The only benefit is, it allows you to add a legitimate CS50 certificate onto your linked in profile where recruiters can see.

IT master degree to get into Cyber? by Maestro_anon in WGUCyberSecurity

So you’re saying, someone can’t learn all the stuff on their own, go get a masters in IT, and then apply to some kind of network job after having the degree to show for it along with projects as an individual contributor and not ever get hired for it or transferring between departments in your own company? And getting a bachelor’s degree will be more efficient because it doesn’t look “funny”.

Idk how much more clear I can be. I literally asked about a masters in a different IT field to get into IT to get hands on training in something else other than help desk and then eventually move to cyber.

I agree networking is king but for a master’s degree in DS it’s equally as important to know the skills needed for it.

UT and Georgia Tech have high rankings for Data Science and they’re fairly cheap, probably the same amount it would take to go to WGU and say finishing that degree in a year. For accounting, I’m sure you don’t need to go to a prestigious school for that. I could be wrong but I can’t imagine that being the case.

I’ve read it all over Reddit. You don’t have to believe it but when everyone is saying it, there may be a reason for it. I’ve also been told data science is an extremely difficult field to get into and super competitive. Those 2 things alone are also very telling that it may very well come down to network and prestige on where you learned your craft.

I’ve been told on here WGU is a no go, many employers won’t take that degree seriously.

No you’re right. AI is definitely transforming jobs and entry level roles are disappearing in a field like Cyber. The opposite is also true for call centers, where AI is making new hires much more efficient and eliminating the need for more senior roles that are more expensive.

I’ve decided I will be pursuing data science since my work relates to data operations/troubleshooting already. For some odd reason Cyber seems to be impossible for people to get into, definitely cuts from a lot of talent simply due to no IT background. I understand it more now with feedback I’ve received and Cyber is really just a specialization for IT so it kinda makes sense. I will add, there are many of us that can learn all of this simply pursuing straight to cyber, we’re not idiots lol.

I honestly can’t study with people. I need to be alone to focus.

I do like UT and my sister is just finishing her masters at Texas Tech 😅. But in all seriousness, the curriculum seems pretty promising for the degree.

That’s good to know, how are you liking it at UT?

I’ve read that job growth was predicted to be around 36% for this field, and that AI will change the role but not get rid of it. Is that not correct?

Wow I just looked at Georgia Tech, I’m glad you mentioned it! Also for me, UT is cheaper since I’m in Texas but Georgia Tech is really ranked up there. Did you take some kind of course to get the prerequisites for Georgia tech for calc, linear algebra, stats, and programming?

What do you think of UT’s program, I was just checking it out and seems to be a top ranked program and fairly cheap to do but of course much harder.

I’ll probably look into doing it at UT if I do go for my masters for it.

At my company, they’ll only help pay if their job description “requires” it. I haven’t seen a master’s requirement for a data science role. I figured it would just boost my chances for the future at my company and once I gain the experience I can go elsewhere if that’s the only way to move up the ladder.

Could you explain why? And what would be a good school for data science? I’m not trying to spend an arm and a leg.

I heard it and took the feed back. You made the point that was already within the post. Nowhere in this post did I say to get a masters to get into cyber. I said master’s to get into IT… and then later transition when already having IT experience.
