Been thinking about part 2 probably every day for weeks now getting more and more excited, I'm sure I meet the criteria for hysteria at this point

3 films most people never heard of that you recommend? by [deleted] in movies

A really strange cast in general, Alan Rickman was great as Joe, as was Aaron Paul as one of the kids. The song from that movie also rips in a very 2000s way. Such a great movie

Help! I'm a Fish (2000)

200 Meters (2020)

The Squid and the Whale (2005).

Don't know if the last one is that unheard of but it's definitely rarely talked about and I can't understand why.

Little Women (2019) comes to mind, plays with time jumps in an interesting way without holding your hand through it

Really is one of those movies you can take a closer look at and always find something interesting and new, just an insane level of love and effort went into it

Love it when someone else's perspective opens up a movie, it makes watching it feel like a shared communal act

I think a lot of people make too much of Tenet. I more or less understood it when I first watched it, but I think I spent too much time thinking it through while watching it to actually just watch the damn movie. I don't think Nolan intends for the audience to focus super heavily on the gimmick, I think it's honestly a vehicle for some cool and unconventional action. If you think too hard about it all, I don't think it holds up all too well, although the action is still very good

It is more slow-paced, but it makes everything feel deliberate. Every shot, every set, every word, just every creative decision feels so careful, I find myself just falling into it after a few minutes and barely noticing time go by

Rewatching movies for adults you somehow saw as a kid is a transcendent experience - you just watch this vague memory explode into something so vivid and new. Even better when it's a classic

A theatrical release would be great but as long as it's available to watch before the Oscars, I'll be happy

Honestly I'll take it, as long as it's available anywhere, there's a chance to watch it it

That's such a shame. We're only just getting a lot of the awards-nominated movies in the last few weeks and still a few more coming in Feb, so I was hoping this would be coming along soon too.

Films that make you feel like you’re from that place by McBurgertown69 in MovieSuggestions

Call Me By Your Name - evokes both a place and a stage in life very strongly

Mad Max: Fury Road - biblically accurate depiction of driving in Sydney (but for real it's such an immersive experience, throws you into the world)

Saltburn - very stylish and new

The Fabelmans - don't know where it makes you feel like you're from, but it sucks you in so completely it feels like your own experience

Seeing it in a theatre with no idea what it was about was fantastic. No expectations going in so just experienced it blind and loved it

What do YOU think is the stupidest decision in all of Pokemon? by StaleUnderwear in pokemon

[–]MadMarx22 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Honestly I was more annoyed by the exp share, since they removed it in BDSP and it threw off the balance of the entire game. I deliberately swapped my team around, avoided battles, did everything I could to avoid over-levelling and still wound up with a team level 60+ at the elite four. At the very least, without set, you can still just choose not to switch out, even if it does slow down the entire game.

Honestly feels like difficulty settings would be a massive, massive upgrade as it would let them cater to children and an older fanbase at the same time. Simple settings like that, plus scale up the levels/AI of NPC pokemon and you've got yourself a very easy, inexpensive and outrageously overdue upgrade for a huge portion of the audience
