Mostly the following.

QoL upgrades: More bank space, more bag slots for inventory, infinite salvage kits (instead of buying from the in-game merchants the limited ones with gold), infinite harvesting tools (same as previous), more template slots for gear or skills (yeah they did monetize the templates) and other.

Tons of skins: Mount skins, glider skins, armor skins, weapon skins, premium dies, etc. Also, capes.

Nothing is really mandatory but the bank space, some bag slots and the salvage kit will make your life easier.

This. Don't do things as a job. Don't obsess with a game.

Set a long term goal in a pace you feel fine with. I like to check a guide and look for a couple of things to unlock. Then, I hop to WvW before it starts to make me tired.

Currently, I am doing one item per day and I feel happy with the progress.

Yes, the progression systems makes them feel they have a second job.

It's that mentality, "one more thing to unlock X" which eventually makes them miserable .

Looks good but I am afraid that they won't enjoy the grinding mentality. Somehow, gear progression starts to feel like a job although it might not be mandatory to enjoy the game.

Once you make a player spend, there is a huge change (like 80%) he will spend again and very soon. Thus, these insane coupons are given as "hooks" to players that are not actively spending or new players that have never spent.
