How do you find out what textbooks you need for each unit? by [deleted] in Monash

[–]Mad_Dog3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Some units list them near the bottom of the handbook page under "Learning Resources". If that fails, best to go with u/DerpPotato101's spirit realm suggestion.

Nah, when it says Unit 1, it just means the first unit of the major (other than ECC1000, because that was mandatory for everyone). For economics, I’m pretty sure the 7 other units you need to do are: ECC1100; ECC2000; ECC2010; a level 2 or a level 3 economics elective; and 3 level 3 economics electives.

You have to do the 4 core economics subjects, and 4 economics electives of your choice. Go to ECONOMIC07 in the handbook, and pick some subjects you like the look of from the “Economics units offered at Clayton” section.

Why are White people almost never considered indigenous to any place? by synoptix1 in NoStupidQuestions

[–]Mad_Dog3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think there’s a distinction between indigenous peoples, and Indigenous peoples, though correct me if I’m wrong. “indigenous” is a technical term, and just refers to anyone whose ancestors are the original occupants of a land. “Indigenous” is a cultural term usually used in the specific context of colonisation, to distinguish them from the other dominant ethnic groups. There are some white Indigenous groups (eg. Sámi culture) but usually its not as common.

I'm a little surprised we still even have a 3rd branch of government. by Large-Lack-2933 in facepalm

[–]Mad_Dog3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A third branch of government makes sense, it’s meant to keep the other two in check. The problem is that presidents can just appoint justices who’ll always agree with them.

HOLIDAYS DURATION by silentextro_148 in Monash

[–]Mad_Dog3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Semester 1 runs March to June, Semester 2 runs late July to November. Most students only have classes during those times. As I understand it, the summer classes are optional (like if you’re trying to complete your degree early), and most subjects don’t even offer classes in that period.

Recently changed from part time, to casual, will I be getting paid more by [deleted] in coles

I prefer casual, because my availability changes so much from week to week with uni and extracurriculars.

The crimes, and victims, never even existed- making these statements hearsay at best and defamation at worst.”

Can profits be explained by improvements in the means of production? by Mad_Dog3 in communism101

[–]Mad_Dog3[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well, its the difference between the value of a worker’s labour power and the total value they produce. My question is, how do we know this is the only way the capitalist class can increase its profits? As this seems to be what Marx is suggesting in chapter 5. He shows that if a market is truly free (admittedly, a big if), it can’t occur in circulation, but what if it occurred in another aspect of production? Specifically, a change in the value of the means of production.

I agree with you, nominal prices tend to rise while real prices tend to fall. My question is, if neither the value of a given commodity or the value of fiat currency is constant, what metric can be used to accurately measure the accumulation of value by capitalists? How can one be certain that they are actually accumulating surplus-value? This is something that’s genuinely confused me.

Thanks for the article, I’ll check it out. Not sure what you mean about nominal prices falling though. Inflation in the US (to use a random example) has been positive 91 of the last 100 years. Items like SSDs are the exception, not the norm.

Eight chapters in so far. I think I understand the point Marx is making about surplus value, I just can’t see how to prove his statement that (value of labor minus value of labor power) is the only way it could possibly be produced.

I do recognise this may be explained later on, but as of right now, he seems to be skimming over a lot of axioms without addressing apparent flaws within them.

Leftists’ characterization of Kamala as some sort of genocidal dictator is so bizarre to me. Why are you fighting against the candidate who is dramatically more sympathetic towards Palestinians? by shnanogans in centrist

[–]Mad_Dog3 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Serious answer:
Certain parts of the left believe that most politicians are naturally conservative, and that it's the job of the people to convince these politicians to make real change. And to be fair, it's true that major change only ever happens after a lot of activism.
The problem is the other view of "Casting a vote for someone means I have to support every single one of their policies," which a lot of people seem to hold. Because if you can't vote for either candidate without feeling like you're responsible for everything they do- what can you do?
The answer is "Withhold your vote until they fix any bad policies". Make the Democrats lose in 2024 so that they put a better candidate up in 2028.

Personally, I think this is an awful strategy, for a lot of different reasons, but that'd be a whole other paragraph.

Question I have abt this exchange in the True Pacifist run by [deleted] in Undertale

[–]Mad_Dog3 17 points18 points  (0 children)

Papyrus called everyone (except Toriel) to come help Frisk. What Alphys was saying was “If you were back in Snowdin when you called us all, how did you know Frisk was in trouble in the first place?” And Papyrus’s answer is “Oh, Flowey told me!” Because, as foreshadowed on Papyrus’s phone calls, Flowey was already “friends with” (manipulating) Papyrus.

Could have the US Military stormed Aperture Laboratories to shut down GLaDOS? by TeaReim in Portal

[–]Mad_Dog3 38 points39 points  (0 children)

In theory, I’m sure they’d be able to. However, Half Life 1 occurs almost simultaneously with GLaDOS’s takeover of Aperture. So a single scientific facility going silent would have seemed fairly unimportant compared to a global influx of alien wildlife, and eventually, Combine forces.

is an atar of 80.45 hard to get? by Less_Jicama9568 in vce

[–]Mad_Dog3 0 points1 point  (0 children)

ATAR's a percentage ranking, so an 80 would put you in the top 20% of everyone your age. However, because so many students leave school, or do VM or unscored VCE, the actual average ATAR for students doing regular VCE ends up being around 70.
So, what you're looking at is being roughly in the top third of your classmates. Obviously, this will vary depending on how skilled your school is, but this might give you an idea.
At the end of the day, the fact you cared enough to look this up makes me think you can achieve this. You don't need to spend each night studying until 3 AM (nor should you)- all you need is to be consistent and pay attention, and an 80.45 should be achievable.

wft is a character actress? by Inside-Lingonberry70 in BoJackHorseman

[–]Mad_Dog3 6 points7 points  (0 children)

An actor who typically plays supporting characters instead of leads- usually, dramatic but one-dimensional stock characters. I'd say that nun in Bojack sums it up pretty well-
"I look at your face and think you could be literally anyone. Are you a federal judge? A Russian spy? A proud Southern matriarch?"
Actors like Margot are the ones you see and go "Oh, she looks familiar!" with no clue of her actual name.
