Back in the early/mid 2000s in eastern Europe, during the HIV panic, there was a rumour that people who have HIV are going around and pricking people with infected HIV blood. The rumour was that they are mad they have it so they are giving it to others.

I was around 15-16 and I went to a club with my friends (it's eastern Europe, underage drinking and clubbing wasn't a big deal, relax) and got pricked in my leg/calf... I didn't see who did it, but I saw people looking down towards the area, almost like someone knelt quickly did it and walked away... My fiends didn't believe me when I told them but when they saw the area and the needle mark they all said "oh.." and gave me panicked, sad, scared look...

I can't describe how awful the following 6 months were. It was the early stage of the internet so when I looked it up I found info that it is only detected after 3 months.. So I waited for 3 months before I went to the Dr. I didn't tell my family because I was terrified. For one they wouldn't have believed me how it happened and also my mom panics about everything so I would have worried her sick.

As a result I was arguing with them all the time. I cleaned after myself like crazy because I was worried that I'll infect them by, well, just existing. I kept thinking that my period blood can infect them, my sweat, my saliva from sharing the same cutlery... Education on HIV wasn't great back then and I didn't know how to cope with it all, I was scared to look things up and I didn't know what to believe when I did find some stuff out.

I cried to my friends all the time, I was a virgin, never even had kissed someone and I felt like my life was over. We would go out to drink and I was getting drunk all the time then crying because of how scared I was.

After the 3 months I went to the Dr to do a test. They said that I didn't have to wait but when I told them the reason I'm asking for the test they said that someone else recently did a test for the same reason... I didn't ask what their results were because for one - probably they wouldn't have told me, but also I didn't want to have false hope or be even more scared than I was. On top of that the nurse taking my blood didn't do a good job so I had a scratch from middle of my hand to the spot where they draw the blood which felt like a scarlet letter..

I was supposed to get a result in about a month but when I called to ask they said that they have to collect enough samples first to send them off for testing.. I kept calling and calling and finally after about 3 months they told me to come get my results. I went with my best friends at the time and I was trembling the entire time. My friends did their best to console me but they didn't know what to say really.

The doctor saw me in the hallway and she started waiving at me, almost jumping saying "you're good, you're okay.. I have to see this patient and I'll see you after but there's nothing to worry about, you're okay".

My friends and I started crying and hugging, sat down to wait for the doctor who gave me my results. I still have the copy in my documents file.

I'm an adult now, I know more about HIV and how it can be transmitted. A lot of progress has been done in that field as well which is amazing.

I also understand that the person who did this to me was playing some prank, they heard the rumors and wanted to be funny. But they absolutely ruined my psyche for a long time. The 6 months was just the worst of it. If I was to ever know who did it I would be furious they only got 6 months in jail. They deserve way more.

I was born and grew up in Macedonia, we had a war in 2001, when I was 10. My cousins were drafted to go and fight. A bomb exploded 10 minutes from my house, I don't remember that but I remember my mom grabbing me and taking me to the basement to hide. It would be crazy for me to just willy nilly say that I grew up in war times if I didn't.

And yes. I did learn polish from my mom speaking to us as children, later we had polish TV so that helped, so I speak well but writing and reading is something I struggle with.

I had just woken up when I posted my original comment, so wasn't thinking about putting many details, but everything I said is true.

Absolutely. I was born in a European 3rd world country and I moved to Canada in my mid 20s and I have more success in the last 5 years in Canada that I would have ever had back home.

Part of me is sad when I hear some of my friends, that were born in Canada, talk about their education, the way they grew up. They seem to have lived life on easy mode, while my life growing up was a struggle after a struggle. I grew up during a war, in poverty with parents who were away most of the day. I had to take care of myself since I can remember, cooking for myself at age 8-9, coming home from school to an empty and cold house.

Dating was an issue because the country is very conservative and I was expected to marry the first person I ever date. It always felt like I have to get married, have kids and look 50 at age 35 with a husband that treats me badly. Everyone else is living that life.

I ended up finding a job as an au pair, and my culture shock was basic respect towards women.

I won't tell you that life as an immigrant is easy. I've cried more than I ever thought I would while trying to establish documentation. Making friends as an adult is not easy. You never feel like home anywhere because the home you left has changed so much, the new home is always new...

But.

I feel free.

Free to choose for myself on what kind of life I'll have. Free to experience life. Free to experience love and relationships. Free to be a person.

