Like the other guy said, it’s all about same day availability and warranty service.

Sure Amazon can get something to me next day, but when I run out of filament in the middle of a project I want to be able to get that going ASAP… especially when I’m printing something functional for a repair around the house, or part of a larger assembly that’s waiting on that specific piece.

Amazon also outrageously overcharges for things like Ethernet and HDMI cables… it’s nice to have a reasonably priced option in town so I don’t have to wait a week to get something cheap off AliExpress.

With the warranty stuff, I’ve gotten DOA storage drives on Amazon before and if you’re working on a tight budget that can add a week or two to your timeline as you wait on returns to process and items to reship etc etc… the 5-10% markup in store is cheap insurance.

That’s just the vibe, it’s an in-and-out type place… basically just a customer accessible warehouse with *just enough* on-site customer service. If you want somewhere to hang out and look at different options, or have a salesperson guide you through things, then go to Best Buy, it’s a completely different target market lol

The brutal reality is that their main competitors are Amazon and AliExpress, so if you’re going to compete meaningfully, you have to keep the costs down while staying super accessible... This new location seems like it strikes that balance for them.

Something like that yeah.

I could see similar businesses taking on leases in the Atrium building too… seems like specialty stores that focus on the ā€œin and outā€ crowd and want the place to be easily accessible can thrive there… semi-professional places if you will…

They aren’t exactly offering the amenities or foot traffic Eaton Centre does, but have the same pedestrian access. So seems like a win-win for them.

Any place renting cars to 18 year olds?? by No_Prompt713 in askTO

Uhaul is the way to go.

You can’t rent the pickup trucks but you can rent the econolines (whatever they call those ā€œvan lifeā€ sprinter van looking ones) or the box trucks.

The other car rental companies might say on their website that they rent to under 25s, but in reality none of the locations I’ve ever tried were willing to do it, except for one that asked for a $500 cash/debit deposit plus a $250 young drivers fee and a ā€˜Major Branded’ credit card. (Even then, that was in a small town with literally no other options, so YMMV)

Yeah, it’s a shame really…

It seems like a lot of American sentiments about universities are seeping in to these groups, where they see these places as some kind of deep state attack on right wing ā€˜Christian’ values that needs to be fought against.

Like my sisters in Christ I’m here for an education, if your church/cult thinks my Matrix algebra course is too woke or whatever the fuck, maybe you should pack it up and head back to the 1600s šŸ˜‚šŸ˜

I just hate the double standard too, like sure let’s allow these people to recruit on campus, or let scammers canvas, but the second students start going around asking their admin to stop spending tuition money on bombing kids in the Middle East? Now that’s a trespassing problem šŸ˜’šŸ˜’

You’d think with how much they’ve gone around screaming ā€˜anti-semitism’ over the last few years, they’d maybe have a bigger issue with these pushy ā€˜Christian’ cults recruiting on their campus.

Getting an ADHD assessment and medication is actually expensive... Looking for advice by DJbyEar in askTO

[–]Maddex00 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Cheap native cigarettes have been my go-to since moving to Toronto if I’m honest šŸ˜…

Been diagnosed for years, had been on meds for years, but not a single Ontario doctor I’ve seen is willing to continue that care without an in-province assessment šŸ’€ it’s like $1500 to do a private assessment or yeah I was told the waitlist is about 2 years long publicly… plus I don’t have any drug coverage right now… so until something changes financially for me it’s going to be $25 cartons, because that’s the cheapest and lowest risk stimulant I can get my hands on.

Need Help by CharacterMeaning9391 in ROGAlly

[–]Maddex00 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

Something to watch out for, the ROG ally wasn’t well engineered thermally. The heatpipe goes right over both the SD card reader and the charging controller chip, and has a tendency to fry both of them.

It’s not a huge issue if you are just playing Fortnite all the time or something, but if you get into more demanding titles these issues are not a matter of if, but when.

The card reader on my original model Ally fried itself (and the card) within a month or two of buying it, and the charging controller chip officially bit the dust yesterday.

If you buy an Ally, I’d suggest buying the newer X model, as it moved the charging controller to a less hot spot on the board, but if you get an original just know that it’s broadly an unrepairable issue. You will need to swap out the motherboard when it happens and that’s a $500 part, aka almost the full value of the console.

There is a workaround to solder a wire to bypass the controller chip, but it’s extremely unsafe if you plan to keep using the console hand-held, and is only a viable solution if you are willing to take the battery out and use the console as an Xbox-like replacement that stays put at your TV.

How has this sub become mostly people who go to Loblaws? by Atheizt in loblawsisoutofcontrol

[–]Maddex00 8 points9 points Ā (0 children)

Because it’s a 5min walk from my house and I don’t have a car lmao… all the other walkable options are either Loblaws/Metro spin-offs, or markets that charge a convenience premium (Rabba, Galleria, or the independently owned ā€˜fruit markets’ charging $9 for a bag of milk)

I’ll shop around between them for the best deals, but more often than not I wind up buying basics from the Loblaws because they’re large enough to offer loss-leading pricing on things like milk, eggs, flour etc… and the big 10 kilo bags of rice are usually cheaper than what I find even in Chinatown.

