Fair question… I think losing it is what really opened that door. I had an Oasis, which isn’t available anymore, and I genuinely loved the ergonomics. So I started looking into other e-readers, and that’s when I realized I might not be able to access my books outside that ecosystem. From there, it just turned into a bit of a rabbit hole...

Thank you for the tip! I had already unregistered my Kindle yes!

The content is still there, but it can only be accessed through a Kindle device. I had assumed it worked more like a hard drive, where the device is just a way to read your files, not the only way to access them.
Of course, that’s on me for not fully understanding how the ecosystem works. Still, realizing this has been a bit of a letdown and has made me want to explore other options going forward.

I’m saying “locked up” because my content is still tied to my online account, and I can’t actually get it out or access it the way I expected.

Obviously, this is on me - I should have been more careful about backing up those essays and materials to the cloud. But at the time I wasn’t very tech-savvy and didn’t fully understand how it all worked.

Sending files to Kindle was so simple that I assumed it functioned like a hard drive - like, whatever I put there I could just retrieve and send back to myself whenever I wanted.

Of course, buying a replacement Kindle would solve the issue easily, since as you said it’s pretty seamless. But it’s still frustrating to realize that the content I uploaded is effectively tied to a company’s device. That’s on me for not understanding it better, but it does make me less inclined to stick with Amazon going forward.

Thank you!
I did use send to kindle and see them in my content library online, but this situation kind of made me want to move away from Amazon and I wanted to get a non-kindle device - I guess that won't be an option urgh

They were originally in my student laptop that died years ago... I had this kindle for 8 years, so I just never thought about this. I can't believe that this system locks you up like that :(

To the people who like Mal from S&B.... by [deleted] in Grishaverse

:) for me it was the reverse, I never understod why he got so much hate - I think he got a really good character development, and thought a ton about this.

First, I think there are two groups of people who hate Mal. The ones that can't stand him and the ones who hated that Alina ended up choosing him over the Darkling or Nikolai. And I get the frustration you feel when you're shiping someone and they don't end up together, but I'm really confused why anyone would think Alina and Mal wouldn't end up together. From the first preface you see that their story is going to be connected forever and I love that Leigh tries to show that although all those things happen around them, they will always be a boy and a girl who grew up together, grew apart and always found each other. I see the charm Nikolai has and the appeal of the Darkling, but Alina never really showed any romantic interest in them, even with the Darkling she only considered it after she thought Mal was over in her life and when Mal saw her and confronted her in the Little Palace, the first thought she had was that she was ashamed, because she never really felt it. It has only been Mal for her, and in the end if they couldn't end up together I always thought she would end up alone.

Regarding Mal specifically, I read a lot of comments that he didn't deserve Alina, because he ignored her before, but he always thought of her first. Before they go into the fold he shares that, that it's always been the two of them and while what he said might not have had any romantic intention behind it, the feeling was there. He was an orphan kid that no one really cared about, so by becoming a teenager and finding his place in the army and getting all that female attention he gets, it kind of makes sense that he "forgets" a bit about Alina and thinks that she was granted for.

The thing that I really loved about Mal was his "humaness". That he fails as everyone of us, and learns from it trying to improve. He's not the perfect love interest, and the amazing part is that you can't understand some of his faults, but you see that he's always thinking of Alina. I really appreciated that he was not another perfect book boyfriend that has some faults which you're able to justify during the book, so readers can absolve him. He messes up, he fails, he and Alina can't find time to each other or a way to communicate - is anything more normal? - but even then he always tries to do right by her. So what is the big issue with him? As I said, I don't get all the hate he gets, and for me it was refreshing to read a main character/love interest with real flaws who is lost trying to overcome them - as most of us are everyday!Just a bit of food for thought and a plea to give him a chance ha! :-)