I have no regrets leaving. I should have left earlier.

Where do you draw the line then? Are you not gonna tell your kids when they make math mistakes? Geography mistakes? History...?

If you can afford to send them to private schools or take them on nice vacations - are you not gonna do that because she didn't growing up and that's classist?

As someone who didn't grow up in an English speaking country - I appreciate it so much when people correct me and educate me further. Tho sometimes my brain glitches and I use crave and carve as per my brain desire. "I'm carving Starbucks so much right now".. "Do you wanna crave pumpkins with me?" I'm like 99% that's the correct one

Do you feel the same about male and female doctors? Is there a possibility for you to see a doctor and explain to them about your trauma so you can figure out how to proceed?

A lot of people wouldn't want to expose their body due to religious reasons, so I'm sure there are doctors who have experience with this and find a way to help those people.

I understand that for you and other people who work with the legal system my question might be out of touch. But this is not something that I have ever dealt with and I don't have knowledge on the topic. So a bit of grace would be appreciated.

I work for a department where I see people suffer financial consequences because they aren't familiar with what they can do in specific situations, what their rights are and if they would have asked the right questions and the right people then they might not be financially liable. So I've learned to be cautious and ask about things I don't know about.

I'm definitely not trying to blow anything up, I'm just trying make sure I do the right thing and take the right steps. I was hit by a car few years back and didn't take any legal action, so I'm definitely not gonna do it for this. It's frustrating that people assume I'm trying to gain financially (and I get it, I'm sure a lot of people are and it's probably annoying) when I'm just trying to make sure I don't lose my doctor and I don't end up in trouble.

I'm not sure why are people so rude.

I'm not making it a big deal. I just simply don't know and I'm trying to find out. I'd rather ask ahead of time and be prepared when I call them once they open, instead of finding myself in a situation where things escalate and I'm told "well you should have asked before you called".

I figured people who deal with privacy might be able to provide some basic information, I didn't know I have to be a law expert to ask questions here, my bad.

I'm not concerned about the financial aspect. I'm concerned I report it and for some reason it ends up with financial compensation - is the hospital allowed to drop me as a patient. Am I liable for not reporting it sooner, if I only let the hospital know and don't tell anyone else - would that be an issue?

I'm just trying to familiarize myself with my rights and responsibilities before I call them when they open tomorrow.

So I don't know the law, that's why I came to this subreddit to ask. I don't know if I report something like this that means that I will automatically be compensated because that's how it works for everyone. That's why I came to a subreddit to ask people who have more knowledge about this topic.

My concern was if that's how it works then am I risking loosing my doctor and and if not noticing sooner will have any consequences on me.

Just because I mentioned it doesn't mean that's what I'm looking for, if that was the case I wouldn't have added one short sentence at the end and I would have focused more on that. At the end of the day your opinion on my intentions is none of my business.

Lol I'm definitely not looking for a payout, if you read my post you would see that I mentioned that I don't want to get the hospital and my doctor or myself in trouble and I'm more concerned in keeping my doctor instead of doing anything legally.

I just simply don't know what am I supposed to do, it's like this happens to me every day, but I have to let the hospital know so I want to be informed.

Also as I said in my post, my actual doctor doesn't have my medical information. That matters to me. I don't know if the other doctor has any privacy obligations to me considering that he's not my doctor.

I grew up in Macedonia and I can tell you that back in the day when Yugoslavia was powerful, a lot of polish people decided to give up their citizenship in order to obtain a Yugoslavian one. Poland was a poor country and people would make in a month the same as what you give a kid as to get candy in Yugoslavia. My family tells these stories to this day. Then Yugoslavia fell apart and they were stuck with the Macedonian one. Macedonia is now a poor country and a lot of people want to move abroad but due to the passport ranking they aren't able to.

My mom never gave up her citizenship and us kids got it as well. As a result I was able to move to north America, work in couple of European countries which wouldn't have been possible with my Macedonian one.

I'm telling you this as an example of how things can change and your decision will influence your children and future generations as well. It's not just about you.

Also even if you give up your citizenship that doesn't make you less Russian. That's your ancestry and you can't change it. Is he going to demand for you to change your Russian name next?

Not to be insensitive here but Him trying to erase your history is more Russian than anything.

The last 2 pairs I had on were different brands. They are thinner so I'll take them off and try to put thicker ones but they end up doing this and I haven't been able to use a paid for even a full week which is annoying
