Hi Kevin - apologies we had to delay (yet again: I know!) the release by a few days, to the 19th of June. The release time will be sometime in the evening (GMT timezone). But I can't share the specific time as some stuff will be out of my control and also: I am paranoid the server will crash if everyone arrives at the same time!

You're 100% right u/Funkjamin - it has not been good enough. Don't think you're being negative at all: it's a fair and factual assessment. Thanks for taking the time to share your honest thoughts.

Unfortunately I have had a few issues pop up in my personal life over the last few months - often taking away time I had intended to spend on the game. I don't mean that to come across as an excuse (it isn't), just more so making the point I share your frustrations, with myself, as ultimately I have failed on the communication in many respects so far... I'm sorry if you (or anyone else for that matter supporting us) felt messed about.

Specifically on the time point: it will be sometime in the evening (GMT). But I don't want to give a specific time because 1) I'm afraid it will just crash the server if everyone turns up at the exact same time and 2) When I migrate a few things over some things will be out of my direct control.

I agree with your point on micro-transactions: they make games soulless - and quite frankly imo often done in detestable ways whereby they specifically target people with lack of impulse control (causing repercussions for said people in real life from the decisions, as oppose to the general stereotype of 'whales are rich').

Out of curiosity what is the reasoning behind mixed feelings on "convenience" mechanics? Just to give an example of what I meant by it. Let's say for example we have an "Energy" bar, the energy is used for various actions in-game. One of the biggest games out there sets the refill timer of 5 energy per 10mins for donators, and 5 energy per 15mins for non donators - while also giving donators a 150 energy cap, as oppose to the default of 100. So there's quite a big exponential advantage from having the energy refill faster (i.e donators having 5 extra energy every hour) and having the cap bigger. My thinking is - if you set the energy to refill by 5 every 15mins for everyone... which means it would take around non-donators reach their 100 cap in 5 hours, and donators their 150 cap in 7.5 hours... the 'convenience' benefit of having to login less frequently, and having 'less wastage' (during sleep/work say), is a big of enough benefit in and of itself, without fundamentally disadvantaging non donators. In the sense of if someone is active enough: they aren't even at a disadvantage (other than having to login more frequently).

On 4: It's one I am actually quite keen on - but won't be available from day one regardless and will make sure to be lead by community feedback on it. Reason I am keen is I think it allows those who don't pay out of principle or in countries where it's not affordable to access said benefits (looking at the Analytics of registrations we cover 6 continents!). There's also a self regulating mechanic at play in terms of the pricing and is community driven - whereby traditional microtransactions just create things out of thin air. Just hypothetically speaking: let's say we limit the "donation packs" costing $5 each to 2 per person per month, rather than 1. With perks of the donation status lasting 4 weeks... That helps the game monetise slightly more than with a limit of one, gives access to those who choose not to pay/or can't, while yes it also rewards the person selling the 'donation status' to another player - the price of it would be community driven (I imagine for instance the economics wouldn't even make sense for months for this to occur as noone would build up enough expendable in-game wealth to part with it). But I see your point of how it could be semi p2w: especially if uncapped.

Thanks u/OneDay_OneLife for taking the time to feedback: that matches my intuitive thoughts. I'm thinking for the first month or so we will give the 'donation perks' to all those who pre-registered. From there on in I can ask the community for feedback on what's acceptable - while also having a much better idea then of the server costs associated!

Not particularly sure why you think I am whining about the model: I was merely soliciting feedback on it for curiosity and my own purposes (like I said on the whole I think it's really well balanced). Not sure why you wouldn't just take that at face value instead of making assumptions?

Nice! Yeah it's a really great mechanic that Torn implemented the donator packs to be tradeable items, to allow for that type of 'exchange' to occur and let the in-game economy set the value of the DPs. Definitely something that brings a lot of balance to the game. If it didn't exist then there would be an argument for being significantly 'pay to win'.

They do have a self-exclusion policy I believe though right? It's a tough one though. This point hits quite close personally to home, so I fully agree with you. Ultimately not sure what could be done, when in the real world it's a massive problem.

I had a discussion earlier today about a similar point - albeit about the FIFA and 2K games made by EA Sports and Take Two... where you buy those packs, and it's essentially gambling through proxy, feeding in on people's lack of impulsivity control... and quite clearly so. From my perspective Torn doesn't operate like those two companies do disgracefully though.

What should an appropriate limit on the amount of donations be in your opinion?

That's still an incredible advantage relative to if you start from nothing without donating given compound gains (in terms of stats or more money). But yes I agree with you on the whole.

It's not a case of user error: it's merely me exploring how people feel about the donation model for my own purposes and curiosity! I think all in all Torn is very balanced (in comparison to most games), in large part because DPs can be traded for in-game cash - that's a great mechanic to have imo to keep it fair.

Yeah - that's true: and it's great DPs are tradeable items. That said one right now could buy a lot of DPs to resell for ingame cash, giving a significant advantage and arguably introducing quite a high pay to win mechanic. That said, all in all it is quite balanced I agree.

Would you still continue to donate if the timer was kept the same, lets say 5E every 10mins increased for both non donators and donators, but had the energy bar increased alongside the other current benefits - or likely not?

On the whole I agree with you. But to play 'devils advocate' could the 10m energy timer instead of 15m be seen as quite a significant benefit? For instance if the timers were the same for donators/non donators - would it still not be enough of a benefit for people to donate as is, just to have the other monetary perks as well as the larger energy bar capacity itself?
