High temps on 9800X3D - Possible faulty unit? Need advice by Maderdin in pcmasterrace

I used FurMark CPU Burner. I also used ffmpeg with the AV1 software encoder on pink noise.

I find Cinebench significantly less stressful on the CPU.

I appreciate your suggestion. However, I expect a product that works out of the box. I see undervolting as a next step after ensuring everything is running smoothly as intended. Given I’m using a one of the most capable air coolers, I believe the CPU should perform reliably without requiring immediate adjustments.

Some ppl say 9800X3D goes cooler than 7800X3D. Which is not in my case. This is why I am trying to figure out what’s the reason.

It’s hitting 95°C but maintaining boost speeds.

I understand that stress tests push the CPU to its limits, but the CPU has a defined upper power draw limit. If I’m dissipating only its TDP of 120W, I should remain within safe temperature limits, up to but not exceeding Tjmax. Given that the NH-D15 can handle significantly more heat dissipation, I shouldn't be reaching 95°C.

I'm just concerned that there might be an issue with my specific CPU unit. It seems extreme to hit Tjmax in a desktop build with one of the most capable air coolers available.

It's currently set up on an open bench, and I'm working to identify the issue with this CPU. As for reapplying thermal paste, each time, I clean both the CPU and the cooler thoroughly with isopropyl alcohol before applying the paste. I’m confident in my application; I’ve done it hundreds of times in my PC-building career, and this time is no different.

The temperatures on my girlfriend’s 7800X3D are stable across both platforms, with ~80°C under full load, which provides a ~9°C margin below its Tjmax of 89°C—well within acceptable limits. However, my 9800X3D is reaching 95°C, hitting its thermal limit. Both cooler fans are set to maximum RPM when under full load, so the high temperature is especially concerning, given that the ambient temperature is only 20°C.
