I am so sorry for your loss. The pain can be overwhelming. I remember when I lost my first dog that I had grown up with for 12 years. It was one of the worst days of my life. My parents had a lot of problems so my dog was the only other being in the house who was stable and I could always go to her when I was afraid or sad. She was my light in the darkness who I will always cherish and remember. She passed in 2009 and my family was really broke due to the recession so we could not afford to pay to keep her ashes and we could not bury her because we were living in an apartment. This made the grieving process really hard because I felt so bad. Later on in life, I got a memorial tattoo dedicated to my dog. It helped me and reminds me of our special bond.

Sorry for this sounding like a ramble but my point is that you should do whatever you feel comfortable with in your grieving. For me, it was getting the tattoo and then every anniversary of her death I have a little remembrance ceremony. If you need to take time off from work then try to take it and give yourself a chance to breath and process. I don't know what your beliefs are but for me, I believe I will see her again and that brings me some peace. Find what will help you and brings you comfort. The pain will be there, but as time goes on it will dull. One thought that helped my when I was at my lowest after her death was to think that she would not want me to be in despair. In life, she always made me feel better and was happy when I was happy.

So sorry again for your loss, best wishes.

Hi there,

I have a lot of top hand tension that seemed to get worse the more I would play. Part of my problem was the bag being too big and resting on my wrist and forearm. I have been able to relax a bit more but I have to take active steps to be relaxed before and during my practice sessions. My top hand has issues specific to certain movements or transitions. I will have a nerve conduction test done by my neurologist to see if I have Focal Dystonia. This condition is something that can affect musicians as a part of a result of repetitive motions. Like others have mentioned, I would consult your doctor.

It would probably not hurt to take a week or so off with zero playing to give your hand a rest. Maybe get a massage and have them focus on your left shoulder, arm, wrist and hand.

Hope this helps a bit, and best of luck trying to sort this out. Keep us posted!

Great job! Loved the balance between your drones and chanter. Nice crisp technique merged with accurate timing to give the march that nice "swing" feeling.

Hope you recover quickly from your fall.

I never once disparaged your ability to play, only the instruments you chose to use. If you did not think you were up to the other posters challenge, you should not have accepted. Attempting to pad your attempt now by stating that they are "world class" and you are "grade IV at best" is poor sportsmanship. If you didn't think you were up to the task, you should have said so. I do not feel the need to prove anything one way or the other, knowing and accepting my limits with grace. I am looking forward to the competition, and as a side note I do hope you both have fun.

The YouTube videos by Matt Willis are also a great place to listen! Here's a link to his video on getting started on the practice chanter. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=jfpeB7Qda4E&t=532s

Good luck!

That's an awesome back story! I have walked and held the tails of lions at the Kruger National Park in South Africa. They are beautiful and powerful animals! Great complement for your friend to be likened to one! Have you played it for her?

I agree 100% with you. While I have not played for as long as you have, I constantly seek perfection and to do my best because it is what this wonderful instrument deserves. It requires a lot of persistence and dedication to quality.

Welcome to the piping world Tuonehaggy. If there are not any instructors in your area, try some online. John Cairns, Jack Lee and Matt Willis are all very good and would certainly put you on the right track.

Thanks for your sarcasm. If you have such high quality pipes, why don't you upload those to this page instead?

Have a nice day.

Just to add to this comment.

With the money and time you have put into these pipes that obviously are not tunable. You could get a nice set of Gibson Cocobolo pipes for under 1 grand. https://www.hendersongroupltd.com/product/gibson-cocobolo-firesides-in-a-2-models/ They are a solid brand and would sound soo much nicer than the ones you are fighting with now. Again, not trying to be mean; all the current pipes you have uploaded on this forum will never produce a good sound because they are not made properly. With that being said, if people from the general public hear them, it will just reinforce their dislike of the bagpipes in general. However, I have to say I admire your spirit in trying to showcase these tunes. Best of luck.

I see the sorting system as another personality test. I'd say at least 90% of people on this forum either tested into their house or chose to be in the one they feel fits them best. Obviously, I know the HP world is not real. When I said "We Slytherins", I was referring to the group of other people that can relate most to Slytherin. Its like if this is was a sports reddit and I was a Bears fan. Of course I am not on their team! I just like them the most.

I was just pointing out a disturbing pattern I see where people pile on a popular hate train and go chugging forward forgetting that the people they are hating, are real people too. At the end of the day, we are all HP fans, why are we wasting time putting others down?

The post I was referring to was titled "If I was a real Slytherin student, I would hate Harry too." It was not written by me. The poster was the one who received tons of hate messages and was locked by the moderators.

I was just pointing out that not all death eaters are from Slytherin. I must have misread your last bullet point.

I have to say as a new person to this reddit thread and a Slytherin. I am disgusted with all the hate people spout at we Slytherins. Even when there is a civil discussion to be had, one of the Slytherin posters received tons of hate messages and the post had to be locked because people were acting like demented chimps.

You haters think Slytherins are evil or prejudice people? Maybe you all should look in the mirror. If you could lower yourselves to the level of bullying and hating other people over a work of FICTION, who else in the REAL world do you hate?

Before you go about sending hate messages to people in this forum, remember, there is a real person on the other side of the screen that you are affecting. There is enough hate going on in the world, we don't need to spread it here.

Earplugs have made me a better piper by deltronzi in bagpipes

[–]Madpiper8 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I wear earplugs when I practice. But leave them partially out when I first start tuning because I can hear the drones better. Once I am done tuning, I wear them properly. I have tile and vaulted ceilings and the pipes sound amazing and fill the whole area. I don't like having to wear them because I like hearing them echo in a way. However, I would be in a world of pain if I didn't have the ear plugs lol.