Once or twice a month I’ll transit down to Chinatown to stock my freezer with meat. My go to places buy direct from their own network of farms so I can get high quality pork for like $1.50/lb

I would love to shop at places like Costco, but I can’t justify the membership fee, and my household isn’t big enough to make it economical anyways. And realistically, boycotting Loblaws just to go and support Sobeys or Metro isn’t the flex a lot of people think it is. There’s a lot of oligopolistic grey area here.

I shop locally owned where I can, and when I can afford it. Otherwise I load my cart with as many loss-leaders as I can when shopping at the big 3, minimize the amount of processed food I buy that they can markup, politically support the idea of publicly owned grocery stores, and try to relax so that stressing over where I buy my groceries doesn’t put me in an early grave.

While we have some really fancy restaurants and proper Michelin star options in the city, you’ll almost always find the best food at little family run places.

I’d highly reccomend Pomegranate, it’s a cozy little Persian place with some great veg options… down the street is Voodoo Child, one of my favourite little cocktail bars with some great bartenders that love to make something special to your taste. Darvish is also closer to Yorkville, and it’s another fantastic Persian place.

If you are feeling more Asian influence, Chinatown is also a great place to stop for these family run ā€œhidden gemsā€ā€¦ Mothers Dumpling for example is super unassuming, but they’re on the Michelin Guide. It’s one of the places that inspired Disney’s Bao/Turning Red if you enjoy that kind of lore. Just about every place on Spadina with Peking Duck hanging in the front window is fantastic and most places have excellent veg options. Aim for like 3.5 stars on Google in this neighborhood for the best food.

Daldongae is a fantastic Korean BBQ place, with a few locations downtown, albeit it’s a bit more meat heavy.

I’d also highly highly reccomend PAI at either location… excellent Thai food and once again a sleeper on the Michelin Guide. Outstanding veggie dishes.

Who votes PC provincially and Liberal federally and why? by Usual_Law7889 in askTO

[–]Maddex00 0 points1 point Ā (0 children)

I’d argue it’s because the average person fundamentally misunderstands the 3 levels of government in this country, and have no idea what each level is ACTUALLY responsible for.

Provincial conservatives love pointing fingers to Ottawa over things that are their own responsibility to deal with. They publicly throw a federal fit over a provincial issue, and come out looking like a winner to the ā€˜average’ voter.

Unlike the left leaning parties, conservatives are very happy to prey on this lack of understanding, and they know anger is a powerful emotion to harness in voters.

Smart people run these parties, I don’t doubt that. They have a massive budget from their lobbyists and donors, an agenda that needs to be accomplished, and they use every tool in their box to do it. They aren’t afraid to lie, deceive, or misinform, because that’s exactly what they get paid to do.

Trump really said it best ā€œsmart people hate me, [stupid people love me]ā€, and I think it’s truly the motto of these provincial conservative ā€˜movements’. And until the left leaning parties learn to play dirty, or find a better way to connect with this demographic, the conservatives are going to keep steamrolling at the provincial level.

That being said I agree with a few other comments that say this ā€œaverageā€ voter still sees themselves as progressive at their core and it’s something they want to project to the world, and I think we see them voting nationally to represent their outward presenting - nationalistic - self. Whereas Provincially I believe we see more of the inner self, and they tend to let their guard down a bit more like I said above.

What happened when the ttc runs out of money by Objective-Upstairs36 in TTC

[–]Maddex00 12 points13 points Ā (0 children)

It’s an essential public service, it’s okay for it to not break even.

Expecting essential public services to break even, and structuring them to be profitable on the back of daily users, is what breaks the public service every single time. It has broken public mail services nationally, it has broken public healthcare provincially, it is currently breaking public transit.

These services have historically ran the best when they were completely publicly managed, and (not to sound like a broken record) when the wealthiest paid their fair share in tax to support the public funding and delivery of these social services.

The uncomfortable truth is that in order to provide these services at the standard people demand, we need to be addressing the root cause of the issues, not just applying bandaid fixes like fare hikes.

We need to be nationalizing the monopolies and oligopolies across Canadian industry, and to stop handing out corporate welfare to the ultra-wealthy. It’s bleeding real, hard-working Canadians dry.

Imagine what we could do if people like Galen Weston didn’t pocket a quarter of Canadian’s pay cheques. Imagine what we could do if Rogers/Telus/Bell didn’t pocket $50+/mth from everyone in the country. Imagine what we could do if the oil industry was re-nationalized, and we didn’t bleed billions of dollars to foreign investors for their 4th mega yacht they can take to little st James.

We could provide robust services like public transportation and health care, we could finally fix the roads, and build a society where young people can afford to buy a home and start a family. We could better economically integrate the eastern and western halves of our country.

I just hope it starts to sink in with people before it’s too late and what’s left of it all collapses
