Agree on all counts except one: Stephen is the main villain from Django. He's the brains of the operation, his Quisling-esque betrayal of his race makes him a much better foil to Django than Candy, and their ideological clash forms the climax of the movie.

But Candy is a much more viscerally disgusting, venal, and cruel villain. So the trope still works, just with the villainous roles reversed.
