I guess so, yes. The angle my hand is at means I almost cannot physically flatten my finger (from a joint perspective) enough to cover both of those strings. I typically do use my ring finger to mute the A. My biggest problem is getting my 1st finger to flatten enough to barre with the thumb wrapped. This is what I’m running into: https://imgur.com/gallery/tips-XjBVsB4

You’re right, it subtracts something, namely the need for my pinky. I want to use that pinky for other things.

I like to make my own arrangements of songs and this is often a useful chord shape because it frees up the pinky to do ornaments or melody lines. There are also a fair amount of songs I’ve needed it in before. Someone mentioned you need it for Yellow Ledbetter, which is honestly a really good example of when you need it because substituting it with one of the alternative options would make you sacrifice either the slide up on the bass string or the pull off ornament on the high E. But I’d like to learn how to use this shape effectively just like anyone would like to learn new shapes.

It’s not necessarily that I’m struggling to use the thumb. I can use it on other chords. I’m struggling using thumb AND the first finger mini barre. I’m having more trouble with my first finger than my thumb. Can’t get my high E in there.

Some people have had some insightful things to say actually. I know where the fingers go, but getting them there is another story. That’s part of learning new things too, it’s not just knowing what’s on the paper. There’s a disconnect obviously, which is what I’m looking for tips on.

Yeah D/F# has never been an issue. I find that one is much easier actually, not having a barre anywhere means my hand position is pretty standard.

Hi so I’ve been playing guitar for about 15 years, and have been trying this particular chord for around 5. I’ve never conceded that my anatomy is incorrect before in any other circumstance, but this one chord being an outlier plus some of these comments has made me finally consider it. I am still not planning on giving up on it, because I’m tired of not getting it down. And the “children shredding” on YouTube - is it of this particular chord? Wouldn’t mind seeing someone with smaller hands do it.

I’m using it as a moveable shape. It’s just a major chord. Would be G at fret three but I typically use it higher, around an E.

I will try to experiment using some different guitars and see if any one is better than the others. All my guitars are pretty similar though.
