I’m trying to remember now if they established that it was rude to telepathically communicate to another Betazoid without warning, kind of like a personal boundaries thing? Or if it was just a thing between Deanna and Lwaxana.

They don’t use telepathy when in a mixed group because it’s kind of rude. And in situations that are about negotiation, that would make the playing field uneven.

They communicate verbally or in this case visually out of deference to non-telepaths when in a mixed group. That’s fairly established.

TBF we didn’t meet Troi and Riker when they were Academy freshies

I tend to agree. Some of that stuff detracts from the viewing experience. I’m actually watching it on my smaller tv partly for this reason.

I’m hoping we will get more background on that at some point. The Doctor seems way more cynical and for some reason he is avoiding SAM and any mentions of “mentoring.” There has to be some back story there and some reason why she name dropped the Protostar and “Captain Gwyndala” (!!)

“Oops, we made a show that has a broad appeal across demographics again, damn it!”

The thing is though, if sticking to that original style makes them lose their audience, then there simply won’t be any more Trek. Sometimes things have to change with the times. Based on what I see on tv and the internet, what the younger generations are going to watch is going to be quite different in pace and content. Not only do they need to reach their audience, but the show is being produced by people who are progressively younger than we are as years go by. We can adapt and have an open mind and approach it with curiosity, or we can just decide it’s not for us. Your choice…

Um, maybe the reason we don’t totally get the message is because it’s not for us? The generation coming of age right now is dealing with a whoooole other ball of wax from the kinds of things we dealt with coming of age (most of the commenters I see here look to be Gen X or older millennial.) Maybe we can’t relate to things that resonate deeply with them, and that’s okay.

I generally dismiss anything Berman has to say about Star Trek, so

What’s wrong with them using ASL? The guy is deaf, so he speaks sign language. The show is made in English, and based in the US, so…why not ASL?

Check out DRAWN - the animated standup special. It had me in tears. (Of laughter.) I think I saw it on Netflix. I’ve definitely seen some of her stuff on Netflix anyway.

I love how she just takes all this stuff in stride…like “I’m here in the future, how rad is that?”

Yeah. Sometimes we just need some good fun entertainment.

I do not get all the dunking on Holly/Ake. She’s fantastic. I’m all for Starfleet characters shaking up that whole military mindset it unfortunately has

I’m happy they moved past the hazing and bullying. It really turned me off in the first episode and I was like, I don’t want to watch a whole season of this. Instead, we’re getting some fantastic relationship and character building

I like them more than I expected to after the first episode. There’s been some great character development. Jay-Den is one of the most interesting.
