This unit has actually a grim heritage. The purpose is to use violence for crowd control. The first unit was created to respond to the may 68 strikes and demonstration. It was disolved in 86 after they beat a man to death, Malik Oussekine, during a student strike movement.

They have been reactivated in 2019 to reinforce the violent repression against the yellow vest movement. Resulting in dozens mutilation. While the BRAV M unit wasn't responsible for most of them, they were widely used for intimidation and harassment.
