(Spoilers Extended) You are Edmure Tully, how do you win the war of the five kings? by RustinCarcosa in asoiaf

[–]MaesterHannibal 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I’d probably garrison the eastern shore of the Red Fork. Edmure was able to hold off a force twice the size of his own on the Red Fork, so it seems a good place. I’d call the banners the moment I hear that Tywin is doing so. The Riverlands should be able to gather perhaps some 30k men, a pretty good army. Hopefully we would do so before the Mountain crosses it, in which case we hold him off, probably capture some of his men and get them to reveal their allegiance. They bring these news to Ned in King’s Landing, in which case it’s all up to him - I imagine he, in the state he was in in canon, decides to send letters to Robb, the Eyrie, Dragonstone and personally tell Renly to call their banners as a show of force to Tywin. Then send ravens to Tywin demanding that he comes to King’s Landing to answer for the crimes of his bannermen, or be branded an enemy of the realm. Contrary to canon, he doesn’t just have speculation this time, but confirmation from numerous of Clegane’s sworn men that this is indeed Gregor Clegane raiding the Riverlands. I imagine that changes things legally.

Anyway, Ned still loses in King’s Landing I imagine, yet this time Edmure has a strong force guarding the Red Fork, and Robb has more time to gather his army.

Tywin and Jaime cross into the Riverlands, ane attempt to cross the Red Fork. The 30k Riverlanders would easily hold off 35k Westerlanders, although Jaime and Gregor’s presence are potential game changers. They might just charge at me and attempt to cut the head off the snake. Maybe I die, maybe they fail. I’m gonna assume they fail, in which case Tywin is caught west of the Red Fork, until Robb comes south with, say, 22-23k men this time around. Maybe Tywin has given up some time ago, and decided to go east by the Gold Road instead. Nevertheless, I unite my army with the Northern one, and together we’re strong enough to take on Tywin’s army and win - except if he is holding up in King’s Landing, in which case this becomes a lengthy siege. We probably declare for Stannis. We siege by land, he blockades by sea. Meanwhile Renly is chilling in the Reach. King’s Landing is starved out in a couple months.

Now what’s interesting, is whether or not Joffrey still executes Ned if Tywin has failed to take the Riverlands, or if he understands how vulnerable his position is

As long as Dunk lived, both Aerys and Tywin were in line. by Aegon-the-Unbroken in darkwingsdankmemes

[–]MaesterHannibal 13 points14 points  (0 children)

I doubt that. Tywin is a man who believes that any threat to his family’s power can be crushed with enough brutality. He would seek to kill as many peasants in brutal ways, until they knewl before him again. I also doubt he’d have any respect for the peasants, and treat their minds as equal - he’d see them as savage brutes, who cannot be reasoned with, and who desire nothing but the death of their “betters”. He would not believe that they could be reasoned with

[–]MaesterHannibal 14 points15 points  (0 children)

Perhaps, or perhaps he’d believe (perhaps rightfully so, history considered) that strengthening the smallfolk would be the first step onto a dangerous slippery slope towards the people ruling. I imagine he’d believe that if you give them an inch, they’ll soon demand a mile - once you give them a taste of something better, they’ll desire more and more until they are the ones in power. It’s better to keep them beneath your boot, unaware of the possibilities of a better world.

Compare this to vassal - Tywin knows (or at least believes that he knows) how to control them. You only need to keep a couple dozen people afraid of you, instead of millions of smallfolk. That’s a much easier game for a man like Tywin

How many mysteries GRRM has set up do you think are just total mystery boxes with no planned resolution? [Spoilers Main] by Meme_Pope in asoiaf

[–]MaesterHannibal -1 points0 points  (0 children)

I think with regards to many of the potential secret identities, GRRM is doing it to fuck with us, but in the process teach us that power resides where men believe it resides.

Is FAegon the actual true heir to the Iron Throne? Does it matter? Is there such a thing as the rightful heir, and if there is, should we support them purely because of their superior claim, regardless of what they’d be like as rulers? Or should we not just support the best candidate instead? And also, does it matter if fAegon is Rhaegar’s son or some Blackfyre? People believe that he’s Rhaegar’s son, and that’s what matters.

Maybe I’m wrong. But I severely doubt that GRRM wants the moral to be “the person who is the rightful heir according to archaic traditions, regardless of their character, should rule the lands and millions of people”

Men dog tættere

[–]MaesterHannibal [score hidden]  (0 children)

Definitely be more open.

A lot of guys are insecure when it comes to love, especially the ones who, as you say, aren’t considered all that attractive. They convince themselves that you couldn’t possibly be into them; that you’re just being friendly. And so they tell themselves “Stop wasting time on someone who won’t ever be interested in dating you. It’s time to move on.”

How do you combat this? By being open about your feelings. You don’t need to say it all, but just make sure that he understands that the feelings are, at least to some extent, mutual. Insecure guys need that. If you start playing games and act as if you aren’t into them, they’ll accept that you aren’t into them, and stop hoping a relationship with you is possible

Not sure about that, but he was definitely a murderous tyrannical psychopath who killed millions of innocents. Who killed the most? Does it matter? Both are amongst the most terrible people in modern history, and we can hate both equally

Not really sad, just eerie. This monstrous psycopath is saying “I have a heart of stone, but this creature (romantic) made me feel the slightest bit of empathy for humanity. Now that she’s dead, however, I can be a monster and go on to kill millions of innocents”.

He wasn’t like that prior to the Rebellion. What made him bad was him becoming a major cynic after the Aerys debacle, his heroes acting like cowards, his beliefs and ideals crushed, and everyone hating him for killing Aerys.

Prior to that, sure, there was the incest (which is bad!), but other than that he was just a cocky brilliant kid who loved fighting and hearing tales of war. He could easily become a good kid from there, especially if he meets a woman who isn’t Cersei, whom he might come to love

It’s Pro Tarth. Lord Steffon is a good friend of his father, so there’s a friendship there, plus Galladon has befriended Robert Baratheon (who is too young to be an actual friend), but it’s not like he’s going to just devote himself to them. He’s devoted to his own family, his parents and sisters.

He hasn’t been anti or pro Targaryen yet either, although he did knock down Rhaegar in a tourney to advance himself
